Task-Irrelevant Perceptual Learning Specific to the Contrast Polarity of Motion Stimuli
Studies of perceptual learning have focused on aspects of learning that are related to early stages of sensory processing. However, conclusions that perceptual learning results in low-level sensory plasticity are of great controversy, largely because such learning can often be attributed to plasticity in later stages of sensory processing or in the decision processes. To address this controversy, we developed a novel random dot motion (RDM) stimulus to target motion cells selective to contrast polarity, by ensuring the motion direction information arises only from signal dot onsets and not their offsets, and used these stimuli in conjunction with the paradigm of task-irrelevant perceptual learning (TIPL). In TIPL, learning is achieved in response to a stimulus by subliminally pairing that stimulus with the targets of an unrelated training task. In this manner, we are able to probe learning for an aspect of motion processing thought to be a function of directional V1 simple cells with a learning procedure that dissociates the learned stimulus from the decision processes relevant to the training task. Our results show learning for the exposed contrast polarity and that this learning does not transfer to the unexposed contrast polarity. These results suggest that TIPL for motion stimuli may occur at the stage of directional V1 simple cells.CELEST, an NSF Science of Learning Center (SBE-0354378); Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency SyNAPSE program (HR0011-09-3-0001, HR001-09-C-0011); National Science Foundation (BCS-0549036); National Institutes of Health (R21 EY017737
Tamsulosin turn a round
Tamsulosin is a sulfamoylphen-ethylamine derivative, a potent and a selective antagonist of Alpha-1A adrenoceptor. Its approved in the treatment of LUTS in BPH disease, being a specific Alpha -1A blocker it does not interfere much with the cardiovascular system. Though an age old molecule but still its a friendly drug to most of the physicians. Even the recent studies found its as efficacious to some of the newer molecules in the group
Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Mn doped Benzimidazole Thin Films
In the present work, the Mn doped benzimidazole (BMZ) thin films were
prepared by simple chemical bath deposition technique. The material was
directly deposited as thin film on glass substrates and the metal concentration
in the solution was varied in weight percentage in order to investigate the
dopant effect on the properties of thin films. Similarly, the Mn doped BMZ
films were deposited in different solution temperature to study the effect of
deposition temperature on the properties of thin films. The PXRD and FT-IR
spectroscopy are used to study the structural and the presence of functional
groups in the BMZ medium. Depending upon the solution temperature, thickness of
the films varying from 0.6 to 1.2 {\mu}m and the optical transparency of the
samples increases with the increasing temperature up to 50 {\deg}C. Second
Harmonic Generation (SHG) efficiency of the films is measured for all the
films. Third order nonlinear optical properties of the films were analyzed
using Z-scan technique. The experimental results show that Mn doped BMZ films
exhibits saturation absorption and negative nonlinearity.Comment: This has been presented in DAE 58th Solid State Symposium held at

Long term Ultra-Violet Variability of Seyfert galaxies
Flux variability is one of the defining characteristics of Seyfert galaxies,
a class of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Though these variations are observed
over a wide range of wavelengths, results on their flux variability
characteristics in the ultra-violet (UV) band are very limited. We present here
the long term UV flux variability characteristics of a sample of fourteen
Seyfert galaxies using data from the International Ultraviolet Explorer
acquired between 1978 and 1995. We found that all the sources showed flux
variations with no statistically significant difference in the amplitude of UV
flux variation between shorter and longer wavelengths. Also, the flux
variations between different near-UV (NUV, 1850 - 3300 A) and far-UV (FUV, 1150
- 2000 A) passbands in the rest frames of the objects are correlated with no
time lag. The data show indications of (i) a mild negative correlation of UV
variability with bolometric luminosity and (ii) weak positive correlation
between UV variability and black hole mass. At FUV, about 50% of the sources
show a strong correlation between spectral indices and flux variations with a
hardening when brightening behaviour, while for the remaining sources the
correlation is moderate. In NUV, the sources do show a harder when brighter
trend, however, the correlation is either weak or moderate.Comment: Accepted by Journal of Astrophysics and Astronom
Evaluation of efficacy and safety profile of tamsulosin in benign prostatic hyperplasia
Background: To evaluate the efficacy and safety profile of alpha-1A receptor subtype specific antagonist-tamsulosin in benign prostatic hyperplasia. Methods: An open label, non-randomised, prospective, single centred study who were visiting urology department with confirmed diagnosis of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) were included in the study. Thirty patients with BPH were prescribed tamsulosin and were followed up to three months. The initial or baseline data collected were identification of the patients such as international prostate symptom score (IPSS), prostate specific antigen, urine analysis, and ultrasonography of prostate including post void residual urine. The patients were followed up to 3 months to measure clinical and laboratory outcomes (IPSS score, post void residual urine, uroflow rates etc.).Results: In our study, patients receiving tamsulosin 0.4 mg once daily showed a significant improvement in post-void residual urine (PVRU), uroflow rates and IPSS score. The improvements in the above parameters were found to be statistically insignificant at first and third month of follow-up.Conclusions: In our study, tamsulosin an alpha-1A receptor subtype specific antagonist showed significant improvement in BPH symptoms and the drug was well tolerated
