    Canonical Generations and the British Left: The Narrative Construction of the Miners’ Strike 1984–85

    ‘Generations’ have been invoked to describe a variety of social and cultural relationships, and to understand the development of self-conscious group identity. Equally, the term can be an applied label and politically useful construct; generations can be retrospectively produced. Drawing on the concept of ‘canonical generations’ – those whose experiences come to epitomise an event of historic and symbolic importance – this article examines the narrative creation and functions of ‘generations’ as collective memory shapes and re-shapes the desire for social change. Building a case study of the canonical role of the miners’ strike of 1984–85 in the narrative history of the British left, it examines the selective appropriation and transmission of the past in the development of political consciousness. It foregrounds the autobiographical narratives of activists who, in examining and legitimising their own actions and prospects, (re)produce a ‘generation’ in order to create a relatable and useful historical understanding

    The Hidden Curriculum of a Teacher Induction Program: Ontario Teacher Educators’ Perspectives

    This article investigates the hidden curriculum of Ontario’s New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP). The study involved interviews with 47 teacher educators from eight faculties of education. Responses revealed concerns about (a) who chooses the men‐ tors, (b) the probationary status of new teachers, and (c) the evaluation of new teach‐ ers’ competence. In the opinion of some teacher educators, the structure of NTIP may discourage new teachers from critiquing the system that employs them thus decreas‐ ing the likelihood of their taking a critical democratic stance in their teaching. These findings have implications for any induction or mentorship program for new teach‐ ers.     Renormalisation of the scalar energy-momentum tensor with the Wilson flow

    Talk presented at the 34th International Symposium on Lattice Field Theory (Lattice 2016) by Susanne EhretThe non-perturbative computation of the energy-momentum tensor can be used to study the scaling behaviour of strongly coupled quantum field theories. The Wilson flow is an essential tool to find a meaningful formulation of the energy-momentum tensor on the lattice. We extend recent studies of the renormalisation of the energy-momentum tensor in four-dimensional gauge theory to the case of a three-dimensional scalar theory to investigate its intrinsic structure and numerical feasibility on a more basic level. In this paper, we discuss translation Ward identities, introduce the Wilson flow for scalar theory, and present our results for the renormalisation constants of the scalar energy-momentum tensor

The 296 participants (19\u201329 years; 50.7% males) rated items of information on a questionnaire, regarding their perspective of their attachment to their mother/father and attitude toward love. Using a variable-centred approach and a person-centred approach, the results suggest that the respondents differed in levels of parental attachment or love styles and that the present parental attachment has a positive impact on their romantic relationship. It is possible to estimate romantic relationships and prevent manic relationships based on the individual\u2019s current perceptions of their attachment to the father or mother. The role of parents and paternal attachment, are still fundamental in Italian young adults. The role of communication with the mother, in particular, is controversial and should be further investigated

    Statistics of extremal intensities for Gaussian interfaces

    The extremal Fourier intensities are studied for stationary Edwards-Wilkinson-type, Gaussian, interfaces with power-law dispersion. We calculate the probability distribution of the maximal intensity and find that, generically, it does not coincide with the distribution of the integrated power spectrum (i.e. roughness of the surface), nor does it obey any of the known extreme statistics limit distributions. The Fisher-Tippett-Gumbel limit distribution is, however, recovered in three cases: (i) in the non-dispersive (white noise) limit, (ii) for high dimensions, and (iii) when only short-wavelength modes are kept.     Relevance of soft modes for order parameter fluctuations in the Two-Dimensional XY model

    We analyse the spin wave approximation for the 2D-XY model, directly in reciprocal space. In this limit the model is diagonal and the normal modes are statistically independent. Despite this simplicity non-trivial critical properties are observed and exploited. We confirm that the observed asymmetry for the probability density function for order parameter fluctuations comes from the divergence of the mode amplitudes across the Brillouin zone. We show that the asymmetry is a many body effect despite the importance played by the zone centre. The precise form of the function is dependent on the details of the Gibbs measure, giving weight to the idea that an effective Gibbs measure should exist in non-equilibrium systems, if a similar distribution is observed.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figure

    Domain wall QCD with physical quark masses

    We present results for several light hadronic quantities (fπf_\pi, fKf_K, BKB_K, mudm_{ud}, msm_s, t01/2t_0^{1/2}, w0w_0) obtained from simulations of 2+1 flavor domain wall lattice QCD with large physical volumes and nearly-physical pion masses at two lattice spacings. We perform a short, O(3)%, extrapolation in pion mass to the physical values by combining our new data in a simultaneous chiral/continuum `global fit' with a number of other ensembles with heavier pion masses. We use the physical values of mπm_\pi, mKm_K and mΩm_\Omega to determine the two quark masses and the scale - all other quantities are outputs from our simulations. We obtain results with sub-percent statistical errors and negligible chiral and finite-volume systematics for these light hadronic quantities, including: fπf_\pi = 130.2(9) MeV; fKf_K = 155.5(8) MeV; the average up/down quark mass and strange quark mass in the MSˉ\bar {\rm MS} scheme at 3 GeV, 2.997(49) and 81.64(1.17) MeV respectively; and the neutral kaon mixing parameter, BKB_K, in the RGI scheme, 0.750(15) and the MSˉ\bar{\rm MS} scheme at 3 GeV, 0.530(11).Comment: 131 pages, 30 figures.     Hydrochlorothiazide Use and Risk of Nonmelanoma Skin Cancers: A Biological Plausibility Study

    Recent studies reported the association between increased risk of nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) and the use of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), one of the most commonly prescribed diuretic, antihypertensive drug, over the world. Although HCTZ is known to be photosensitizing, the mechanisms involved in its potential prophotocarcinogenic effects remain unclear. Under acute exposure, therapeutically relevant concentrations of HCTZ (70, 140, and 370 ng/mL) amplified UVA-induced double-strand breaks, oxidative DNA, and protein damage in HaCaT human keratinocytes, and this effect was associated to a defective activity of the DNA repair enzyme, OGG1. Oxidative damage to DNA, but not that to proteins, was reversible within few hours. After chronic, combined exposure to HCTZ (70 ng/mL) and UVA (10 J/cm(2)), for 9 weeks, keratinocytes acquired a dysplastic-like phenotype characterized by a multilayered morphology and alterations in cell size, shape, and contacts. At the ultrastructural level, several atypical and enlarged nuclei and evident nucleoli were also observed. These transformed keratinocytes were apoptosis resistant, exhibited enhanced clonogenicity capacity, increased DNA damage and inflammation, defective DNA repair ability, and increased expression of the oncogene ΔNp63α and intranuclear ÎČ-catenin accumulation (a hallmark of Wnt pathway activation), compared to those treated with UVA alone. None of these molecular, morphological, or functional effects were observed in cells treated with HCTZ alone. All these features resemble in part those of preneoplastic lesions and NMSCs and provide evidence of a biological plausibility for the association among exposure to UVA, use of HCTZ, and increased risk of NMSCs. These results are of translational relevance since we used environmentally relevant UVA doses and tested HCTZ at concentrations that reflect the plasma levels of doses used in clinical practice. This study also highlights that drug safety data should be followed by experimental evaluations to clarify the mechanistic aspects of adverse events
