Emigration and development in the European periphery: Portugal’s case

    Get PDF
In the literature on the relationship between migration and development, it is common to assess the impacts of migration on countries of origin and on destination countries separately (see Goldin, Cameron and Blarajan, 2011: 162‑210). Strictly speaking, this differentiation tends to correspond to another one, made in practice but rarely specified, which involves the overlap between country of origin and developing country, on the one hand, and between country of destination and developed country, on the other. Transposing many of the conclusions of this literature to analyse the impacts of emigration in a country of origin classified as of high human development, like Portugal, is often difficult, requiring a careful selection of what is or is not applicable and analytical readiness to identify and explain particular dynamics of this type of countries: developed countries of emigration.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The Left-Right SU(3)(L)xSU(3)(R)xU(1)(X) Model with Light, keV and Heavy Neutrinos

We construct a full left-right model for the electroweak interactions based on the SU(3)L⊗SU(3)R⊗U(1)XSU(3)_{L}\otimes SU(3)_{R}\otimes U(1)_{X} gauge symmetry. The fermion content of the model is such that anomaly cancellation restricts the number of families to be a multiple of three. One of the most important features of the model is the joint presence of three light active neutrinos, three additional neutrinos at keV mass scale, and six heavy ones with masses around\textbf{101110^{11}} GeV. They form a well-motivated part of the spectrum in the sense they address challenging problems related to neutrino oscillation, warm dark matter, and baryogenesis through leptogenesis.Comment: 11 pages. Small corrections and typos fixed. Accepted for publication in PR

Neutrino Decay and Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in a 3-3-1 Model

In this work we show that the implementation of spontaneous breaking of the lepton number in the 3-3-1 model with right-handed neutrinos gives rise to fast neutrino decay with majoron emission and generates a bunch of new contributions to the neutrinoless double beta decay.Comment: Version accepted for publication in the Phys. Rev.

Cosmology of Brane-Bulk Models in Five Dimensions

    Get PDF
We study the cosmology of models with four space and one time dimension where our universe is a 3-brane and report a few results which extend existing work in several directions. Assuming a stable fifth dimension, we obtain a solution for the metric, which does not depend on any arbitrary parameters. We discuss some implications of this result.Comment: Minor changes: brane energy conservation law and some typos corrected. All main results unchanged. 11 pages, no figures, LaTeX fil

The speed of sound and isentropic compressibility of liquid difluoromethane (HFC32) fromT=(248 to 343) K and pressures up to 65 MPa

    Get PDF
This work reports experimental data on the speed of sound in liquid difluoromethane ŽHFC32, or R32. from T s Ž248 to 343. K and pressures up to 65 MPa. The results were obtained using a newly-built apparatus, calibrated with toluene over the whole experimental region, and show good agreement with two available data sets. The uncertainties are "0.01 K in the temperature, "0.025 MPa in the pressure up to 35 MPa, and "0.2 MPa above this value. The final uncertainty on the speed of sound is estimated to be "0.2 per cent. The data were fitted using a simple analytical equation and the results are discussed. The isentropic compressibility was calculated over the Ž p, T. surface where the reported speed of sound values and the corresponding literature densities overlap.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The speed of sound, and derived thermodynamic properties of liquid trifluoromethane (HFC23) fromT=(258 to 303)K at pressures up to 65MPa

    Get PDF
This work reports experimental data of the speed of sound in liquid trifluoromethane (HFC23, or R23) from T = (258 to 303) K at pressures up to 65 MPa, measured with a pulse-echo method adapted from Papadakis(1) and Guedes et al.(2) The results are fitted to a rational approximant and compared with literature data.(3) Derived thermodynamic properties such as the isentropic compressibility κs, the isothermal compressibility κT , the cubic expansion coefficient αp, and the specific heat capacity at constant pressure cp are calculated by combining the present experimental data with the density values published by other authors.(4–11) The estimated properties are compared, where possible, with literature data.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Labour market policy thematic review 2018: an in-depth analysis of the emigration of skilled labour, Portugal

    Get PDF
Following a downturn after 25 April 1974, Portuguese emigration grew steadily once the country joined the EU in 1986 and has accelerated since 2000. The economic trends of stagnation and downward pressure on public investment that followed Portugal’s accession to the Euro generated increased emigration during the first two decades of the 21st Century, mainly due to worsening labour market conditions (Pires et al. 2015; Peixoto et al. 2016). This increase was interrupted by the financial crisis of 2008-10 but reinforced during the fiscal consolidation of 2011-14.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
