Thick GEM-like multipliers - a simple solution for large area UV-RICH detectors
We report on the properties of thick GEM-like (THGEM) electron multipliers
made of 0.4 mm thick double-sided Cu-clad G-10 plates, perforated with a dense
hexagonal array of 0.3 mm diameter drilled holes. Photon detectors comprising
THGEMs coupled to semi-transparent CsI photocathodes or reflective ones
deposited on the THGEM surface were studied with Ar/CO2 (70:30), Ar/CH4 (95:5),
CH4 and CF4. Gains of ~100000 or exceeding 1000000 were reached with single- or
double-THGEM, respectively; the signals have 5-10 ns rise times. The electric
field configurations at the THGEM electrodes result in an efficient extraction
of photoelectrons and their focusing into the holes; this occurs already at
rather low gains, below 100. These detectors, with single-photon sensitivity
and with expected sub-millimeter localization, can operate at MHz/mm2 rates. We
discuss their prospects for large-area UV-photon imaging for RICH.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Advances in Thick GEM-like gaseous electron multipliers. Part I: atmospheric pressure operation
Thick GEM-like (THGEM) gaseous electron multipliers are made of standard
printed-circuit board perforated with sub-millimeter diameter holes, etched at
their rims. Effective gas multiplication factors of 100000 and 10000000 and
fast pulses in the few nanosecond rise-time scale were reached in single- and
cascaded double-THGEM elements, in atmospheric-pressure standard gas mixtures
with single photoelectrons. High single-electron detection efficiency is
obtained in photon detectors combining THGEMs and semitransparent UV-sensitive
CsI photocathodes or reflective ones deposited on the top THGEM face; the
latter benefits of a reduced sensitivity to ionizing background radiation.
Stable operation was recorded with photoelectron fluxes exceeding MHz/mm2. The
properties and some potential applications of these simple and robust

Ion-induced effects in GEM & GEM/MHSP gaseous photomultipliers for the UV and the visible spectral range
We report on the progress in the study of cascaded GEM and GEM/MHSP gas
avalanche photomultipliers operating at atmospheric pressure, with CsI and
bialkali photocathodes. They have single-photon sensitivity, ns time resolution
and good localization properties. We summarize operational aspects and results,
with the highlight of a high-gain stable gated operation of a visible-light
device. Of particular importance are the results of a recent ion-backflow
reduction study in different cascaded multipliers, affecting the detector's
stability and the photocathode's liftime. We report on the significant progress
in ion-blocking and provide first results on bialkali-photocathode aging under

The ACE Gene Is Associated with Late-Life Major Depression and Age at Dementia Onset in a Population-Based Cohort
Objective
Depression and dementia in the elderly have been suggested to share similar risk factors and pathogenetic background, and recently the authors reported that the APOEɛ4 allele is a risk factor for both disorders in the general population. The aim of the present study was to examine the influence of the well-known polymorphisms rs1799752 in the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and rs5186 in the angiotensin receptor II type 1 (AGTR1) on late-life depression and dementia in a population-based Swedish cohort of older individuals followed over 12 years.
Methods
In 2000–2001, 900 individuals underwent neuropsychiatric and neuropsychological examinations. Follow-up evaluations were performed in 2005–2006 and 2009–2010, and register data on dementia to 2012 were included. Cross-sectional associations between genotypes/alleles and depression and dementia at baseline and between genotypes/alleles and depression on at least one occasion during the study period and dementia onset to 2012 were investigated.
Results
As previously found for rs1799752 in ACE, rs5186 in AGTR1 was associated with dementia at baseline (OR: 3.25 [CI: 1.42–7.06], z = 2.90, p = 0.004). These associations became substantially weaker, or disappeared, when dementia onset to 2012 was included. For rs1799752 this could be explained by a significant association with age at onset (mean: 79.5 [SD: 6.45] years for risk-genotype carriers and 81.7 [SD: 7.12] years for carriers of other genotypes, b = −2.43, t = −2.38, df = 192, p = 0.02). When individuals with major depression on at least one occasion were analyzed, a significant association (OR: 2.14 [95% CI: 1.13–4.20], z = 2.28, p = 0.02), remaining after exclusion of dementia, with rs1799752 in ACE was found.
Conclusion
In this population-based sample of older individuals, genetic variations in ACE seem to be important both for late-life major depression and dementia

A number of different plasma chemistries, including NF{sub 3}/O{sub 2}, SF{sub 6}/O{sub 2}, SF{sub 6}/Ar, ICl, IBr, Cl{sub 2}/Ar, BCl{sub 3}/Ar and CH{sub 4}/H{sub 2}/Ar, have been investigated for dry etching of 6H and 3C-SiC in a Inductively Coupled Plasma tool. Rates above 2,000 {angstrom} cm{sup {minus}1} are found with fluorine-based chemistries at high ion currents. Surprisingly, Cl{sub 2}-based etching does not provide high rates, even though the potential etch products (SiCi{sub 4} and CCl{sub 4}) are volatile. Photoresist masks have poor selectivity over SiC in F{sub 2}-based plasmas under normal conditions, and ITO or Ni are preferred
Cognitive neuroscience of delusions in aging
Assessments and clinical understanding of late-onset delusions in the elderly are inconsistent and often incomplete. In this review, we consider the prevalence, neurobehavioral features, and neuroanatomic correlations of delusions in elderly persons – those with documented cognitive decline and those with no evidence of cognitive decline. Both groups exhibit a common phenotype: delusions are either of persecution or of misidentification. Late-onset delusions show a nearly complete absence of the grandiose, mystical, or erotomanic content typical of early onset psychoses. Absent also from both elderly populations are formal thought disorders, thought insertions, and delusions of external control. Neuroimaging and behavioral studies suggest a frontotemporal localization of delusions in the elderly, with right hemispheric lateralization in delusional misidentification and left lateralization in delusions of persecution. We propose that delusions in the elderly reflect a common neuroanatomic and functional phenotype, and we discuss applications of our proposal to diagnosis and treatment

The published version is available from http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/02773940902766748 .Following the exposure of televangelist Jimmy Swaggart’s illicit rendezvous with a New Orleans prostitute, the Assemblies of God simultaneously orchestrated a massive attempt to silence those who would discuss the tryst and arranged the most widely publicized confession in American history theretofore. The coincidence of a “silence campaign” with the vast distribution of a public confession invites us to reconsider the nature of the public confession. For what place has a public confession, the discourse of disclosure par excellence, in a silence campaign? This question is best answered, I argue, if we understand public confession not as a stable a-historical form, but as a practice that is informed by multiple, competing traditions. I argue that by situating Swaggart’s performance in a philosophically modern and secular tradition of public confession we can understand both its complicity in a silence campaign and, more generally, the political logic of the modern public confession
