    COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF SOME MINERAL PROFILE OF HONEY MARKETED AND CONSUMED IN SOME OF THE STATES IN NORTHERN PART OF COUNTRY (NIGERIA)

    Honey and honey trade is an important economic activity for many tropical rural and urban areas worldwide. In West Africa and other part of the world, honey and honey products holds high socio–cultural, religious, medicinal and traditional values. Therefore, to maximize benefits or to enhance profit, a variety of components are added to the raw, fresh and unprocessed honey, introducing the possibility of heavy metals contaminants. Therefore the honey sold in various places, markets and shops  in some states in Northern Nigeria (Benue, Nassarawa and Taraba) including Abuja FCT, in Nigeria was analyzed to determine the level of heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn). All the honey samples contain heavy metals. The results ranged from 0.028–0.070, 0.023–0.058, 0.042–0.092, 4.231–8.589, 8.115–14.892, 0.078–0.922, 0.044–0.092, 0.041–0.087 and 18.234–28.654 μg/L for Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn respectively. The mean concentration (μg/L) of the heavy metals Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn of the regularly marketed honey is significantly higher than the mean concentration observed in raw, fresh and unprocessed honey. However, continued consumption of honey with high heavy metal content might lead to exposure to chronic heavy metal poisoning

    A Comparative Assessment of the Fatty Acid and Phospholipid Composition of Irvingia Gabonensis (African Wild Mango) and Citrullus Lanatus (Water Melon) Seed Oils

    The fatty acid composition of Irvingia gabonensis (African wild mango) and Citrullus lanatus (water melon) seed oils were determined using gas chromatographic technique with flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The results indicated eight fatty acids in Citrullus lanatus and eleven in Irvingia gabonensis seed oils. Comparatively, fatty acids common to both seed oils are linoleic acid (61.07%, 22.98%), oleic acid (13.48%, 21.87%), palmitic acid (15.40%, 16.69%), palmitoleic acid (0.53%, 6.32%), linolenic acid   (0.52% , 17.55%) and erucic acid (0.54%,0.88%). Lauric acid, arachidic acid, myristic acid and behenic acid though found in Irvingia gabonensis were not traceable in citrullus lanatus while arachidonic acid was present in citrullus lanatus but not in irvingia gabonensis. Margaric acid and lignoceric acid were not found in both seed oils. Irvingia gabonensis seed oil presented potential for making hard soaps. The seed oils generally presented potential for industrial use. Phospholipid levels in Citrullus Lanatus and Irvingia gabonensis seed oils on the other hand was also determined using gas chromatographic technique with pulse flame photometric detector (GC-PFPD). The result showed six phospholipids in each seed oil namely phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylserine, lysophosphatidylcholine and phosphatidic acid. The total phospholipid levels in Citrullus lanatus seed oil is higher (935.65 mg/100g) than that in Irvingia gabonensis (239.89 mg/100g) seed oils. Phosphatidylcholine was the most abundant in both seed oils while phosphatidylserine was the least concentrated. Citrullus lanatus seed oils present a higher potential for health benefits based on their phospholipid levels than Irvingia gabonensis. The study indicates that Irvingia gabonensis and citrullus lanatus would be useful in soap making industries and for improved health benefits respectively.     Exposure to Violence and Sleep Inadequacies among Men and Women Living in a Shelter Setting

    Exposure to violence may explain sleep inadequacies reported by homeless adults, with women being potentially more susceptible to violence and sleep disturbances than men. This study examined the association between violence and sleep inadequacies among homeless adults and explored differences by sex. Adult participants were recruited from a shelter (n = 194; 71.1% men, Mage = 43.8+12.2). Participants self-reported victimization and/or witnessing violence (mugging, fight, and/or sexual assault) at the shelter, sleep duration (over an average 24 hours), insufficient sleep (days without sufficient rest/sleep), and unintentional daytime sleep (days with unintentional sleep) in the past month. Linear regressions were used to estimate associations between violence and sleep inadequacies, controlling for sex, age, race, months homeless, and depression. Moderation by sex was examined via an interaction term following mean-centering of variables. Overall, 20.6% of participants (n = 40) reported victimization since moving to the shelter. In the last month, participants reported witnessing an average of 2.9+5.1 acts of violence. Over the same timeframe, participants reported 6.9+2.0 hours of sleep nightly, 11.2+10.7 days of insufficient sleep, and 6.2+8.8 days with unintentional daytime sleep. In adjusted analyses, witnessing violence was associated with insufficient sleep (p = .001). Men and women differed only in age and race in unadjusted analyses; sex was not a significant moderator of any association between violence and sleep in adjusted analyses. Links between witnessing violence and sleep inadequacies should be considered in shelter health promotion efforts. Successful efforts to minimize violence may reduce insufficient sleep amongst both sexes

    Health Literacy and Self-Rated Health among Homeless Adults

    Poor health literacy reduces the efficacy of behavior change interventions, hampers management of health conditions, and attenuates understanding of the prevention and treatment of diseases. Poor health literacy has also been linked to fair/poor self-rated health in domiciled samples; however, there is a paucity of studies on the relation amongst homeless adults, who bear a disproportionate burden of disease and disability and require a high level of care and access to health services. Here, we examined the association between health literacy and self-rated health among a convenience sample of homeless adults. Participants were recruited from six homeless-serving agencies in Oklahoma City (N = 575; 63% men, Mage = 43.6+12.3). We used logistic regression to assess the association between health literacy (confidence completing medical forms: extremely/quite a bit versus somewhat/little bit/not at all) and self-rated health (poor/fair versus good/very good/excellent), controlling for age, subjective social status, education, race, sex, income, health insurance, employment, social security recipient status, diabetes diagnosis, high blood pressure diagnosis, and high cholesterol diagnosis. In the adjusted model, health literate homeless individuals had greater odds of endorsing good/very good/excellent self-rated health compared to those somewhat/a little bit/not at all confident completing medical forms (AOR = 2.02, [CI95% = 1.35-3.02]). Interventions targeted at adjusting reading level and comprehensibility of health information are needed for homeless individuals with poor/limited health literacy, which may ultimately impact their self-rated health. Shelters and homeless-serving agencies could host classes focused on practical skills for enhancing health literacy and/or provide navigation services

    Effect of Processing on Nutritional Composition of African Locust Bean (Parkia biglobosa) and Mesquite Bean (Prosopis africana) Seeds

    The African locust bean (Parkia biglobosa) and mesquite bean (Prosopis africana) are both perennial tree legumes which belong to the family Leguminoseae. A comparative study was conducted on them to determine the effect of fermenting on the nutritional composition of their seeds. For this purpose, proximate, mineral and amino acid compositions were determined using standard analytical techniques. The result showed that fermented sample of Parkia biglobosa seeds had the highest content of crude protein (25.16%) and crude fat (12.27%) while the raw sample of Prosopis africana had the highest values of crude fibre (11.35%). Potassium was the most abundant mineral in all the samples with fermented P. biglobosa recording the highest value of 51.00 mg/100g. Generally, raw and fermented samples of P. biglobosa and P. africana seed flours were found to be a good source of essential minerals, and harmful heavy metals such as lead and cadmium were below the detection limit of atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The amino acid profile revealed that fermenting enhanced total amino acid (TAA), total essential amino acid (TEAA), essential alphatic amino acid (EAAA), essential aromatic amino acid (EArAA) and total sulphur amino acids (TSAA). The limiting amino acids (LAA) for raw and fermented samples of P. biglobosa were Met + Cys (TSAA) and Thr, respectively while that of P. africana was TSAA for the raw and fermented samples. Sufficient proportions of the essential amino acids were retained after fermenting of Parkia biglobosa and Prosopis africana seeds to meet FAO dietary requirement

    Cross-Reactivity of Two SARS-CoV-2 Serological Assays in a Setting Where Malaria Is Endemic

    Background: Accurate SARS-CoV-2 serological assays are critical for COVID-19 serosurveillance. However, previous studies have indicated possible cross-reactivity of these assays, including in malaria-endemic areas.Methods: We tested 213 well-characterized pre-pandemic samples from Nigeria using two SARS-CoV-2 serological assays: Abbott Architect IgG and Euroimmun NCP IgG assay, both targeting SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein. To assess antibody binding strength, an avidity assay was performed on these samples and on plasma from SARS-CoV-2 PCR-positive persons.Results: Thirteen (6.1%) of 212 samples run on the Abbott assay and 38 (17.8%) of 213 run on the Euroimmun assay were positive. Anti-Plasmodium IgG levels were significantly higher among false-positives for both Abbott and Euroimmun; no association was found with active P. falciparum infection. An avidity assay using various concentratIons of urea wash in the Euroimmun assay reduced loosely-bound IgG: of 37 positive/borderline pre-pandemic samples, 46%, 86%, 89%, and 97% became negative using 2M, 4M, 5M, and 8M urea washes, respectively. The wash slightly reduced avidity of antibodies from SARS-CoV-2 patients within 28 days of PCR confirmation; thereafter avidity increased for all urea concentrations except 8M.Conclusions: This validation found moderate to substantial cross-reactivity on two SARS-CoV-2 serological assays using samples from a malaria-endemic setting. A simple urea wash appeared to alleviate issues of cross-reactivity

    Validation of xMAP SARS-CoV-2 Multi-Antigen IgG assay in Nigeria

    Objective: There is a need for reliable serological assays to determine accurate estimates of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) seroprevalence. Most single target antigen assays have shown some limitations in Africa. To assess the performance of a multi-antigen assay, we evaluated a commercially available SARS-CoV-2 Multi-Antigen IgG assay for human coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Nigeria. / Methods: Validation of the xMAP SARS-CoV-2 Multi-Antigen IgG assay was carried out using well-characterized SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcription polymerase chain reactive positive (97) and pre-COVID-19 pandemic (86) plasma panels. Cross-reactivity was assessed using pre-COVID-19 pandemic plasma specimens (213) from the 2018 Nigeria HIV/AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS). / Results: The overall sensitivity of the xMAP SARS-CoV-2 Multi-Antigen IgG assay was 75.3% [95% CI: 65.8%– 82.8%] and specificity was 99.0% [95% CI: 96.8%– 99.7%]. The sensitivity estimate increased to 83.3% [95% CI: 70.4%– 91.3%] for specimens >14 days post-confirmation of diagnosis. However, using the NAIIS pre-pandemic specimens, the false positivity rate was 1.4% (3/213). / Conclusions: Our results showed overall lower sensitivity and a comparable specificity with the manufacturer’s validation. There appears to be less cross-reactivity with NAIIS pre-pandemic COVID-19 specimens using the xMAP SARS-CoV-2 Multi-Antigen IgG assay. In-country SARS-CoV-2 serology assay validation can help guide the best choice of assays in Africa
