    Edward Said’s Orientalism and the Study of the Self and the Other in Orwell’s Burmese Days

    Critics unanimously regard Said’s Orientalism as the cornerstone of postcolonial canon. It was this celebrated work that generated other related books and materials. Orientalism is a Western style for Orientalizing the Orient, i.e. how from knowledge of the Orient particularly from nineteenth century the Orient is defined by a set of recurring images and clichés and how afterwards this knowledge of the Orient is put into practice by colonialism and imperialism. Orientalism is affiliated with the representation of the Self or Occident and the Other or Orient in which the Self is privileged and has upper hand to define, reconstruct the passive, silent and weak Other. For Said, this geographical line made between the Occident and the Orient is arbitrary and numerous Western scholars, orientalists such as Burton, Lane, Lyall, Massignon, among others and literary figures like Aeschylus, Shakespeare, Austin, Flaubert, Kipling, Conrad, etc. contributed to the shaping of this discourse about the Orient and/or misrepresenting the Orient. Orwell as a Western writer was born in India and served five years in Indian Imperial Police in Burma and one of his major concerns during his life was the issue of imperialism and colonialism which is reflected in many works such as Burmese Days, Shooting an Elephant, Marrakech and Hanging. One characteristic which is shared among these western works and similar ones is the author’s conflicting feelings within them about the Orient and Orientals through Western’s lens. In this study, the relationship of the representer or Westerners and the represented or Easterners is fully expounded in Burmese Days in the light of Said’s Orientalism.Key words: Edward Said; Orientalism; Binary opposition; Orwell; The Self and the Other; Burmese Day

    Understanding Port Efficiency: A CPEC Perspective

    This paper aims to provide an insight into the efficacious use and development of Pakistani ports located along the ChinaPakistan Economic corridor. The main objective of this paper is to understand how the physical infrastructure, logistics suprastructure and value-added services contribute in the enhancing port efficiency in the wake of CPEC operationalization. A sample of 15 well-experienced respondents from the domains of supply chain management, logistics, trade and public sector were selected. The study concluded that physical infrastructure, logistics suprastructure and logistics services at a port play a vital role in improving port efficiency. The study further pointed out that adequate port structure and value-added services would significantly contribute to port efficiency and facilitate the smooth clearance of CPEC cargo

    Crystallography, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity of heavy fermion LiV2_2O4_4 single crystals grown using a self-flux technique

    Magnetically pure spinel compound LiV2O4{\rm LiV_2O_4} is a rare dd-electron heavy fermion. Measurements on single crystals are needed to clarify the mechanism for the heavy fermion behavior in the pure material. In addition, it is known that small concentrations (<1< 1 mol%) of magnetic defects in the structure strongly affect the properties, and measurements on single crystals containing magnetic defects would help to understand the latter behaviors. Herein, we report flux growth of LiV2O4{\rm LiV_2O_4} and preliminary measurements to help resolve these questions. The magnetic susceptibility of some as-grown crystals show a Curie-like upturn at low temperatures, showing the presence of magnetic defects within the spinel structure. The magnetic defects could be removed in some of the crystals by annealing them at 700 ∘^\circC\@. A very high specific heat coefficient γ\gamma = 450 mJ/(mol K2{^2}\@) was obtained at a temperature of 1.8 K for a crystal containing a magnetic defect concentration nndefect{\rm_{defect}} = 0.5 mol%.     Mobile Power Infrastructure Planning and Operational Management for Smart City Applications

    The paper presents new strategies and algorithms for future mobile power infrastructure planning and operational management in smart cities. The efforts have been made to develop a resilient Electric Vehicle (EV) infrastructure for smart city applications. The goal of this work is to maximize the profit of utility and EV owners participating in real-time smart city energy market subjected to numerous techno-economic constraints of the EVs and power distribution system. For effective real-time applications, the knowledge of artificial intelligence and internet of things (IoT) are used in the proposed model. In order to validate the proposed model for smart city applications, IEEE 33-bus radial distribution network is adopted as a small city power network. The simulation results of proposed model are found to be encouraging when it is compared with the case in which conventional strategies are used

    Modified Taguchi-Based Approach for Optimal Distributed Generation Mix in Distribution Networks

    In this paper, a new two-stage optimization framework is proposed to determine the optimal-mix integration of dispatchable Distributed Generation (DG), in power distribution networks, in order to maximize various techno-economic and social benefits simultaneously. The proposed framework incorporates some of the newly introduced regulatory policies to facilitate low carbon networks. A modified Taguchi Method (TM), in combination with a node priority list, is proposed to solve the problem in a minimum number of experiments. Nevertheless, the standard TM is computationally fast but has some inherent tendencies of local trapping and usually converges to suboptimal solutions. Therefore, two modifications are suggested. A roulette wheel selection criterion is applied on priority list to select the most promising DG nodes and then modified TM determines the optimal DG sizes at these nodes. The proposed approach is implemented on two standard test distribution systems of 33 and 118 buses. To validate the suggested improvements, various algorithm performance parameters such as convergence characteristic, best and worst fitness values, and standard deviation are compared with existing variants of TM, and improved genetic algorithm. The comparison shows that the suggested corrections significantly improve the robustness and global searching ability of TM, even compared to meta-heuristic methods

    Phase Relations in the Li2O-V2O3-V2O5 System at 700 C: Correlations with Magnetic Defect Concentration in Heavy Fermion LiV2O4

    The phase relations in the Li2O-V2O3-V2O5 ternary system at 700 C for compositions in equilibrium with LiV2O4 are reported. This study clarified the synthesis conditions under which low and high magnetic defect concentrations can be obtained within the spinel structure of LiV2O4. We confirmed that the LiV2O4 phase can be obtained containing low (0.006 mol%) to high (0.83 mol%) magnetic defect concentrations n{defect} and with consistently high magnetic defect spin S values between 3 and 6.5. The high n{defect} values were obtained in the LiV2O4 phase in equilibrium with V2O3, Li3VO4, or LiVO2 and the low values in the LiV2O4 phase in equilibrium with V3O5.
