    Size at first maturity of Terapon jarbua was studied based on 114 male (14 to 28 cm in TL) and 140 female (14 to 32 cm in TL). The Logistic curves describing the relationship between the sexes and the proportion of 50% maturity (Lm50) were estimated at 20.8 cm in male and 21.8 cm in female of Terapon jarbua. The male reached 50% first sexual maturity at smaller lengths than female in this species. The gonads were classified into five maturity stages based on the size, colour and texture.  Month wise predominance of different stage of maturity deferred during different months

    Estimation of Fecundity and Gonadosomatic Index of Terapon jarbua from Pondicherry Coast, India

    In the present study fecundity of Terapon jarbua was estimated for 41 matured females from the Bay of Bengal, Pondicherry. The fecundity (F) was found to range from 13,475 to 115,920 in fishes between 173-278mm Total length (TL) and 65- 298 gm weight respectively. The co-efficient of correlation for F/TL (log F = - 4.821 + 4.146 log TL), F/SL (log F = -3.936 + 3.867 log SL), F/WF (log F = 1.229 + 0.730 log TW) and F/GW (log F = 0.724 + 1.113 log GW) were obtained as 0.474, 0.537, 0.641 and 0.908 respectively. The regression line for the TL, SL, WF and GW of the fishes were found to be linear when they were plotted against their fecundity on logarithmic scales. Highly significant (P<0.01) relationship was obtained for all the variables. Hence Total Length, Standard Length, Weight of Fish and Gonad Weight were found to be the best indicators of the fecundity of Terapon jarbua. Gonadosomatic indices of Terapon jarbua showed that the spawning took place in February to July. The overall sex ratio of male to female is 1.28:1 with chi-square value 5.719, significant at 5% level

    Comparative study on condition factors of <i>Terapon jarbua</i> and <i>Terapon puta</i> from Puducherry waters

    245-249The condition factor values between male and female Terapon jarbua and Terapon puta were examined. Mean values of both the species showed there was statistically slight difference and the difference was in favour of female. From the present study, it is noticed that the Kn values of male and female Terapon jarbua and Terapon puta are greater than one in most of the months in the year 2009-2010

    The present study investigates the length-weight relationship of Terapon jarbua from Puducherry (East coast of India). A total of 370 individuals of different sizes were collected from Puducherry landings centre. Length-weight relationships were calculated for all specimens sampled. The length weight relationship equations are W = 0.0050 L3.2742 ; W = 0.0035 L3.3616 ; W = 0.0736 L2.4076 ; W = 0.0098 L3.0807 ; W = 0.0088 L3.0914 ; W = 0.0038 L3.3776 for immature male, immature female, matured male, matured female, total male and total female respectively.     Abstract A preliminary investigation of length-weight relationship, condition factor and reproductive ecology of African pike fish, Hepsetus odoe, was conducted between June to August 2010 in Lake Eleiyele. A total of 90 samples of the fish species were caught by fishermen using gill nets. The results obtained showed that fish species had isometric growth pattern (contrary to negative allometry expected) with the growth exponent, b value of 2.64, that is not statistically different from 3 and with high statistical power of 0.866 when tested. The mean condition factor, K, was found to be 2.6, indicating that the fish species were in good condition in the study area. For reproductive biology, mean fecundity and gonadosomatic index were found to be 1349 eggs and 3.53% respectively. This study was necessary to fill the knowledge gap and provide information for management and conservation of the investigated species in the lake system. This study recommended that further research needs to be conducted because the sampling was carried out in the rainy season period and within a quarter of a year
