An Exploratory Analysis of Father Involvement in Low-Income Families

Using data from the Fragile Families study, this paper explores factors that influence paternal involvement in low-income families. 4873 fathers from the Fragile Families study were classified using CART (Classification and Regression Tree Analysis). CART is a nonparametric technique that allows many different factors to be combined in order to classify homogeneous subgroups within a sample. The CART analysis distinguished between residential and non-residential fathers. In addition, among residential fathers, race emerged as the distinguishing factor. For White men, residential status was the only factor to affect involvement. For African American and Hispanic men however, interactions among several sociodemographic characteristics revealed that both contextual and individual factors affect paternal involvement. Results suggest that an ecological approach is necessary in the investigation of paternal involvement.

An Empirical Test of a Free-Will Centered, Phenomenological Approach to Organizational Behavior Education: Working Paper Series--97-04

This paper presents the initial validation of a Free-will Centered, Phenomenological Approach to Organizational Behavior Education. This approach is based on a subjective science which operates in a subjective truth system. This truth is a truth of value--of what is truly valuable for the quality of human experience. The theory predicts that a classroom aimed at teaching such knowledge would result in students moving in the direction of becoming self-actualizing persons, and this paper summarizes a test of the validity of this prediction. Specifically a group of college seniors was exposed to the theory and suitable pre, post and six-month follow-up measures were taken to determine the effect (if any) of the experience upon them. In general, the prediction that learning the theory would result in movement toward being a self-actualizing person was found to be valid. Thus, we can, in a course in organizational behavior, actually help students become healthier human beings, and, presumably also, then, better managers and leaders

Touched and Knit in the Life: Barclay\u27s Relational Theology and Cartesian Dualism

I argue in this paper that Robert Barclay fundamentally uses a relational method in doing theology notwithstanding a growing scholarly consensus that his thought is shaped by Cartesian dualism. The claims of dualism in Barclay are assessed through a close textual interpretation of parts of his 1676 work, An Apology for the True Christian Divinity, and his subsequent essay \u27The Possibility and Necessity of the Inward and Immediate Revelation of the Spirit of God\u27. While he explicitly engages Cartesian dualism in this latter work, my conclusion is that when he is arguing apologetically with someone employing dualist categories, as in this essay, he uses Cartesian language in order to find common ground with his audience; but when he reflects on his own experience, he thinks relationally rather than dualistically. That he does not disjoin the self from God, other selves, or its own body, nor does he separate the inward and biblical Christ, has been obscured by his apologetic use of Cartesian dualism. In recognizing his relational approach, we can discover in Barclay\u27s thought a resource for doing Quaker theology today that responds to George Fox\u27s question, \u27What canst thou say?\u27
