The Effelsberg-Bonn HI Survey (EBHIS)
The new L-band 7-feed-array at the 100-m telescope in Effelsberg will be used
to perform an unbiased fully sampled HI survey of the entire northern
hemisphere observing the galactic and extragalactic sky using simultaneously
two different backends.
The survey will be extremely valuable for a broad range of research topics:
study of the low-mass end of the HI mass function (HIMF) in the local volume,
environmental and evolutionary effects (as seen in the HIMF), the search for
galaxies near low-redshift Lyman-alpha absorbers, and analysis of multiphase

Storage of correlated patterns in a perceptron
We calculate the storage capacity of a perceptron for correlated gaussian
patterns. We find that the storage capacity can be less than 2 if
similar patterns are mapped onto different outputs and vice versa. As long as
the patterns are in general position we obtain, in contrast to previous works,
that in agreement with Cover's theorem. Numerical simulations

A morphological algorithm for improving radio-frequency interference detection
A technique is described that is used to improve the detection of
radio-frequency interference in astronomical radio observatories. It is applied
on a two-dimensional interference mask after regular detection in the
time-frequency domain with existing techniques. The scale-invariant rank (SIR)
operator is defined, which is a one-dimensional mathematical morphology
technique that can be used to find adjacent intervals in the time or frequency
domain that are likely to be affected by RFI. The technique might also be
applicable in other areas in which morphological scale-invariant behaviour is
desired, such as source detection. A new algorithm is described, that is shown
to perform quite well, has linear time complexity and is fast enough to be
applied in modern high resolution observatories. It is used in the default

Correlated patterns in non-monotonic graded-response perceptrons
The optimal capacity of graded-response perceptrons storing biased and
spatially correlated patterns with non-monotonic input-output relations is
studied. It is shown that only the structure of the output patterns is

Does Boris-SDC conserve phase space volume?
In this paper we investigate the conservation of phase space volume of the Boris-SDC algorithm. This method provides a generic way to extend the standard, second-order accurate Lorentz force integrator commonly used for charged particles in an electric and magnetic field to a high-order method using spectral deferred corrections. For a single particle in a Penning trap and different frequencies of the electric and magnetic fields, we assess the conservation properties of the method by computing the update matrix of one step of Boris-SDC as well as its determinant. We compare the results to the convergence regions and relate them to energy conservation properties of the method

A GBT Survey of the HALOGAS Galaxies and Their Environments I: Revealing the full extent of HI around NGC891, NGC925, NGC4414 & NGC4565
We present initial results from a deep neutral hydrogen (HI) survey of the
HALOGAS galaxy sample, which includes the spiral galaxies NGC891, NGC925,
NGC4414, and NGC4565, performed with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope
(GBT). The resulting observations cover at least four deg around these
galaxies with an average 5 detection limit of 1.210
cm over a velocity range of 20 km s and angular scale of 9.1.
In addition to detecting the same total flux as the GBT data, the spatial
distribution of the GBT and original Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope
(WSRT) data match well at equal spatial resolutions. The HI mass fraction below
HI column densities of 10 cm is, on average, 2\%. We discuss the
possible origins of low column density HI of nearby spiral galaxies. The
absence of a considerable amount of newly detected HI by the GBT indicates
these galaxies do not have significant extended diffuse HI structures, and
suggests future surveys planned with the SKA and its precursors must go
\textit{at least} as deep as 10 cm in column density to
significantly increase the probability of detecting HI associated with the

Extremely Metal-Poor Galaxies: The HI Content
Extremely metal-poor (XMP) galaxies are chemically, and possibly dynamically,
primordial objects in the local Universe. Our objective is to characterize the
HI content of the XMP galaxies as a class, using as a reference the list of 140
known local XMPs compiled by Morales-Luis et al. (2011). We have observed 29
XMPs, which had not been observed before at 21 cm, using the Effelsberg radio
telescope. This information was complemented with HI data published in
literature for a further 53 XMPs. In addition, optical data from the literature
provided morphologies, stellar masses, star-formation rates and metallicities.
Effelsberg HI integrated flux densities are between 1 and 15 Jy km/s, while
line widths are between 20 and 120 km/s. HI integrated flux densities and line
widths from literature are in the range 0.1 - 200 Jy km/s and 15 - 150 km/s,
respectively. Of the 10 new Effelsberg detections, two sources show an
asymmetric double-horn profile, while the remaining sources show either
asymmetric (7 sources) or symmetric (1 source) single-peak 21 cm line profiles.
An asymmetry in the HI line profile is systematically accompanied by an
asymmetry in the optical morphology. Typically, the g-band stellar
mass-to-light ratios are ~0.1, whereas the HI gas mass-to-light ratios may be
up to 2 orders of magnitude larger. Moreover, HI gas-to-stellar mass ratios
fall typically between 10 and 20, denoting that XMPs are extremely gas-rich. We
find an anti-correlation between the HI gas mass-to-light ratio and the
luminosity, whereby fainter XMPs are more gas-rich than brighter XMPs,
suggesting that brighter sources have converted a larger fraction of their HI
gas into stars. The dynamical masses inferred from the HI line widths imply
that the stellar mass does not exceed 5% of the dynamical mass, while the
\ion{H}{i} mass constitutes between 20 and 60% of the dynamical mass.
