Co-constructing a new framework for evaluating social innovation in marginalized rural areas
The EU funded H2020 project \u2018Social Innovation in Marginalised Rural Areas\u2019 (SIMRA; www.simra-h2020.eu) has the overall objective of advancing the state-of-the-art in social innovation. This paper outlines the process for co- developing an evaluation framework with stakeholders, drawn from across Europe and the Mediterranean area, in the fields of agriculture, forestry and rural development. Preliminary results show the importance of integrating process and outcome-oriented evaluations, and implementing participatory approaches in evaluation practice. They also raise critical issues related to the comparability of primary data in diverse regional contexts and highlight the need for mixed methods approaches in evaluation
Critical and Near-Critical Branching Processes
Scale-free dynamics in physical and biological systems can arise from a
variety of causes. Here, we explore a branching process which leads to such
dynamics. We find conditions for the appearance of power laws and study
quantitatively what happens to these power laws when such conditions are
violated. From a branching process model, we predict the behavior of two
systems which seem to exhibit near scale-free behavior--rank-frequency
distributions of number of subtaxa in biology, and abundance distributions of
genotypes in an artificial life system. In the light of these, we discuss

Fractal geometry of spin-glass models
Stability and diversity are two key properties that living entities share
with spin glasses, where they are manifested through the breaking of the phase
space into many valleys or local minima connected by saddle points. The
topology of the phase space can be conveniently condensed into a tree
structure, akin to the biological phylogenetic trees, whose tips are the local
minima and internal nodes are the lowest-energy saddles connecting those
minima. For the infinite-range Ising spin glass with p-spin interactions, we
show that the average size-frequency distribution of saddles obeys a power law
, where w=w(s) is the number of minima that can be
connected through saddle s, and D is the fractal dimension of the phase space
More green and less blue water in the Alps during warmer summers
Climate change can reduce surface-water supply by enhancing evapotranspiration in forested mountains, especially during heatwaves. We investigate this ‘drought paradox’ for the European Alps using a 1,212-station database and hyper-resolution ecohydrological simulations to quantify blue (runoff) and green (evapotranspiration) water fluxes. During the 2003 heatwave, evapotranspiration in large areas over the Alps was above average despite low precipitation, amplifying the runoff deficit by 32% in the most runoff-productive areas (1,300–3,000 m above sea level). A 3 °C air temperature increase could enhance annual evapotranspiration by up to 100 mm (45 mm on average), which would reduce annual runoff at a rate similar to a 3% precipitation decrease. This suggests that green-water feedbacks—which are often poorly represented in large-scale model simulations—pose an additional threat to water resources, especially in dry summers. Despite uncertainty in the validation of the hyper-resolution ecohydrological modelling with observations, this approach permits more realistic predictions of mountain region water availability
Scaling properties of protein family phylogenies
One of the classical questions in evolutionary biology is how evolutionary
processes are coupled at the gene and species level. With this motivation, we
compare the topological properties (mainly the depth scaling, as a
characterization of balance) of a large set of protein phylogenies with a set
of species phylogenies. The comparative analysis shows that both sets of
phylogenies share remarkably similar scaling behavior, suggesting the
universality of branching rules and of the evolutionary processes that drive
biological diversification from gene to species level. In order to explain such
generality, we propose a simple model which allows us to estimate the
proportion of evolvability/robustness needed to approximate the scaling
behavior observed in the phylogenies, highlighting the relevance of the
robustness of a biological system (species or protein) in the scaling
properties of the phylogenetic trees. Thus, the rules that govern the
incapability of a biological system to diversify are equally relevant both at

An urban ecohydrological model to quantify the effect of vegetation on urban climate and hydrology (UT&C v1.0)
Increasing urbanization is likely to intensify the urban heat island effect, decrease outdoor thermal comfort and enhance runoff generation in cities. Urban green spaces are often proposed as a mitigation strategy to counteract these adverse effects and many recent developments of urban climate models focus on the inclusion of green and blue infrastructure to inform urban planning. However, many models still lack the ability to account for different plant types and oversimplify the interactions between the built environment, vegetation, and hydrology. In this study, we present an urban ecohydrological model, Urban Tethys-Chloris (UT&C), that combines principles of ecosystem modelling with an urban canopy scheme accounting for the biophysical and ecophysiological characteristics of roof vegetation, ground vegetation and urban trees. UT&C is a fully coupled energy and water balance model that calculates 2 m air temperature, 2 m humidity, and surface temperatures based on the infinite urban canyon approach. It further calculates all urban hydrological fluxes, including transpiration as a function of plant photosynthesis. Hence, UT&C accounts for the effects of different plant types on the urban climate and hydrology, as well as the effects of the urban environment on plant well-being and performance. UT&C performs well when compared against energy flux measurements of eddy covariance towers located in three cities in different climates (Singapore, Melbourne, Phoenix). A sensitivity analysis, performed as a proof of concept for the city of Singapore, shows a mean decrease in 2 m air temperature of 1.1 °C for fully grass covered ground, 0.2 °C for high values of leaf area index (LAI), and 0.3 °C for high values of Vc,max (an expression of photosynthetic activity). These reductions in temperature were combined with a simultaneous increase in relative humidity by 6.5 %, 2.1 %, and 1.6 %, for fully grass covered ground, high values of LAI, and high values of Vc,max, respectively. Furthermore, the increase of pervious vegetated ground is able to significantly reduce surface runoff. These results show that urban greening can lead to a decrease in urban air temperature and surface runoff, but this effect is limited in cities characterized by a hot, humid climate.ISSN:1991-962XISSN:1991-961
Real-life effectiveness and safety of guselkumab in patients with psoriasis who have an inadequate response to ustekinumab: A 104-week multicenter retrospective study – IL PSO (ITALIAN LANDSCAPE PSORIASIS)
BackgroundGuselkumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody that binds selectively to the p19 subunit of interleukin-23, which has shown efficacy in patients with previous incomplete response to ustekinumab in the NAVIGATE clinical trial. ObjectivesWe conducted a 104-week multicenter retrospective study to assess the effectiveness and safety of guselkumab in patients affected by plaque psoriasis with an inadequate response to ustekinumab in a real-life setting. MethodsOur retrospective study included 233 adults affected by moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, enrolled in 14 different Italian centres, and treated with guselkumab after failing therapy with ustekinumab. Patient characteristics and PASI (Psoriasis Area and Severity Index) score at each visit (baseline, weeks 16, 52 and 104) were recorded. The percentages of patients achieving 75%, 90% and 100% (PASI 75, PASI 90 and PASI 100) improvement in PASI, compared with baseline, were registered. ResultsAt week 52, PASI 75 was reached by 89.88% of patients, PASI 90 by 71.43%, PASI 100 by 58.83% and absolute PASI <= 2 by 90.48%. At week 104, similar effectiveness results were observed. Compared to the NAVIGATE trial, we observed higher rates of PASI 75/90/100. Patients with the involvement of difficult-to-treat areas were significantly less likely to achieve PASI90 and PASI100 at week 16. Obese patients had significantly lower rates of PASI75 and PASI <= 2 at week 52. At week 104, comparable responses were observed among all patients' subgroups, regardless of BMI status, involvement of difficult-to-treat areas, presence of cardiometabolic comorbidities and concomitant psoriatic arthritis. No significant safety findings were reported throughout the study. ConclusionOur data suggest that the efficacy of guselkumab in patients with inadequate response to ustekinumab for plaque psoriasis in 'real-life' clinical practice is comparable with NAVIGATE study with higher percentages of patients achieving PASI90 and PASI100 at weeks 16, 52 and 104
Long-Term Persistence Rate of Secukinumab in Psoriatic Patients: A Six-Year Multicenter, Real-World Experience, Retrospective Study
background: psoriatic disease, a chronic immune-mediated systemic inflammatory condition, significantly impairs patients' quality of life. the advent of highly targeted biological therapies has transformed treatment strategies, emphasizing the importance of selecting the most effective and cost-efficient option. secukinumab, an IL-17A inhibitor, has demonstrated efficacy and safety in treating moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis (PsO). however, long-term real-world data on its effectiveness and persistence rate are limited. methods: this retrospective study, conducted across eight Italian dermatology centers, aimed to evaluate the 6-year persistence rate and effectiveness of secukinumab in patients with PsO. additionally, the study investigated the onset of psoriatic arthritis during treatment. results: overall, 166 adult patients were analyzed. their median age was 53.9 years. the mean BMI was 26.5. Of the 166 patients, 64 were bio-experienced while 102 were bio-na & iuml;ve. a progressive reduction in PsO severity measured by PASI scores over 6 years of treatment was revealed: the PASI score decreased from a baseline value of 18.1 (+/- 9.1) to 0.7 (+/- 1.6) after 6 years of follow-up. adverse events, including mucocutaneous fungal infections and cardiovascular disturbances, were reported in 19.9% of patients. the persistence rate was 86.8% at 24 months, decreasing to 66.4% at 72 months. psoriatic arthritis onset during treatment was observed in 15 (9.0%) of patients. conclusions: this study highlights the sustained effectiveness and favorable safety profile of secukinumab over 6 years, providing valuable real-world evidence. understanding the long-term persistence rate and predictors of discontinuation could help clinicians optimize treatment decisions and improve patient outcomes in PsO management. we found that the absence of scalp PsO, no involvement of the genital area and normal weight were the best factors of persistence in secukinumab treatment in the long term
The Role of Expectations in the Provision of Public Goods Under the Influence of Social Identity
Individuals who share a common identity show persistently elevated contributions to public goods. Yet, so far the factors that actually trigger this welfare enhancement are not precisely understood. We investigate two channels: (1) subjects' expectations on group members' cooperativeness and (2) the degree to which they reciprocate these expectations by own contributions' i.e. their conditional cooperation. To this purpose we induce identity in the lab and implement an in-group, out-group and partner matching protocol in a ten-period public good game. Our results yield that comparatively higher expectations on in-group than on outgroup members' cooperativeness are the main driver for welfare enhancements in identity homogeneous groups. The degree of conditional cooperation is, however, similar in all matching protocols. Merely individuals initially identified as free-riders seem to reciprocate a limited range of expectations by higher own contributions when matched with in-group than with out-group members. Nevertheless, our findings clearly underline the paramount importance of expectations in determining cooperation under social identity
