Bootstrapping Newton Gravity
A non-linear equation obtained by adding gravitational self-interaction terms
to the Poisson equation for Newtonian gravity is here employed in order to
analyse a static spherically sym- metric homogeneous compact source of given
proper mass and radius and the outer vacuum. The main feature of this picture
is that, although the freedom of shifting the potential by an ar- bitrary
constant is of course lost, the solutions remain qualitatively very close to
the Newtonian behaviour. We also notice that the negative gravitational
potential energy is smaller than the proper mass for sources with small
compactness, but for sources that should form black holes according to General
Relativity, the gravitational potential energy becomes of the same order of
magnitude of the proper mass, or even larger. Moreover, the pressure overcomes
the energy density for large values of the compactness, but it remains finite
for finite compactness, hence there exists no Buchdahl limit. This classical
description is meant to serve as the starting point for investigating quantum
features of (near) black hole configurations within the corpuscular picture of

Quantum Statistical Mechanics for Nonextensive Systems II
In this paper, the Green function theory of quantum many-particle systems
recently presented is reworked within the framework of nonextensive statistical
mechanics with a new normalized -expectation values. This reformulation
introduces a renormalization of temperature of the earlier theory and a
self-consistency condition. The linear response theory is also presented, along
with its two-particle Green function version. Finally, a Boltzmann

Symbolic Sequences and Tsallis Entropy
We address this work to investigate symbolic sequences with long-range
correlations by using computational simulation. We analyze sequences with two,
three and four symbols that could be repeated times, with the probability
distribution . For these sequences, we verified that
the usual entropy increases more slowly when the symbols are correlated and the
Tsallis entropy exhibits, for a suitable choice of , a linear behavior. We
also study the chain as a random walk-like process and observe a nonusual

Investigation of the existence of hybrid stars using Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models
We investigate the hadron-quark phase transition inside neutron stars and
obtain mass-radius relations for hybrid stars. The equation of state for the
quark phase using the standard NJL model is too soft leading to an unstable
star and suggesting a modification of the NJL model by introducing a momentum
cutoff dependent on the chemical potential. However, even in this approach, the
instability remains. In order to remedy the instability we suggest the
introduction of a vector coupling in the NJL model, which makes the EoS
stiffer, reducing the instability. We conclude that the possible existence of
quark matter inside the stars require high densities, leading to very compact

Exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls and hexachlorobenzene, semen quality and testicular cancer risk
PURPOSE: We carried out a case-control study to investigate the possible role of occupational and environmental exposure to endocrine disruptors in the onset of testicular cancer (TC).
METHODS: We evaluated 125 TC patients and 103 controls. Seminal fluid examination and organochlorine analysis were performed in all subjects. Cases and controls were also interviewed using a structured questionnaire to collect demographic information, residence, andrological medical history and dietary information.
RESULTS: We found that a higher level of reproductive tract birth defects was associated with a higher risk of TC. With regard to diet, cases reported a higher consumption of milk and dairy products than controls. Overall, there was a statistically significant increase in TC risk in cases with detectable values of total polychlorinated organic compounds against controls (14.4 vs. 1.0 %; p < 0.001). TC patients with detectable levels of organochlorines had lower mean semen parameters than those with undetectable levels, although this difference was not statistically significant.
CONCLUSION: The International Agency for Research on Cancer recently included dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in Group 1 of known human carcinogens. Our study confirmed and identified various risk factors for testicular cancer: cryptorchidism, consumption of milk and dairy products, parents' occupation and serum concentration of hexachlorobenzene and PCBs and, for the first time, we showed the correlation between semen quality and the serum concentration of these pollutants
Compact stars with a quark core within NJL model
An ultraviolet cutoff dependent on the chemical potential as proposed by
Casalbuoni {\it et al} is used in the su(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The model
is applied to the description of stellar quark matter and compact stars. It is
shown that with a new cutoff parametrization it is possible to obtain stable
hybrid stars with a quark core. A larger cutoff at finite densities leads to a
partial chiral symmetry restoration of quark at lower densities. A direct
consequence is the onset of the quark in stellar matter at lower densities
and a softening of the equation of state.Comment: 9 pages, 12 figure
High serum osteopontin levels are associated with prevalent fractures and worse lipid profile in post-menopausal women with type 2 diabetes
Purpose: Patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) have increased fracture risk. Osteopontin (OPN) is a protein involved in bone remodeling and inflammation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of OPN with fracture prevalence and with metabolic parameters in post-menopausal women with T2DM. Methods: Sixty-four post-menopausal women with T2DM (age 67.0 ± 7.8 years, diabetes duration 8.9 ± 6.7 years), enrolled in a previous study, were followed up (3.6 ± 0.9 years). Previous fragility fractures were recorded. The FRAX score (without BMD) was calculated and biochemical parameters (plasma glucose, HbA1c, lipid profile and renal function) were assessed. Serum 25OH-vitamin D, calcium, PTH and OPN were evaluated at baseline. The association between OPN and fracture prevalence at baseline was evaluated by a logistic model. Results: OPN levels were higher in patients with previous fractures (n.25) than in patients without previous fractures at baseline (n.39) (p = 0.006). The odds of having fractures at baseline increased by 6.7 (1.9–31.4, 95% CI, p = 0.007) for each increase of 1 ng/ml in OPN levels, after adjustment for vitamin D and HbA1c levels. Fracture incidence was 4.7%. Higher OPN associated with a decrease in HDL-cholesterol (p = 0.048), after adjustment for age, basal HDL-cholesterol, basal and follow-up HbA1c and follow-up duration. 25OH-vitamin D associated with an increase in FRAX-estimated probability of hip fracture at follow-up (p = 0.029), after adjustment for age, 25OH-vitamin D and time. Conclusions: In post-menopausal women with T2DM, OPN might be a useful marker of fracture and worse lipid profile
