    Sex differences in zonulin in affective disorders and associations with current mood symptoms

    Zonulin measurement was funded by Institut Allergosan (Graz, Austria).Introduction: The bidirectional connection between the brain and the gut within psychiatric entities has gained increasing scientific attention over the last years. As a regulator of intestinal permeability, zonulin acts as a key player on the interface of this interplay. Like several psychiatric disorders, intestinal permeability was associated with inflammation in previous findings. Methods: In this study we explored differences in zonulin serum levels in currently depressed (n = 55) versus currently euthymic (n = 37) individuals with an affective disorder. Further, we explored sex differences and possible influences on zonulin and affective symptoms like medication, age, body mass index, and smoking status. Results: Serum zonulin was significantly higher in females than in men independent from affective status (z = -2.412, p = .016). More specifically, females in the euthymic subgroup had higher zonulin levels than euthymic men (z = -2.114, p = .035). There was no difference in zonulin serum levels in individuals taking or not taking a specific psychopharmacotherapy. We found no correlation between zonulin serum levels and depression severity. Discussion: Increased serum zonulin levels as a proxy for increased intestinal permeability in women may indicate a state of elevated susceptibility for depression-inducing stimuli.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Influence of very low doses of mediators on fungal laccase activity - nonlinearity beyond imagination

    Laccase, an enzyme responsible for aerobic transformations of natural phenolics, in industrial applications requires the presence of low-molecular substances known as mediators, which accelerate oxidation processes. However, the use of mediators is limited by their toxicity and the high costs of exploitation. The activation of extracellular laccase in growing fungal culture with highly diluted mediators, ABTS and HBT is described. Two high laccase-producing fungal strains, Trametes versicolor and Cerrena unicolor, were used in this study as a source of enzyme. Selected dilutions of the mediators significantly increased the activity of extracellular laccase during 14 days of cultivation what was distinctly visible in PAGE technique and in colorimetric tests. The same mediator dilutions increased demethylation properties of laccase, which was demonstrated during incubation of enzyme with veratric acid. It was established that the activation effect was assigned to specific dilutions of mediators. Our dose-response dilution process smoothly passes into the range of action of homeopathic dilutions and is of interest for homeopaths

    Insight from the draft genome of Dietzia cinnamea P4 reveals mechanisms of survival in complex tropical soil habitats and biotechnology potential

    The draft genome of Dietzia cinnamea strain P4 was determined using pyrosequencing. In total, 428 supercontigs were obtained and analyzed. We here describe and interpret the main features of the draft genome. The genome contained a total of 3,555,295 bp, arranged in a single replicon with an average G+C percentage of 70.9%. It revealed the presence of complete pathways for basically all central metabolic routes. Also present were complete sets of genes for the glyoxalate and reductive carboxylate cycles. Autotrophic growth was suggested to occur by the presence of genes for aerobic CO oxidation, formate/formaldehyde oxidation, the reverse tricarboxylic acid cycle and the 3-hydropropionate cycle for CO2 fixation. Secondary metabolism was evidenced by the presence of genes for the biosynthesis of terpene compounds, frenolicin, nanaomycin and avilamycin A antibiotics. Furthermore, a probable role in azinomycin B synthesis, an important product with antitumor activity, was indicated. The complete alk operon for the degradation of n-alkanes was found to be present, as were clusters of genes for biphenyl ring dihydroxylation.     Variations in seasonal solar insolation are associated with a history of suicide attempts in bipolar I disorder

    Background: Bipolar disorder is associated with circadian disruption and a high risk of suicidal behavior. In a previous exploratory study of patients with bipolar I disorder, we found that a history of suicide attempts was associated with differences between winter and summer levels of solar insolation. The purpose of this study was to confirm this finding using international data from 42% more collection sites and 25% more countries. Methods: Data analyzed were from 71 prior and new collection sites in 40 countries at a wide range of latitudes. The analysis included 4876 patients with bipolar I disorder, 45% more data than previously analyzed. Of the patients, 1496 (30.7%) had a history of suicide attempt. Solar insolation data, the amount of the sun’s electromagnetic energy striking the surface of the earth, was obtained for each onset location (479 locations in 64 countries). Results: This analysis confirmed the results of the exploratory study with the same best model and slightly better statistical significance. There was a significant inverse association between a history of suicide attempts and the ratio of mean winter insolation to mean summer insolation (mean winter insolation/mean summer insolation). This ratio is largest near the equator which has little change in solar insolation over the year, and smallest near the poles where the winter insolation is very small compared to the summer insolation. Other variables in the model associated with an increased risk of suicide attempts were a history of alcohol or substance abuse, female gender, and younger birth cohort. The winter/summer insolation ratio was also replaced with the ratio of minimum mean monthly insolation to the maximum mean monthly insolation to accommodate insolation patterns in the tropics, and nearly identical results were found. All estimated coefficients were significant at p < 0.01. Conclusion: A large change in solar insolation, both between winter and summer and between the minimum and maximum monthly values, may increase the risk of suicide attempts in bipolar I disorder. With frequent circadian rhythm dysfunction and suicidal behavior in bipolar disorder, greater understanding of the optimal roles of daylight and electric lighting in circadian entrainment is needed

    Exploratory study of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation and age of onset of bipolar disorder

    Background: Sunlight contains ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation that triggers the production of vitamin D by skin. Vitamin D has widespread effects on brain function in both developing and adult brains. However, many people live at latitudes (about > 40 N or S) that do not receive enough UVB in winter to produce vitamin D. This exploratory study investigated the association between the age of onset of bipolar I disorder and the threshold for UVB sufficient for vitamin D production in a large global sample. Methods: Data for 6972 patients with bipolar I disorder were obtained at 75 collection sites in 41 countries in both hemispheres. The best model to assess the relation between the threshold for UVB sufficient for vitamin D production and age of onset included 1 or more months below the threshold, family history of mood disorders, and birth cohort. All coefficients estimated at P ≤ 0.001. Results: The 6972 patients had an onset in 582 locations in 70 countries, with a mean age of onset of 25.6 years. Of the onset locations, 34.0% had at least 1 month below the threshold for UVB sufficient for vitamin D production. The age of onset at locations with 1 or more months of less than or equal to the threshold for UVB was 1.66 years younger. Conclusion: UVB and vitamin D may have an important influence on the development of bipolar disorder. Study limitations included a lack of data on patient vitamin D levels, lifestyles, or supplement use. More study of the impacts of UVB and vitamin D in bipolar disorder is needed to evaluate this supposition

    Guilds in the transition to modernity: the cases of Germany, United Kingdom, and the Netherlands

    One important aspect of the transition to modernity is the survival of elements of the Old Regime beyond the French Revolution. It has been claimed that this can explain why in the late 19th and early 20th centuries some Western countries adopted national corporatist structures while others transformed into liberal market economies. One of those elements is the persistence or absence of guild traditions. This is usually analyzed in a national context. This paper aims to contribute to the debate by investigating the development of separate trades in Germany, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands throughout the 19th century. We distinguish six scenarios of what might have happened to crafts and investigate how the prevalence of each of these scenarios in the three countries impacted on the emerging national political economies. By focusing on trades, rather than on the national political economy, our analysis demonstrates that in each country the formation of national political economies and citizenship rights was not the result of a national pattern of guild survival. Rather, the pattern that emerged by the end of the 19th century was determined by the balance between old and new industries, and between national and regional or local government

    Fine-mapping genomic loci refines bipolar disorder risk genes

    Bipolar disorder (BD) is a heritable mental illness with complex etiology. While the largest published genome-wide association study identified 64 BD risk loci, the causal SNPs and genes within these loci remain unknown. We applied a suite of statistical and functional fine-mapping methods to these loci, and prioritized 22 likely causal SNPs for BD. We mapped these SNPs to genes, and investigated their likely functional consequences by integrating variant annotations, brain cell-type epigenomic annotations, brain quantitative trait loci, and results from rare variant exome sequencing in BD. Convergent lines of evidence supported the roles of SCN2A, TRANK1, DCLK3, INSYN2B, SYNE1, THSD7A, CACNA1B, TUBBP5, PLCB3, PRDX5, KCNK4, AP001453.3, TRPT1, FKBP2, DNAJC4, RASGRP1, FURIN, FES, YWHAE, DPH1, GSDMB, MED24, THRA, EEF1A2, and KCNQ2 in BD. These represent promising candidates for functional experiments to understand biological mechanisms and therapeutic potential. Additionally, we demonstrated that fine-mapping effect sizes can improve performance and transferability of BD polygenic risk scores across ancestrally diverse populations, and present a high-throughput fine-mapping pipeline (https://github.com/mkoromina/SAFFARI)

    Paradigms in Qualitative IB Research:Trends, Analysis and Recommendations

    This paper examines trends, challenges, and opportunities for qualitative IB research. We examine how the reliance on positivism has influenced the use of alternative paradigms (e.g., social constructivism, critical realism and interpretivism) and, consequently, the use of qualitative methods. Using mixed methods to collect and analyze data on qualitative articles published in International Business Review, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World Business, and Management International Review, we examine differences between the dominant positivist paradigm and the alternative ones and use comparative content analysis to investigate how alternative paradigm papers are conceptualized and presented. Moreover, we interview authors who used alternative paradigms to gain an in-depth understanding of the challenges and opportunities they faced when conducting research using alternative paradigms. We argue that alternative paradigms can help IB innovate and generate groundbreaking research while providing social impact, managerial and practical relevance, and promoting diversity. We, therefore, encourage paradigmatic diversity and awareness. Lastly, we provide prescriptions for IB scholars to understand methodology and examine complex IB phenomena vis-a-vis paradigmatic diversity

    Structure and function of a second gene cluster encoding the formate dehydrogenase of Wolinella succinogenes.

    Wolinella succinogenes contains a single formate dehydrogenase, but two gene loci (fdhI and fdhII) code for the subunits of the enzyme. The nucleotide sequence of fdhII is almost identical with that of fdhI in the region comprising fdhEABCD. The sequences of fdhI and fdhII differ in the promotor regions upstream of fdhE. Deletion mutants lacking either fdhI or fdhII synthesize functional formate dehydrogenases, as shown by growth with formate as electron donor and either fumarate or polysulfide as acceptor substrates, and by the presence of the FdhA subunit and of enzyme activity. In the wild-type strain, the fdhI genes appear to be expressed preferentially during growth with formate and fumarate. The six-times greater amount of the enzyme present upon growth with formate and polysulfide is due to the expression of both fdhI and fdhII. The transcription start sites were located 196-bp and 129-bp upstream of the fdhE start codons of fdhI and fdhII, respectively. An apparently single transcript (5.6 kbp) was detected in polysulfide-grown W. succinogenes by Northern-blot analysis, suggesting that the five open reading frames form operons

    Competitiveness of Turkey in organic exports to the European Union market

    WOS: 000327092000007The exports of organically produced agricultural products in Turkey have been rapidly growing, particularly in response to an increasing demand for organic products in European Union countries. The common view and findings of research in organic trade in Turkey confirm that the European market is expanding. There is a missing focus in the prevailing research on this issue. None of the studies have focused on modelling the exports market for organic products in order to estimate price and income elasticities for these goods; this would enable an analysis of the issue for the derivation of policy implications. Another related missing focus in the present research literature is the lack of understanding of the current competitiveness of Turkish exports in the European Union market and the sources of this competitiveness. The paper has three major objectives and, thus, seeks to produce three outputs: The first objective is to explore Turkey's export competitiveness in organic products in the European Union market. In order to fulfill this objective, we will estimate the indices measuring competitiveness of Turkish organic products. The second objective is to uncover the components of export performance. Through constant market share analysis, we seek to determine the key factors underlying the growth or Turkish organic exports. Finally, the third objective is to estimate an export demand model for these products in the European Union market. Thus, it will be possible to estimate price and income elasticities of demand as well as make projections. The study reveals that export demand for Turkish organic products in European Union market is growing, and exports to the European Union market are sensitive to the price and income changes of the target countries. Turkey has a clear comparative advantage versus the competitor EU countries in selected products. Competitiveness, in particularly, relies on relative prices, and thus, does not suggest any sustainability
