    Pseudo-contact angle due to superfluid vortices in 4^{4}He

    We have investigated spreading of superfluid 4^{4}He on top of polished MgF2_2 and evaporated SiO2_{2} substrates. Our results show strongly varying contact angles of 0 - 15 mrad on the evaporated layers. According to our theoretical calculations, these contact angles can be explained by a spatially varying distribution of vortex lines, the unpinning velocity of which is inversely proportional to the liquid depth.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    The Use of the "Preclosure” Technique for Antegrade Aspiration Thrombectomy with Large Catheters in Acute Limb Ischemia

    Purpose: This study was designed to assess retrospectively short- and mid-term outcomes of the use of a suture-mediated closure device to close the antegrade access in patients undergoing percutaneous aspiration thrombectomy with large catheters for acute leg ischemia. Methods: Between November 2005 and February 2010, a suture-mediated active closure system (ProGlide® 6F, Abbott) was placed before arterial sheath (mean 9F, range 6-12F) introduction in 101 patients (74 men, 73%, mean age 70.1±12.6years standard deviation). Data regarding mortality, complications, and factors contributing to vascular complications at the access site was collected for 6month after the intervention to detect device-related problems. As a coincidence, 77 patients had follow-up visits for a duplex ultrasound. Results: There were a total of 19 vascular complications (19%) at the puncture site, all of which were of hemorrhagic nature and none of which consisted of vessel occlusion. Two major outcome complications (2%) occurred. A retroperitoneal hematoma and a serious inguinal bleeding required additive treatment and did not result in permanent sequelae. Nine cases involved death of which eight were not attributable to the closure and one remained unclear. Successful closure was achieved in 95 patients (94%); additional manual compression was sufficient in the majority of the remaining patients. Numerous factors contributing to vascular complications were encountered. Conclusions: With acceptable short- and mid-term outcomes, the "preclose” technique can be a reliable option for the closure of a large antegrade femoral access even for patients at a high risk of vascular complications, such as those undergoing aspiration thrombectom

    High fidelity pressure measurements in the zero temperature limit provide a unique opportunity to study the behavior of strongly interacting, itinerant electrons with coupled spin and charge degrees of freedom. Approaching the exactitude that has become the hallmark of experiments on classical critical phenomena, we characterize the quantum critical behavior of the model, elemental antiferromagnet chromium, lightly doped with vanadium. We resolve the sharp doubling of the Hall coefficient at the quantum critical point and trace the dominating effects of quantum fluctuations up to surprisingly high temperatures.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Nuclear myocardial perfusion imaging with a cadmium-zinc-telluride detector technique: optimized protocol for scan time reduction

    We aimed at establishing the optimal scan time for nuclear myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) on an ultrafast cardiac gamma-camera using a novel cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) solid-state detector technology. METHODS: Twenty patients (17 male; BMI range, 21.7-35.5 kg/m(2)) underwent 1-d (99m)Tc-tetrofosmin adenosine stress and rest MPI protocols, each with a 15-min acquisition on a standard dual-detector SPECT camera. All scans were immediately repeated on an ultrafast CZT camera over a 6-min acquisition time and reconstructed from list-mode raw data to obtain scan durations of 1 min, 2 min, etc., up to a maximum of 6 min. For each of the scan durations, the segmental tracer uptake value (percentage of maximum myocardial uptake) from the CZT camera was compared by intraclass correlation with standard SPECT camera data using a 20-segment model, and clinical agreement was assessed per coronary territory. Scan durations above which no further relevant improvement in uptake correlation was found were defined as minimal required scan times, for which Bland-Altman limits of agreement were calculated. RESULTS: Minimal required scan times were 3 min for low dose (r = 0.81; P < 0.001; Bland-Altman, -11.4% to 12.2%) and 2 min for high dose (r = 0.80; P < 0.001; Bland-Altman, -7.6% to 12.9%), yielding a clinical agreement of 95% and 97%, respectively. CONCLUSION: We have established the minimal scan time for a CZT solid-state detector system, which allows 1-d stress/rest MPI with a substantially reduced acquisition time resulting in excellent agreement with regard to uptake and clinical findings, compared with MPI from a standard dual-head SPECT gamma-camera

    The Education Track PhD Program in Anatomy at Indiana University School of Medicine: A Decade Producing Anatomy Educator-Scholars

    In 2008, the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) admitted its first student to a newly approved PhD program focusing on anatomical education rather than biomedical research. The goal of the Education Track PhD program is twofold: (1) to provide students with extensive training in all of the anatomical sub-disciplines coupled with sufficient teaching experience to be fully prepared to assume major educational responsibilities upon graduation and (2) to train students to conduct rigorous, medical education research and other educational scholarship necessary for promotion and tenure. The 90-credit hour curriculum includes coursework in anatomy and other biomedical subjects, education, statistics, and electives. For their dissertation work, the students complete a research project about some aspect of medical education. As of December 2017, the Education Track program had admitted 23 students and produced 10 graduates. Two more students are anticipated to graduate by June 2018. All of the graduates were offered faculty appointments (8 tenure track and 2 nontenure track) immediately upon graduation at major universities and medical schools. Four of the graduates were offered positions at IUSM. Eight graduates have appointments in medical school anatomy departments, 1 in a physical therapy department, and 1 in a physician assistant department. None of the graduates have been in their faculty positions long enough yet to have achieved tenure. During the period from 2009 through 2017, the students and graduates of the program gave 84 conference presentations and authored 47 peer-reviewed publications about anatomy or other aspects of medical education. Thus, in the 10 years since its inception, the Education Track program has successfully produced a small but stable supply of doctoral-level anatomy educator-scholars for a growing academic market.American Association for Anatomy Spring Meetin

    Linear magnetoresistance in commercial n-type silicon due to inhomogeneous doping

    Free electron theory tells us that resistivity is independent of magnetic field. In fact, most observations match the semiclassical prediction of a magnetoresistance that is quadratic at low fields before saturating. However, a non-saturating linear magnetoresistance has been observed in exotic semiconductors such as silver chalcogenides, lightly-doped InSb, N-doped InAs, MnAs-GaAs composites, PrFeAsO, and epitaxial graphene. Here we report the observation of a large linear magnetoresistance in the ohmic regime in commonplace commercial n-type silicon wafer. It is well-described by a classical model of spatially fluctuating donor densities, and may be amplified by altering the aspect ratio of the sample to enhance current-jetting: increasing the width tenfold increased the magnetoresistance at 8 T from 445 % to 4707 % at 35 K. This physical picture may well offer insights into the large magnetoresistances recently observed in n-type and p-type Si in the non-ohmic regime.Comment: submitted to Nature Material

    Metal-insulator Crossover Behavior at the Surface of NiS_2

    We have performed a detailed high-resolution electron spectroscopic investigation of NiS2_2 and related Se-substituted compounds NiS2x_{2-x}Sex_x, which are known to be gapped insulators in the bulk at all temperatures. A large spectral weight at the Fermi energy of the room temperature spectrum, in conjunction with the extreme surface sensitivity of the experimental probe, however, suggests that the surface layer is metallic at 300 K. Interestingly, the evolution of the spectral function with decreasing temperature is characterized by a continuous depletion of the single-particle spectral weight at the Fermi energy and the development of a gap-like structure below a characteristic temperature, providing evidence for a metal-insulator crossover behavior at the surfaces of NiS2_2 and of related compounds. These results provide a consistent description of the unusual transport properties observed in these systems.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

    Carotid Artery Stenting: A Single Center “Real World” Experience

    BACKGROUND:Percutaneous carotid artery stenting (CAS) became a widely used procedure in patients with symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis. However its role compared to carotid endarterectomy (CAD) remains questioned. We analysed the safety of carotid artery stenting program of a prospective CAS register program of a tertiary teaching hospital. METHOD:Between July 2003 and December 2010, 208 patients underwent CAS procedure. Baseline, procedural and follow-up data were prospectively collected. Primary peri-interventional outcome was defined as 30-day major adverse events (MAE), including death, stroke or myocardial infarction, and mid- to long-term follow-up outcome included ipsilateral stroke, myocardial infarction or death. Secondary outcome was restenosis rate ≥ 50% per lesion. RESULTS:Unilateral carotid artery interventions were performed in 186 patients. In 22 patients CAS was performed bilaterally as stages procedures. The 30-day MAE rate was 1.9% consisting of two contralateral strokes and two ipsilateral stroke. Mean clinically follow-up was 22 months. Mid- to long-term MAE was 8.1% with 6.3% (n = 13) deaths, 1.9% (n = 4) myocardial infarctions and 0.9% (n = 2) ipsilateral stroke. The restenosis rate ≥ 50% per lesion was 4.3% at a mean follow-up of 22 months. Target lesion revascularization was performed in one patient, because of restenosis at 9 months follow-up after first CAS. CONCLUSION:Implementation of a carotid artery stenting program at a tertiary, teaching hospital is a safe method for treatment of carotid artery stenosis.     Scaling of the Conductivity with Temperature and Uniaxial Stress in Si:B at the Metal-Insulator Transition

    Using uniaxial stress to tune Si:B through the metal-insulator transition we find the conductivity at low temperatures shows an excellent fit to scaling with temperature and stress on both sides of the transition. The scaling functions yield the conductivity in the metallic and insulating phases, and allow a reliable determination of the temperature dependence in the critical regions on both sides of the transition
