    The effect of habitat composition on sexual conflict in the seaweed flies Coelopa frigida and C. pilipes

    Despite the recent explosion of interest in sexual conflict, the effect of environmental conditions on the intensity of sexual conflict within populations has been largely ignored. Reproductive encounters within coelopids are characterized by sexual conflict in the form of intense harassment by males, usually resulting in a vigorous premating struggle. We investigated the effect of habitat composition and duration of exposure to oviposition sites on the level of sexual harassment by males and mating success in two species of European seaweed flies, Coelopa frigida and C. pilipes. The wrack beds inhabited by these two species are dominated by two genera of brown algae, Fucus and Laminaria, the relative proportions of which can vary considerably between wrack beds. Fucus is known to stimulate harassment by males, increase copulation duration and induce females to oviposit in both species. In this study Laminaria stimulated a higher level of harassment by male C. frigida than Fucus did. However, a similar effect was not observed in C. pilipes, with the main additional factor affecting harassment in this species being the age of the male. Our study highlights the potential importance of environmental conditions on the intensity of sexual conflict within a population. We discuss the evolutionary significance of these observed effects in seaweed flies

    Female Sexual Polymorphism and Fecundity Consequences of Male Mating Harassment in the Wild

    Genetic and phenotypic variation in female response towards male mating attempts has been found in several laboratory studies, demonstrating sexually antagonistic co-evolution driven by mating costs on female fitness. Theoretical models suggest that the type and degree of genetic variation in female resistance could affect the evolutionary outcome of sexually antagonistic mating interactions, resulting in either rapid development of reproductive isolation and speciation or genetic clustering and female sexual polymorphisms. However, evidence for genetic variation of this kind in natural populations of non-model organisms is very limited. Likewise, we lack knowledge on female fecundity-consequences of matings and the degree of male mating harassment in natural settings. Here we present such data from natural populations of a colour polymorphic damselfly. Using a novel experimental technique of colour dusting males in the field, we show that heritable female colour morphs differ in their propensity to accept male mating attempts. These morphs also differ in their degree of resistance towards male mating attempts, the number of realized matings and in their fecundity-tolerance to matings and mating attempts. These results show that there may be genetic variation in both resistance and tolerance to male mating attempts (fitness consequences of matings) in natural populations, similar to the situation in plant-pathogen resistance systems. Male mating harassment could promote the maintenance of a sexual mating polymorphism in females, one of few empirical examples of sympatric genetic clusters maintained by sexual conflict

    Minor psychiatric disorders among Brazilian ragpickers: a cross-sectional study

    BACKGROUND: Ragpickers are informal workers who collect recyclable materials to earn a small wage. Their life and working conditions are extremely difficult. We examined minor psychiatric disorders (MPD) among a cohort of ragpickers in Pelotas, a city in southern Brazil. METHODS: Ragpickers were matched by sex, age, and years of schooling with a sample of non-ragpickers from the same poor neighborhoods. The cross-sectional study gathered data by interview on 990 individuals in 2004. MPD were assessed using a standard self-reporting questionnaire, the SRQ-20. RESULTS: The prevalence of MPD among ragpickers was 44.7%, higher than reported by neighborhood controls (33.6%; p < 0.001). MPD were more common among females, those of lower economic level, smokers and alcoholics. Among occupational characteristics, MPD prevalence was associated with frequent static postures, low job satisfaction and recent work accidents. CONCLUSION: Ragpickers more frequently report MPD than other poor workers living in the same neighborhoods, with many of the same life conditions. Improving the work lives of these precarious workers should address not only the physical hazards of their jobs but their mental and emotional health as well

    Priority versus brute force: When should males begin guarding resources?

    When should males begin guarding a resource when both resources and guarders vary in quality? This general problem applies, for example, to migrant birds occupying territories in the spring and to precopula in crustaceans where males grab females before they molt and become receptive. Previous work has produced conflicting predictions. Theory on migrant birds predicts that the strongest competitors should often arrive first, whereas some models of mate guarding have predicted that the strongest competitors wait and then simply usurp a female from a weaker competitor. We build a general model of resource guarding that allows varying the ease with which takeovers occur. The model is phrased in terms of mate-guarding crustaceans, but the same logic can be applied to other forms of resource acquisition where priority plays a role but takeovers might be possible too. The race to secure breeding positions can lead to strong competitors (large males) taking females earliest, even though this means accepting a lower-quality female. Paradoxically, this means that small males, which have fewer breeding opportunities, are more choosy than larger ones. Such solutions are found when takeovers are impossible. The easier the takeovers and the higher the rate of finding guarded resources, the more likely are solutions where guarding durations are short, where strong competitors begin guarding only just before breeding, and where they do this by usurping the resource. The relationship between an individual's competitive ability and its timing of resource acquisition can also be nonlinear if takeovers are moderately common; if this is the case, then males of intermediate size guard the longest

    Dynamics of the caring family

    When several individuals simultaneously provide for offspring, as in families, the effort of any one individual will depend on the efforts of the other family members. This conflict of interest among family members is made more complicated by their relatedness because relatives share genetic interest to some degree. The conflict resolution will also be influenced by the differences in reproductive value between breeders and helpers. Here, we calculate evolutionarily stable provisioning efforts in families with up to two helpers. We explicitly consider that the behavioral choices are made in a life-history context, and we also consider how group sizes change dynamically; this affects, for example, average relatedness among group members. We assume two different scenarios: intact families in which the breeder is 100% monogamous and stepfamilies in which the breeder shifts mate between breeding events. The average relatedness among family members is allowed to evolve in concert with changes in provisioning effort. Our model shows that an individual's provisioning effort is not easy to predict from either its relatedness to the offspring or its reproductive value. Instead, it is necessary to consider the inclusive fitness effect of provisioning, which is determined by a combination of relatedness, reproductive value, and the reproductive value of the offspring

    Experimental evidence for low intra-pair cache pilfering rates in European nuthatches

    European nuthatches, Sitta europaea, live all year in permanent pair-territories. In winter, hoarded food is an important food source. To measure the rate of cache pilfering within pairs, each member of six pairs was supplied with either white- or dark-shelled sunflower seeds which the birds cached. When each bird had cached some 100-300 seeds, the feeder was removed and the birds were monitored during their normal foraging. For each sunflower seed that the nuthatches retrieved, the colour of the seed and the sex of the retrieving bird were recorded. In all pairs, each member almost exclusively retrieved seeds of the colour it had itself cached, pilfering amounting to less than 5%. As no clear differences in hoarding niches were detected between the sexes, these results suggest that caches were relocated with the aid of memory
