    Quantum Entanglement Initiated Super Raman Scattering

    It has now been possible to prepare chain of ions in an entangled state and thus question arises --- how the optical properties of a chain of entangled ions differ from say a chain of independent particles. We investigate nonlinear optical processes in such chains. We explicitly demonstrate the possibility of entanglement produced super Raman scattering. Our results in contrast to Dicke's work on superradiance are applicable to stimulated processes and are thus free from the standard complications of multimode quantum electrodynamics. Our results suggest the possibility of similar enhancement factors in other nonlinear processes like four wave mixing.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Early observations of the Afterglow of GRB000301c

    We report multiband observations of the Optical Transient (OT) associated with GRB000301c carried out between 2--4 March 2000 using the 2.34-m Vainu Bappu Telescope (VBT) at Kavalur, India. When combined with other reported data, the initial decline in the R-band magnitude with log (t−t0t-t_0), the time since the burst is fit with a slope α1\alpha_{1} = -0.70 ±\pm 0.07 which steepens after about 6.0 days to a slope of α2\alpha_{2} = -2.44 ±\pm 0.29. This change in slope does not occur smoothly but there is an indication for a bimodal distribution. The available measurements of the evolution of (B--R) color do not show any discernible evolution in the first 12 days.Comment: 14 pages, 2 postscript figures, Accepted for Publication in ApJ Letter

    Effects of rotation and magnetic field on the onset of convective instability in a liquid layer due to buoyancy and surface tension

    Thermocapillary stability characteristics of a horizontal liquid layer heated from below rotating about a vertical axis and subjected to a uniform vertical magnetic field are analyzed under a variety of thermal and electromagnetic boundary conditions. Results based on analytical solutions to the pertinent eigenvalue problems are discussed in the light of earlier work on special cases of the more general problem considered here to show in particular the effects of the heat transfer, nonzero curvature and gravity waves at the two-fluid interface. Although the expected stabilizing action of the Coriolis and Lorentz force fields in this configuration are in evidence the optimal choice of an appropriate range for the relevant parameters is shown to be critically dependent on the interfacial effects mentioned above

    An automatic procedure to extract galaxy clusters from CRoNaRio catalogs

    We present preliminary results of a simple peak finding algorithm applied to catalogues of galaxies, extracted from the Second Palomar Sky Survey in the framework of the CRoNaRio project. All previously known Abell and Zwicky clusters in a test region of 5x5 sq. deg. are recovered and new candidate clusters are also detected.     Evidence for <i>L</i>-dependence generated by channel coupling: <sup>16</sup>O scattering from <sup>12</sup>C at 115.9 MeV

    Background: In earlier work, inversion of S matrix for 330 MeV 16O on 12C resulted in highly undulatory potentials; the S matrix resulted from the inclusion of strong coupling to states of projectile and target nuclei. L-independent S-matrix equivalent potentials for other explicitly L-dependent potentials have been found to be undulatory. Purpose: To investigate the possible implications of the undulatory dynamic polarization potential for an underlying L dependence of the 16O on 12C optical potential. Methods: S matrix to potential, SL → V (r), inversion which yields local potentials that reproduce the elastic channel S matrix of coupled channel (CC) calculations, will be applied to the S matrix for 115.9 MeV 16O on 12C. Further, SL for explicitly L-dependent potentials are inverted and the resulting L-independent potentials are characterized and compared with the undulatory potentials found for 16O on 12C. Results: Some of the undulatory features exhibited by the potentials modified by channel coupling for 115.9 MeV 16O on 12C can be simulated by simple parameterized L-dependent potentials. Conclusions: The elastic scattering of 16O by 12C is a particularly favorable case for revealing the effective L dependence of the potential modified by channel coupling. Nevertheless, there is no reason to suppose that undularity is not a generic property leading in many cases to the choice: nucleus-nucleus potentials are (i) smooth and L-dependent, (ii) L-independent and undulatory, or (iii) both
