Fungal diversity associated to the olive moth, prays oleae Bernard : a survey for potential entomopathogenic fungi

Olive production is one of the main agricultural activities in Portugal. In the region of Trás-os-Montes this crop has been considerably affected by Prays oleae. In order to evaluate the diversity of fungi on P. oleae population of Trás-os-Montes olive orchards, larvae and pupae of the three annual generations (phyllophagous, antophagous and carpophagous) were collected and evaluated for fungal growth on their surface. From the 3828 larvae and pupae, a high percentage of individuals exhibited growth of a fungal agent (40.6%), particularly those from the phyllophagous generation. From all the moth generations, a total of 43 species from 24 genera were identified, but the diversity and abundance of fungal species differed between the three generations. Higher diversity was found in the carpophagous generation, followed by the antophagous and phyllophagous generations. The presence of fungi displaying entomopathogenic features was highest in the phyllophagous larvae and pupae, being B. bassiana the most abundant taxa. The first report of B. bassiana presence on P. oleae could open new strategies for the biocontrol of this major pest in olive groves, since the use of an already adapted species increases the guarantee of success of a biocontrol approach. The identification of antagonistic fungi able to control agents that cause major olive diseases, such as Verticillium dahliae, will benefit future biological control approaches for limiting this increasingly spreading pathogen. This work was supported by Science and Technology Foundation (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia – FCT) project PTDC/AGR-AAM/102600/2008 “Entomopathogenic fungi associated to olive pests: isolation, characterization and selection for biological control”. A high-fat high-sucrose diet affects the long-term metabolic fate of grape proanthocyanidins in rats

[Purpose]: Polyphenol metabolites are key mediators of the biological activities of polyphenols. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term effects of a high-fat high-sucrose (HFHS) diet on the metabolism of proanthocyanidins from grape seed extract (GSE). [Methods]: Adult female Wistar–Kyoto rats were fed a standard (STD) or HFHS diet supplemented or not with GSE for 16 weeks. PA metabolites were determined by targeted HPLC–MS/MS analysis. [Results]: A lower concentration of total microbial-derived PA metabolites was present in urine and the aqueous fraction of faeces in the HFHS + GSE group than in the STD + GSE group. In contrast, a tendency towards the formation of conjugated (epi)catechin metabolites in the HFHS + GSE group was observed. [Conclusions]: These results show that a HFHS diet significantly modifies PA metabolism, probably via: (1) a shift in microbial communities not counteracted by the polyphenols themselves; and (2) an up-regulation of hepatic enzymes. This research was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (Grants: AGL2009-12374-C03-01, -02 and -03; and AGL2013-49079-C2-1, 2 and -R, and through a doctoral fellowship to L.M.). In his migrated and almost dead blog, Chilean writer Alberto Fuguet announced the end of the format as a tool for writing and sharing personal thoughts. Ironically, he publishes this statement as a blog post entitled “¿ El fin de los blogs? El fin, al menos de é ste” (Is This the End of Blogs? It is the End, at Least of This One) (“Apuntes”). Such a post is supposed to be the closing-on-a-high-note gesture for a blog that started in 2005. By closing this door, Fuguet opens a new window through which he argues that blogs are dying due to the obsolescence of the format—based on plain writing—and to the impossibility of keeping up with the rapid development of newer and faster technologies (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, Instagram). In his opinion, we are still in a moment of “Images at War” (Gruzinski) where the interest of communicating through images becomes overwhelming in comparison with the strategies of transmission and communication employed by the well-known writing tradition. 1 However, the end of one cycle marks a new beginning that, in Fuguet’s case, is not as new as it could be: he decides to quit writing literary blogs and become a kind of independent film producer through a website committed to show, promote, distribute, and allow collaboration between independent filmmakers and the film-making community.
