    Work on the development of an improved 183 GHz subharmonic mixer was concentrated in two areas. First, there was an improved performance from current mixer body designs by testing different diodes and varying the whisker lengths. Second, there is the design of a new body structure. The whisker and diode pinsare in the same piece of the mixer that holds the substrate, reducing any motion of the parts that form the ohmic contacts of the diodes circuit. The broadband, low loss, quasi-optical diplexer, which is designed for use with a single ended mixer, has been developed. It uses a Gaussian beam waveguide as its transmission medium. The difference between the diplexer and other diplexers is the use of a Fabry Perot parallel plate filter. One is a multichannel radiometer system. Another approach is a quasi-optical RF polarization diplexer and another receiver. Some of the receivers developed were flown in aircraft and degraded considerably because of an LO failure. A technique for adding a 118 GHz channel to the existing Atmospheric Moisture Microwave Scanner radiometer system, using the RF diplexing scheme, is presented

    A 94/183 GHz multichannel radiometer for Convair flights

    A multichannel 94/183 GHz radiometer was designed, built, and installed on the NASA Convair 990 research aircraft to take data for hurricane penetration flights, SEASAT-A underflights for measuring rain and water vapor, and Nimbus-G underflights for new sea ice signatures and sea surface temperature data (94 GHz only). The radiometer utilized IF frequencies of 1, 5, and 8.75 GHz about the peak of the atmospheric water vapor absorption line, centered at 183.3 GHz, to gather data needed to determine the shape of the water molecule line. Another portion of the radiometer operated at 94 GHz and obtained data on the sea brightness temperature, sea ice signatures, and on areas of rain near the ocean surface. The radiometer used a multiple lens antenna/temperature calibration technique using 3 lenses and corrugated feed horns at 94 GHz and 183 GHz. Alignment of the feed beams at 94 GHz and 183 GHz was accomplished using a 45 deg oriented reflecting surface which permitted simultaneous viewing of the feeds on alternate cycles of the chopping intervals

    Dynamics of a liquid dielectric attracted by a cylindrical capacitor

    The dynamics of a liquid dielectric attracted by a vertical cylindrical capacitor is studied. Contrary to what might be expected from the standard calculation of the force exerted by the capacitor, the motion of the dielectric is different depending on whether the charge or the voltage of the capacitor is held constant. The problem turns out to be an unconventional example of dynamics of a system with variable mass, whose velocity can, in certain circumstances, suffer abrupt changes. Under the hypothesis that the voltage remains constant the motion is described in qualitative and quantitative details, and a very brief qualitative discussion is made of the constant charge case.Comment: To appear in European Journal of Physic

    A 94/183 GHz aircraft radiometer system for Project Storm Fury

    A radiometer design suitable for use in NASA's WB-57F aircraft to collect data from severe storm regions was developed. The design recommended was a 94/183 GHz scanning radiometer with 3 IF channels on either side of the 183.3 GHz water vapor line and a single IF channel for a low loss atmospheric window channel at 94 GHz. The development and construction of the 94/183 GHz scanning radiometer known as the Advanced Microwave Moisture Sounder (AMMS) is presented. The radiometer scans the scene below the aircraft over an angle of + or - 45 degrees with the beamwidth of the scene viewed of approximately 2 degrees at 94 GHz and 1 degree at 183 GHz. The AMMS data collection system consists of a microcomputer used to store the radiometer data on the flight cartridge recorder, operate the stepper motor driven scanner, and collect housekeeping data such as thermistor temperature readings and aircraft time code

    Solving the radial Dirac equations: a numerical odyssey

    We discuss, in a pedagogical way, how to solve for relativistic wave functions from the radial Dirac equations. After an brief introduction, in Section II we solve the equations for a linear Lorentz scalar potential, V_s(r), that provides for confinement of a quark. The case of massless u and d quarks is treated first, as these are necessarily quite relativistic. We use an iterative procedure to find the eigenenergies and the upper and lower component wave functions for the ground state and then, later, some excited states. Solutions for the massive quarks (s, c, and b) are also presented. In Section III we solve for the case of a Coulomb potential, which is a time-like component of a Lorentz vector potential, V_v(r). We re-derive, numerically, the (analytically well-known) relativistic hydrogen atom eigenenergies and wave functions, and later extend that to the cases of heavier one-electron atoms and muonic atoms. Finally, Section IV finds solutions for a combination of the V_s and V_v potentials. We treat two cases. The first is one in which V_s is the linear potential used in Sec. II and V_v is Coulombic, as in Sec. III. The other is when both V_s and V_v are linearly confining, and we establish when these potentials give a vanishing spin-orbit interaction (as has been shown to be the case in quark models of the hadronic spectrum).Comment: 39 pages (total), 23 figures, 2 table

    Multidisciplinary Applications of Detached-Eddy Simulation to Separated Flows at High Reynolds Numbers

    We focus on multidisciplinary applications of detached-eddy simulation (DES), principally flight mechanics and aeroelasticity. Specifically, the lateral instability (known as abrupt wing stall) of the preproduction F/A-18E is reproduced using DES, including the unsteady shock motion. The presence of low frequency pressure oscillations due to shock motion in the current simulations and the experiments motivated a full aircraft calculation, which showed low frequency high-magnitude rolling moments that could be a significant contributor to the abrupt wing stall phenomenon. DES is also applied to the F-18 high angle of attack research vehicle (HARV) at a moderate angle of attack to reproduce the vortex breakdown leading to vertical stabilizer buffet. Unsteady tail loads are compared to flight test data. This work lays the foundation for future deforming grid calculations to reproduce the aero-elastic tail buffet seen in flight test. Solution based grid adaption is used on unstructured grids in both cases to improve the resolution in the separated region. Previous DoD Challenge work has demonstrated the unique ability of the DES turbulence treatment to accurately and efficiently predict flows with massive separation at flight Reynolds numbers. DES calculations have been performed using the Cobalt code and on unstructured grids, an approach that can deal with complete configurations with very few compromises. A broad range of flows has been examined in previous Challenge work, including aircraft forebodies, airfoil sections, a missile afterbody, vortex breakdown on a delta wing, and the F-16 and F-15E at high angles-of-attack. All DES predictions exhibited a moderate to significant improvement over results obtained using traditional Reynolds-averaged models and often excellent agreement with experimental/flight-test data. DES combines the efficiency of a Reynolds-averaged turbulence model near the wall with the fidelity of Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) in separated regions. Since it uses Large-Eddy Simulation in the separated regions, it is capable of predicting the unsteady motions associated with separated flows. The development and demonstration of improved methods for the prediction of flight mechanics and aeroelasticity in this Challenge is expected to reduce the acquisition cost of future military aircraft

    The Promise of Prediction Markets

    Prediction markets are markets for contracts that yield payments based on the outcome of an uncertain future event, such as a presidential election. Using these markets as forecasting tools could substantially improve decision making in the private and public sectors. We argue that U.S. regulators should lower barriers to the creation and design of prediction markets by creating a safe harbor for certain types of small stakes markets. We believe our proposed change has the potential to stimulate innovation in the design and use of prediction markets throughout the economy, and in the process to provide information that will benefit the private sector and government alike.Technology and Industry

    Early bowel lengthening procedures : bi-institutional experience and review of the literature

    Early bowel lengthening procedure (EBLP) has been defined as any bowel lengthening procedure performed before six months of age. The purpose of this paper is to compare our experience with literature on this subject to identify common indications. A bi-institutional retrospective analysis was performed. Diagnosis, type of surgery, age at procedure and outcomes were analysed. Eleven EBLP were performed in Manchester and Florence from 2006 to 2021. The median age at surgery was 126 days (102−180), pre-operative median short bowel (SB) length was 28 cm (17−49) with a post-operative median increase of 81%. Furthermore, a PubMed/Embase search was undertaken regarding bowel lengthening procedures performed in the last 40 years. Sixty-one EBLP were identified. The median age was 60 days (1−90). Serial transverse enteroplasty (STEP) was the most frequent procedure used, with a median increased bowel length of 57%. This study confirms that no clear consensus on indication or timing to perform early SB lengthening is reported. According to the gathered data, EBLP should be considered only in cases of actual necessity and performed in a qualified intestinal failure centre
