Refractive effects in the scattering of loosely bound nuclei
A study of the interaction of loosely bound nuclei 6,7Li at 9 and 19 AMeV
with light targets has been undertaken. With the determination of unambiguous
optical potentials in mind, elastic data for four projectile-target
combinations and one neutron transfer reaction 13C(7Li,8Li)12C have been
measured on a large angular range. The kinematical regime encompasses a region
where the mean field (optical potential) has a marked variation with mass and
energy, but turns out to be sufficiently surface transparent to allow strong
refractive effects to be manifested in elastic scattering data at intermediate
angles. The identified exotic feature, a "plateau" in the angular distributions
at intermediate angles, is fully confirmed in four reaction channels and
interpreted as a pre-rainbow oscillation resulting from the interference of the
barrier and internal barrier farside scattering subamplitudes.Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables to submit to Phys. Rev.
Probing molecular free energy landscapes by periodic loading
Single molecule pulling experiments provide information about interactions in
biomolecules that cannot be obtained by any other method. However, the
reconstruction of the molecule's free energy profile from the experimental data
is still a challenge, in particular for the unstable barrier regions. We
propose a new method for obtaining the full profile by introducing a periodic
ramp and using Jarzynski's identity for obtaining equilibrium quantities from
non-equilibrium data. Our simulated experiments show that this method delivers
significant more accurate data than previous methods, under the constraint of

Sydnone C-4 heteroarylation with an indolizine ring via Chichibabin indolizine synthesis
The synthesis of sydnones heteroarylated at C-4 with an indolizine was achieved by Chichibabin (Tschitschibabin) indolizine synthesis starting from the corresponding sydnone-N-pyridinium bromides. The latter compounds were also transformed to sydnone-indolizines connected through a keto group at the C-4 position by refluxing them in 1,2-epoxybutane with an activated alkyne. The structures of the new compounds were assigned by FTIR, NMR spectroscopy and X-ray analysis
Escape from a metastable well under a time-ramped force
Thermally activated escape of an over-damped particle from a metastable well
under the action of a time-ramped force is studied. We express the mean first
passage time (MFPT) as the solution to a partial differential equation, which
we solve numerically for a model case. We discuss two approximations of the
MFPT, one of which works remarkably well over a wide range of loading rates,
while the second is easy to calculate and can provide a valuable first

Rupture of multiple parallel molecular bonds under dynamic loading
Biological adhesion often involves several pairs of specific receptor-ligand
molecules. Using rate equations, we study theoretically the rupture of such
multiple parallel bonds under dynamic loading assisted by thermal activation.
For a simple generic type of cooperativity, both the rupture time and force
exhibit several different scaling regimes. The dependence of the rupture force
on the number of bonds is predicted to be either linear, like a square root or

Quality of CAD-CAM inlays placed on aged resin-based composite restorations used as deep margin elevation: a laboratory study
OBJECTIVES
To assess the impact of the age of resin-based composite (RBC) restorations used for deep margin elevation (DME) on the marginal quality and fracture resistance of inlays.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Permanent human molars with direct RBC restorations, involving the mesial, occlusal, and distal surface (MOD), were allocated to four groups (each n = 12). Half of the teeth underwent thermomechanical loading including 240,000 occlusal load cycles and 534 thermal cycles (TML, 5 °C/55 °C; 49 N, 1.7 Hz). With RBC left in one proximal box as DME, all teeth received MOD inlays, made from lithium disilicate (LDS) or a polymer-infiltrated ceramic network material (PICN). The restored teeth underwent TML including 1.2 million occlusal cyclic loadings and 2673 thermal cycles. The marginal quality was assessed at baseline and after both runs of TML. Load-to-fracture tests were performed. The statistical analysis comprised multiple linear regressions (α = 0.05).
RESULTS
Simulated aging of RBC restorations had no significant effect on the marginal quality at the interface between the RBC and the tooth and the RBC and the inlay (p ≥ 0.247). Across time points, higher percentages of non-continuous margin were observed between the inlay and the tooth than between the tooth and the RBC (p ≤ 0.039). The age of the DME did not significantly affect the fracture resistance (p ≥ 0.052).
CONCLUSIONS
Artificial aging of RBC restorations used for DME had no detrimental effect on the marginal quality and fracture resistance of LDS and PICN inlays.
CLINICAL RELEVANCE
This laboratory study suggests that-in select cases-intact, direct RBC restorations not placed immediately before the delivery of an indirect restoration may be used for DME
