Accuracy of predicting milk yield from alternative milk recording schemes
peer-reviewedThe effect of reducing the frequency of official milk recording and the number of recorded samples per test-day on the accuracy of predicting daily yield and cumulative 305-day yield was investigated. A control data set consisting of 58 210 primiparous cows with milk test-day records every 4 weeks was used to investigate the influence of reduced milk recording frequencies. The accuracy of prediction of daily yield with one milk sample per test-day was investigated using 41 874 testday records from 683 cows. Results show that five or more test-day records taken at 8-weekly intervals (A8) predicted 305-day yield with a high level of accuracy. Correlations between 305-day yield predicted from 4-weekly recording intervals (A4) and from 8-weekly intervals were 0.99, 0.98 and 0.98 for milk, fat and protein, respectively. The mean error in estimating 305-day yield from the A8 scheme was 6.8 kg (s.d. 191 kg) for milk yield, 0.3 kg (s.d. 10 kg) for fat yield, and −0.3 kg (s.d. 7 kg) for protein yield, compared with the A4 scheme. Milk yield and composition taken during either morning (AM) or evening (PM) milking predicted 24-h yield with a high degree of accuracy. Alternating between AM and PM sampling every 4 weeks predicted 305-day yield with a higher degree of accuracy than either all AM or all PM sampling. Alternate AM-PM recording every 4 weeks and AM + PM recording every 8 weeks produced very similar accuracies in predicting 305-day yield compared with the official AM + PM recording every 4 weeks
Weekly Versus Monthly Testosterone Administration On Fast and Slow Skeletal Muscle Fibers in Older Adult Males
Context: In older adults, loss of mobility due to sarcopenia is exacerbated in men with low serum T. T replacement therapy is known to increase muscle mass and strength, but the effect of weekly (WK) vs monthly (MO) administration on specific fiber types is unknown.
Objective: To determine the efficacy of WK vs MO T replacement on the size and functional capacity of individual fast and slow skeletal muscle fiber types.
Design, Setting, and Patients:
Subjects were randomized into a 5-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. All subjects (ages, 61–71 y) were community-dwelling men who had T levels \u3c 500 ng/dL.
Intervention: Subjects were dosed weekly for 5 months, receiving continuous T (WK, n = 5; 100 mg T enanthate, im injection), monthly cycled T (MO, n = 7; alternating months of T and placebo), or placebo (n = 7). Muscle biopsies of the vastus lateralis were obtained before and after treatment.
Main Outcome Measures: Main outcomes for individual slow and fast fibers included fiber diameter, peak force (P0), rate of tension development, maximal shortening velocity, peak power, and Ca2+ sensitivity.
Results: Both treatments increased fiber diameter and peak power, with WK treatment 5-fold more effective than MO in increasing type I fiber P0. WK effects on fiber diameter and force were 1.5-fold higher in slow fibers compared to fast fibers. In fast type II fibers, diameter and P0 increased similarly between treatments. The increased power was entirely due to increased fiber size and force.
Conclusions: In conclusion, T replacement effects were fiber-type dependent, restricted to increases in cell size, P0, and peak power, and dependent on the paradigm selected (WK vs MO)
Exclusion of the Locus for Autosomal Recessive Pseudohypoaldosteronism Type 1 from the Mineralocorticoid Receptor Gene Region on Human Chromosome 4q by Linkage Analysis.
Pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1 (PHA1) is an uncommon inherited disorder characterized by salt-wasting in infancy arising from target organ unresponsiveness to mineralocorticoids. Clinical expression of the disease varies from severely affected infants who may die to apparently asymptomatic individuals. Inheritance is Mendelian and may be either autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive. A defect in the mineralocorticoid receptor has been implicated as a likely cause of PHA1. The gene for human mineralocorticoid receptor (MLR) has been cloned and physically mapped to human chromosome 4q31.1-31.2. The etiological role of MLR in autosomal recessive PHA1 was investigated by performing linkage analysis between PHA1 and three simple sequence length polymorphisms (D4S192, D4S1548, and D4S413) on chromosome 4q in 10 consanguineous families. Linkage analysis was carried out assuming autosomal recessive inheritance with full penetrance and zero phenocopy rate using the MLINK program for two-point analysis and the HOMOZ program for multipoint analysis. Lod scores of less than -2 were obtained over the whole region from D4S192 to D4S413 encompassing MLR. This provdes evidence against MLR as the site of mutations causing PHA1 in the majority of autosomal recessive families
Large N_c, Constituent Quarks, and N, Delta Charge Radii
We show how one may define baryon constituent quarks in a rigorous manner,
given physical assumptions that hold in the large-N_c limit of QCD. This
constituent picture gives rise to an operator expansion that has been used to
study large-N_c baryon observables; here we apply it to the case of charge
radii of the N and Delta states, using minimal dynamical assumptions. For
example, one finds the relation r_p^2 - r_{Delta^+}^2 = r_n^2 - r_{Delta^0}^2
to be broken only by three-body, O(1/N_c^2) effects for any N_c.Comment: 15 pages, 1 eps figure. Version to appear in Phys. Rev.
Eigen electric moments of magnetic-dipolar modes in quasi-2D ferrite disk particles
A property associated with a vortex structure becomes evident from an
analysis of confinement phenomena of magnetic oscillations in a quasi-2D
ferrite disk with a dominating role of magnetic-dipolar
(non-exchange-interaction) spectra. The vortices are guaranteed by the chiral
edge states of magnetic-dipolar modes which result in appearance of eigen
electric moments oriented normally to the disk plane. Due to the
eigen-electric-moment properties, a ferrite disk placed in a microwave cavity
is strongly affected by the cavity RF electric field with a clear evidence for
multi-resonance oscillations. For different cavity parameters, one may observe
the "resonance absorption" and "resonance repulsion" behaviors
Fv antibodies to aflatoxin B1 derived from a pre-immunized antibody phage display library system
The production and characterization of recombinant antibodies to aflatoxin B[SUB1] (AFB[SUB1]), a potent mycotoxin and carcinogen is described. The antibody fragments produced were then applied for use in a surface plasmon resonance-based biosensor (BIAcore), which measures biomolecular interactions in 'real-time'. Single chain Fv (scFv) antibodies were generated to aflatoxin B1 from an established phage display system, which incorporated a range of different plasmids for efficient scFv expression. The scFv's were used in the development of a competitive ELISA, and also for the development of surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based inhibition immunoassays. They were found to be suitable for the detection of AFB[SUB1], in this format, with the assays being sensitive and reproducible
Delta isobar masses, large N_c relations, and the quark model
Motivated by recent remarks on the Delta+ mass and comparisons between the
quark model and relations based on large-N_c with perturbative flavor breaking,
two sets of Delta masses consistent with these constraints are constructed.
These two sets, based either on an experimentally determined mass splitting or
a quark model of isospin symmetry breaking, are shown to be inconsistent. The
model dependence of this inconsistency is examined, and suggestions for
improved experiments are made. An explicit quark model calculation and mass
relations based on the large-N_c limit with perturbative flavor breaking are
compared. The expected level of accuracy of such relations is realized in the
quark model, except for mass relations spanning more than one SU(6)
representation. It is shown that the Delta0 and Delta++ pole masses and Delta0
- Delta+ = (Delta- - Delta++)/3 about 1.5 MeV are more consistent with model
expectations than the analogous Breit-Wigner masses and their splittings.Comment: 10 pages, including 1 eps figure, revte
Polarized Redundant-Baseline Calibration for 21 cm Cosmology Without Adding Spectral Structure
21 cm cosmology is a promising new probe of the evolution of visible matter
in our universe, especially during the poorly-constrained Cosmic Dawn and Epoch
of Reionization. However, in order to separate the 21 cm signal from bright
astrophysical foregrounds, we need an exquisite understanding of our telescopes
so as to avoid adding spectral structure to spectrally-smooth foregrounds. One
powerful calibration method relies on repeated simultaneous measurements of the
same interferometric baseline to solve for the sky signal and for instrumental
parameters simultaneously. However, certain degrees of freedom are not
constrained by asserting internal consistency between redundant measurements.
In this paper, we review the origin of these "degeneracies" of
redundant-baseline calibration and demonstrate how they can source unwanted
spectral structure in our measurement and show how to eliminate that
additional, artificial structure. We also generalize redundant calibration to
dual-polarization instruments, derive the degeneracy structure, and explore the
unique challenges to calibration and preserving spectral smoothness presented
by a polarized measurement.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, updated to match the published MNRAS versio
