    Ultrasonic ranking of toughness of tungsten carbide

    The feasibility of using ultrasonic attenuation measurements to rank tungsten carbide alloys according to their fracture toughness was demonstrated. Six samples of cobalt-cemented tungsten carbide (WC-Co) were examined. These varied in cobalt content from approximately 2 to 16 weight percent. The toughness generally increased with increasing cobalt content. Toughness was first determined by the Palmqvist and short rod fracture toughness tests. Subsequently, ultrasonic attenuation measurements were correlated with both these mechanical test methods. It is shown that there is a strong increase in ultrasonic attenuation corresponding to increased toughness of the WC-Co alloys. A correlation between attenuation and toughness exists for a wide range of ultrasonic frequencies. However, the best correlation for the WC-Co alloys occurs when the attenuation coefficient measured in the vicinity of 100 megahertz is compared with toughness as determined by the Palmqvist technique

    Untangling the Conceptual Isssues Raised in Reydon and Scholz’s Critique of Organizational Ecology and Darwinian Populations

    Reydon and Scholz raise doubts about the Darwinian status of organizational ecology by arguing that Darwinian principles are not applicable to organizational populations. Although their critique of organizational ecology’s typological essentialism is correct, they go on to reject the Darwinian status of organizational populations. This paper claims that the distinction between replicators and interactors, raised in modern philosophy of biology but not discussed by Reydon and Scholz, points the way forward for organizational ecologists. It is possible to conceptualise evolving Darwinian populations providing the inheritance mechanism is appropriately specified.     Consistent reductions of IIB*/M* theory and de Sitter supergravity

    We construct consistent non-linear Kaluza Klein reduction ansatze for a subset of fields arising from the reduction of IIB* and M* theory on dS_5 x H^5 and dS_4 x AdS_7, respectively. These reductions yield four and five-dimensional de Sitter supergravities, albeit with wrong sign kinetic terms. We also demonstrate that the ansatze may be used to lift multi-centered de Sitter black hole solutions to ten and eleven dimensions. The lifted dS_5 black holes correspond to rotating E4-branes of IIB* theory.Comment: 27 pages, late

    Relaxation of strained silicon on Si0.5Ge0.5 virtual substrates

    Strain relaxation has been studied in tensile strained silicon layers grown on Si0.5Ge0.5 virtual substrates, for layers many times the critical thickness, using high resolution x-ray diffraction. Layers up to 30 nm thick were found to relax less than 2% by the glide of preexisting 60° dislocations. Relaxation is limited because many of these dislocations dissociate into extended stacking faults that impede the dislocation glide. For thicker layers, nucleated microtwins were observed, which significantly increased relaxation to 14%. All these tensile strained layers are found to be much more stable than layers with comparable compressive strain

    Moody's Correlated Binomial Default Distributions for Inhomogeneous Portfolios

    This paper generalizes Moody's correlated binomial default distribution for homogeneous (exchangeable) credit portfolio, which is introduced by Witt, to the case of inhomogeneous portfolios. As inhomogeneous portfolios, we consider two cases. In the first case, we treat a portfolio whose assets have uniform default correlation and non-uniform default probabilities. We obtain the default probability distribution and study the effect of the inhomogeneity on it. The second case corresponds to a portfolio with inhomogeneous default correlation. Assets are categorized in several different sectors and the inter-sector and intra-sector correlations are not the same. We construct the joint default probabilities and obtain the default probability distribution. We show that as the number of assets in each sector decreases, inter-sector correlation becomes more important than intra-sector correlation. We study the maximum values of the inter-sector default correlation. Our generalization method can be applied to any correlated binomial default distribution model which has explicit relations to the conditional default probabilities or conditional default correlations, e.g. Credit Risk+{}^{+}, implied default distributions.     Supersymmetric Balance of Forces and Condensation of BPS States

    Until now all known static multi black hole solutions described BPS states with charges of the same sign. Such solutions could not be related to flat directions in the space of BPS states. The total number of such states could not spontaneously increase because of the charge conservation. We show that there exist static BPS configurations which remain in equilibrium even if they consist of states with opposite electric (or magnetic) charges from vector multiplets. This is possible because of the exact cancellation between the Coulomb and scalar forces. In particular, in the theories with N=4 or N=2 supersymmetry there exist stable massless multi center configurations with vanishing total charge. Since such configurations have vanishing energy and charge independently of their number, they can be associated with flat directions in the space of all possible BPS states. For N=2 case this provides a realization of the idea that BPS condensates could relate to each other different vacua of the string theory.Comment: 19 pages, LaTe

    Weakly nonlinear theory of grain boundary motion in patterns with crystalline symmetry

    We study the motion of a grain boundary separating two otherwise stationary domains of hexagonal symmetry. Starting from an order parameter equation appropriate for hexagonal patterns, a multiple scale analysis leads to an analytical equation of motion for the boundary that shares many properties with that of a crystalline solid. We find that defect motion is generically opposed by a pinning force that arises from non-adiabatic corrections to the standard amplitude equation. The magnitude of this force depends sharply on the mis-orientation angle between adjacent domains so that the most easily pinned grain boundaries are those with an angle between four and eight degrees. Although pinning effects may be small, they do not vanish asymptotically near the onset of this subcritical bifurcation, and can be orders of magnitude larger than those present in smectic phases that bifurcate supercritically
