ATLAS RPC Quality Assurance results at INFN Lecce

    Get PDF
The main results of the quality assurance tests performed on the Resistive Plate Chamber used by the ATLAS experiment at LHC as muon trigger chambers are reported and discussed. Since July 2004, about 270 RPC units has been certified at INFN Lecce site and delivered to CERN, for being integrated in the final muon station of the ATLAS barrel region. We show the key RPC characteristics which qualify the performance of this detector technology as muon trigger chamber in the harsh LHC enviroments. These are dark current, chamber efficiency, noise rate, gas volume tomography, and gas leakage.Comment: Comments: 6 pages, 1 table, 9 figures Proceedings of XXV Physics in Collision-Prague, Czech Republic, 6-9 July 200

Temperature dependence of the photoluminescence properties of colloidal Cd Se ∕ Zn S core/shell quantum dots embedded in a polystyrene matrix

    We report on the temperature dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum and of the PL relaxation dynamics for colloidal CdSe∕ZnS\mathrm{Cd}\mathrm{Se}∕\mathrm{Zn}\mathrm{S} core/shell quantum dots (QDs) embedded in an inert polystyrene matrix. We demonstrate that the confinement energy in the QDs is independent of the temperature. The coupling with both acoustic and optical phonons is also studied. Quantum confinement results in a strong increase of the exciton\char21{}acoustic-phonon coupling constant, up to 71\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{eV}∕\mathrm{K}, and in a reduced exciton\char21{}longitudinal-optical (LO)-phonon coupling constant, down to 21meV21\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{meV}, with respect to bulk CdSe. In addition, we demonstrate that the main nonradiative process that limits the quantum efficiency of the QD at room temperature is the thermal escape from the dot assisted by scattering with four LO phonons. Thermally activated trapping in surface states is also observed at low temperature, with an activation energy of about 15meV15\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{meV}

Characteristics of neonatal GBS disease during a multicentre study (2007-2010) and in the year 2012

    Get PDF
iNTRODUCTION: The characteristics of Group B Streptococcal (GBS) early onset (EOD) and late onset (LOD) neonatal infections in Italy were analyzed. Two periods were considered, a first 3-years period (2007-2010), when notification of GBS infections was enforced under the auspices of the Italian Ministry of Health, and a second 1 year period (2012) when reporting on neonatal GBS disease continued on voluntary basis. METHODS: A standardized form was used to collect data on cases of neonatal GBS disease. They included both maternal and neonatal data. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The two surveys underlined that preterm deliveries, precipitous labor and negatively GBS screened mothers are common causes of EOD occurrence, possibly explained by inadequate, or lack of, intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis. Nevertheless, measures for reducing prevention failures and EOD incidence by an higher adherence to prevention strategies, as the Centre for Disease Control recommendations, are still possible and should be encouraged

Photo-oxidation of ethylene over mesoporous Tio2/Sio2 catalysts

Mesoporous TiO2/SiO2 catalysts were prepared in order to increase the post-harvest life of climacteric fruits and vegetables reducing ethylene concentration by photo-oxidation. TiO2/SiO2 powders were synthesized by sol-gel method using titanium isopropoxide Ti(OiPr)4 and tetraethoxysilane Si(OC2H5)4 as source of metal oxides. Mesoporous SiO2 framework was used as catalyst support of nanostructured TiO2 to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency. Different TiO2/SiO2 molar ratios were prepared through sol-gel process. A liquid-crystal template route allowed to obtain the mesoporous silica structure, and contemporary TiO2 insertion in the silica framework. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis demonstrated that silica insertion in TiO2 framework inhibits the anatase to rutile phase transformation at higher sintering temperature. The photocatalytic efficiency of the catalysts was measured by the photo-oxidation of ethylene gas under UV light irradiation. Complete photo-oxidation of ethylene was observed after 24 h of reaction time. Results show that the silica framework increases the surface area of the composites and make crystalline anatase phase more stable at higher temperature

The Air Microwave Yield (AMY) experiment - A laboratory measurement of the microwave emission from extensive air showers

The AMY experiment aims to measure the microwave bremsstrahlung radiation (MBR) emitted by air-showers secondary electrons accelerating in collisions with neutral molecules of the atmosphere. The measurements are performed using a beam of 510 MeV electrons at the Beam Test Facility (BTF) of Frascati INFN National Laboratories. The goal of the AMY experiment is to measure in laboratory conditions the yield and the spectrum of the GHz emission in the frequency range between 1 and 20 GHz. The final purpose is to characterise the process to be used in a next generation detectors of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. A description of the experimental setup and the first results are presented.Comment: 3 pages -- EPS-HEP'13 European Physical Society Conference on High Energy Physics (July, 18-24, 2013) at Stockholm, Swede

The Black Sea Physics Analysis and Forecasting System within the Framework of the Copernicus Marine Service

    Get PDF
This work describes the design, implementation and validation of the Black Sea physics analysis and forecasting system, developed by the Black Sea Physics production unit within the Black Sea Monitoring and Forecasting Center as part of the Copernicus Marine Environment and Monitoring Service. The system provides analyses and forecasts of the temperature, salinity, sea surface height, mixed layer depth and currents for the whole Black Sea basin, excluding the Azov Sea, and has been operational since 2016. The system is composed of the NEMO (v 3.4) numerical model and an OceanVar scheme, which brings together real time observations (in-situ temperature and salinity profiles, sea level anomaly and sea surface temperature satellite data). An operational quality assessment framework is used to evaluate the accuracy of the products which set the basic standards for the future upgrades, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the model and the observing system in the Black Sea

Early Warning Systems for Emerging Profiles of Antimicrobial Resistance in Italy: A National Survey

    Get PDF
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) national surveillance systems in Italy lack alert systems for timely detection of emerging profiles of AMR with potential relevance to public health. Furthermore, the existence of early warning systems (EWS) at subnational level is unclear. This study aims at mapping and characterizing EWS for microbiological threats available at regional level in Italy, focusing on emerging AMR, and at outlining potential barriers and facilitators to their development/implementation. To this end, a three-section, web-based survey was developed and administered to all Italian regional AMR representatives from June to August 2022. Twenty out of twenty-one regions and autonomous provinces (95.2%) responded to the survey. Among these, nine (45%) reported the implementation of EWS for microbiological threats at regional level, three (15%) reported that EWS are in the process of being developed, and eight (40%) reported that EWS are not currently available. EWS characteristics varied widely among the identified systems concerning both AMR profiles reported and data flow: the microorganisms most frequently included were extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Enterobacterales, with the lack of a dedicated regional IT platform reported in most cases. The results of this study depict a highly heterogeneous scenario and suggest that more efforts aimed at strengthening national AMR surveillance systems are needed

A new search-and-rescue service in the Mediterranean Sea: a demonstration of the operational capability and an evaluation of its performance using real case scenarios

    Get PDF
Abstract. A new web-based and mobile decision support system (DSS) for search-and-rescue (SAR) at sea is presented, and its performance is evaluated using real case scenarios. The system, named OCEAN-SAR, is accessible via the website http://www.ocean-sar.com. In addition to the website, dedicated applications for iOS and Android have been created to optimise the user experience on mobile devices. OCEAN-SAR simulates drifting objects at sea, using as input ocean currents and wind data provided, respectively, by the CMEMS and ECMWF. The modelling of the drifting objects is based on the leeway model, which parameterises the wind drag of an object using a series of coefficients. These coefficients have been measured in field experiments for different types of objects, ranging from a person in the water to a coastal freighter adrift. OCEAN-SAR provides the user with an intuitive interface to run simulations and to visualise their results using Google Maps. The performance of the service is evaluated by comparing simulations to data from the Italian Coast Guard pertaining to actual incidents in the Mediterranean Sea
