Modeling Natural, Organic Matter in an Unfiltered Surface Water Supply
Wachusett Reservoir, located in central Massachusetts, supplies water to the Boston, Massachusetts metropolitan area. The reservoir receives water from a watershed of 117 square miles, as well as water transferred from the Quabbin Reservoir to the west. Quabbin Reservoir water generally has lower levels of most water quality constituents than water received from the Wachusett Reservoir watershed. The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) manages the watershed and monitors tributary and in-reservoir water quality, while the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is responsible for treatment and distribution. CE QUAL W2 is a two dimensional, laterally averaged water quantity and quality modeling program. Version 2 of this program, used in this research, provides the ability to model 21 water quality constituents in addition to water surface elevation and temperature. Constituents modeled in this study include: total organic carbon (TOC) consisting oflabile dissolved organic matter (LDOM) refractory dissolved organic matter (RDOM) algae, and detritus; nutrients including nitrate/nitrite, arnmonmm, orthophosphate; and the absorbance of 254 urn ultraviolet light (UV254). This study implemented CE QUAL W2 to study the sources, fate, and transport of these constituents in Wachusett Reservoir. The water quality model was calibrated using data from 2001 and 2002. All required input and initial condition data, including \u27inflow and outflow quantities, temperatures, constituent levels, and ambient meteorology were available from DCR, MWRA, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Values for model parameters were determined to ensure best fit between model predictions and field data for Cosgrove Aqueduct, the main withdrawal of Wachusett Reservoir. The water quality model was then validated with data from 2000 before simulations were run. NOM levels were relatively constant throughout the calibration period, although seasonal variation is significant. Lower NOM levels generally occur when the majority of withdrawn water originated in Quabbin Reservoir, and higher levels occur when water originating in the Wachusett Tributaries dominates. Measured TOC levels varied from 1.8 to 3.3 mglL at Cosgrove during 2001 - 2002. These TOC trends were captured by defining 95% of inflow TOC as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), defining the remaining 5% detritus, and then defining 20% of inflow DOC as LDOM, and the remaining 80% as RDOM. First order LDOM and RDOM decay rates of 0.008 and 0.0008 day I, as well as a first order RDOM to LDOM decay rate of 0.0008 day I were most appropriate. Maximum algal growth and respiration rates of 1.9 and 0.1 day I were used. UV254 varied from 0.03 to 0.08 cm·I during the calibration period. These trends were captured by a first order temperature dependent decay rate of 0.0008 day· I and a value of 2.6E-5 em2 !cal for a constant (a) relating the impact of sunlight irradiance on UV254 decay. The parameter values determined through calibration were successfully used to validate the model using data from 2000, despite the lack of constituent data for Quabbin Transfer for that year (constituent levels were assumed to be the average of 2001 ~ 2002 levels). TOC levels at Cosgrove Aqueduct ranged from 1.7 to 3.4 mglL for that year, while UV254 levels ranged between 0.04 and 0.08 em .1. Two simulations showed that transferring water from Quabbin to Wachusett at 8.7 m3!s during periods of high tributary runoff may reduce TOC levels at Cosgrove by up to 0.2 mglL and UV254 levels by up to 0.008 em·I. A third simulation demonstrated that a large runoff event occurring in late summer! early fall may lead to large increases in TOC and UV254 levels at Cosgrove, and may result in an unusual algal bloom. A fourth simulation was run to evaluate the impact of bypassing Wachusett. Reservoir with Quabbin Transfer; the model predicts that TOC and UV254 levels at Cosgrove will increase, but the increased mean hydraulic residence time within Wachusett Reservoir results in more decay of those constituents. The resulting mixture of Quabbin and Wachusett water in similar proportions to those that actually occurred contains lower NOM levels than would exist if the bypass did not occur. These results show that Wachusett Reservoir constituent levels at the Cosgrove withdrawal are strongly source driven, although in-reservoir processes are also important. The calibration and validation results indicate that CE QUAL W2 can be effectively used to predict NOM levels at Cosgrove. The simulation results suggest that controlled and uncontrolled events may impact water quality at Cosgrove

Capuchin monkeys do not show human-like pricing effects
Recent work in judgment and decision-making has shown that a good’s price can have irrational effects on people’s preferences. People tend to prefer goods that cost more money and assume that such expensive goods will be more effective, even in cases where the price of the good is itself arbitrary. Although much work has documented the existence of these pricing effects, unfortunately little work has addressed where these price effects come from in the first place. Here we use a comparative approach to distinguish between different accounts of this bias and to explore the origins of these effects. Specifically, we test whether brown capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella) are also susceptible to pricing effects within the context of an experimentally trained token economy. Using a capuchin population previously trained in a token market, we explored whether monkeys used price as an indicator of value across four experiments. Although monkeys demonstrated an understanding of which goods had which prices (consistently shifting preferences to cheaper goods when prices were increased), we observed no evidence that such price information affected their valuation of different kinds of goods. These results suggest that human price effects may involve more sophisticated human-unique cognitive capacities, such as an understanding of market forces and signaling

Differing worldviews: The politics of happiness, meaning, and psychological richness
Objective/Background: Conservative ideology, broadly speaking, has been widely linked to greater happiness and meaning in life. Is that true of all forms of a good life? We examined whether a psychologically rich life is associated with political orientation, system justification, and Protestant work ethic, independent of two other traditional forms of a good life: a happy life and a meaningful life. Method: Participants completed a questionnaire that assessed conservative worldviews and three aspects of well-being (N = 583 in Study 1; N = 348 in Study 2; N = 436 in Study 3; N = 1,217 in Study 4; N = 2,176 in Study 5; N = 516 in Study 6). Results: Happiness was associated with political conservatism and system justification, and meaning in life was associated with Protestant work ethic. In contrast, zero-order correlations showed that psychological richness was not associated with conservative worldviews. However, when happiness and meaning in life were included in multiple regression models, the nature of the association shifted: Psychological richness was consistently inversely associated with system justification and on average less political conservatism, suggesting that happiness and meaning in life were suppressor variables. Conclusions: These findings suggest that happiness and meaning in life are associated with conservative ideology, whereas psychological richness is not.</p
Akt regulates centrosome migration and spindle orientation in the early Drosophila melanogaster embryo
Correct positioning and morphology of the mitotic spindle is achieved through regulating the interaction between microtubules (MTs) and cortical actin. Here we find that, in the Drosophila melanogaster early embryo, reduced levels of the protein kinase Akt result in incomplete centrosome migration around cortical nuclei, bent mitotic spindles, and loss of nuclei into the interior of the embryo. We show that Akt is enriched at the embryonic cortex and is required for phosphorylation of the glycogen synthase kinase-3β homologue Zeste-white 3 kinase (Zw3) and for the cortical localizations of the adenomatosis polyposis coli (APC)–related protein APC2/E-APC and the MT + Tip protein EB1. We also show that reduced levels of Akt result in mislocalization of APC2 in postcellularized embryonic mitoses and misorientation of epithelial mitotic spindles. Together, our results suggest that Akt regulates a complex containing Zw3, Armadillo, APC2, and EB1 and that this complex has a role in stabilizing MT–cortex interactions, facilitating both centrosome separation and mitotic spindle orientation

MS AHI1 genetic risk promotes IFNγ+ CD4+ T cells
Objective: To study the influence of the Abelson helper integration site 1 (AHI1) locus associated with MS susceptibility on CD4+ T cell function. Methods: We characterized the chromatin state of T cells in the MS-associated AHI1 linkage disequilibrium (LD) block. The expression and the role of the AHI1 variant were examined in T cells from genotyped healthy subjects who were recruited from the PhenoGenetic Project, and the function of AHI1 was explored using T cells from Ahi1 knockout mice. Results: Chromatin state analysis reveals that the LD block containing rs4896153, which is robustly associated with MS susceptibility (odds ratio 1.15, p = 1.65 × 10−13), overlaps with strong enhancer regions that are present in human naive and memory CD4+ T cells. Relative to the rs4896153A protective allele, the rs4896153T susceptibility allele is associated with decreased AHI1 mRNA expression, specifically in naive CD4+ T cells (p = 1.73 × 10−74, n = 213), and we replicate this effect in an independent set of subjects (p = 2.5 × 10−9, n = 32). Functional studies then showed that the rs4896153T risk variant and the subsequent decreased AHI1 expression were associated with reduced CD4+ T cell proliferation and a specific differentiation into interferon gamma (IFNγ)–positive T cells when compared with the protective rs4896153A allele. This T cell phenotype was also observed in murine CD4+ T cells with genetic deletion of Ahi1. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the effect of the AHI1 genetic risk for MS is mediated, in part, by enhancing the development of proinflammatory IFNγ+ T cells that have previously been implicated in MS and its mouse models
Social comparison processes in the experience of personal relative deprivation.
Drawing on social comparison and equity theories, we investigated the role that perceived similarity of a comparison target plays in how resentful people feel about their relative financial status. In Study 1, participants tended to choose a comparison target who was better off, and they selected a target they perceived to be more similar than dissimilar along dimensions that surrounded their financial outcomes. In Study 1, perceived relative disadvantage was positively associated with resentment regardless of the perceived similarity of the comparison target. The results of Studies 2 to 5b clarified these findings by showing that being both similar and dissimilar to a target can cause resentment depending on the context. Using hypothetical and real social comparisons, we found that people are more dissatisfied with their financial outcomes when their comparative targets have the same background qualifications (i.e., are similar) but are financially better off (Studies 2, 3b, 4, and 5b). However, we also found that when the comparative financial contexts were similar (i.e., equal affluence), participants were more dissatisfied when their target for comparison had lower qualifications (i.e., was dissimilar; Studies 2, 3a, 4, and 5a). In all cases, perceptions of unfairness mediated the effects of social comparison on financial dissatisfaction. Taken together, these studies address some of the ambiguities around what it means to be similar to a target in the context of social comparisons of affluence, and they underscore the importance of perceived unfairness in the link between social comparison and resentment with one’s financial status.Leverhulme Trust. Many Labs 5: Testing Pre-Data-Collection Peer Review as an Intervention to Increase Replicability
Replication studies in psychological science sometimes fail to reproduce prior findings. If these studies use methods that are unfaithful to the original study or ineffective in eliciting the phenomenon of interest, then a failure to replicate may be a failure of the protocol rather than a challenge to the original finding. Formal pre-data-collection peer review by experts may address shortcomings and increase replicability rates. We selected 10 replication studies from the Reproducibility Project: Psychology (RP:P; Open Science Collaboration, 2015) for which the original authors had expressed concerns about the replication designs before data collection; only one of these studies had yielded a statistically significant effect (p < .05). Commenters suggested that lack of adherence to expert review and low-powered tests were the reasons that most of these RP:P studies failed to replicate the original effects. We revised the replication protocols and received formal peer review prior to conducting new replication studies. We administered the RP:P and revised protocols in multiple laboratories (median number of laboratories per original study = 6.5, range = 3–9; median total sample = 1,279.5, range = 276–3,512) for high-powered tests of each original finding with both protocols. Overall, following the preregistered analysis plan, we found that the revised protocols produced effect sizes similar to those of the RP:P protocols (Δr = .002 or .014, depending on analytic approach). The median effect size for the revised protocols (r = .05) was similar to that of the RP:P protocols (r = .04) and the original RP:P replications (r = .11), and smaller than that of the original studies (r = .37). Analysis of the cumulative evidence across the original studies and the corresponding three replication attempts provided very precise estimates of the 10 tested effects and indicated that their effect sizes (median r = .07, range = .00–.15) were 78% smaller, on average, than the original effect sizes (median r = .37, range = .19–.50).Additional co-authors: Ivan Ropovik, Balazs Aczel, Lena F. Trust in government and its associations with health behaviour and prosocial behaviour during the COVID-19 pandemic
Previous studies suggested that public trust in government is vital for implementations of social policies that rely on public's behavioural responses. This study examined associations of trust in government regarding COVID-19 control with recommended health behaviours and prosocial behaviours. Data from an international survey with representative samples (N=23,733) of 23 countries were analysed. Specification curve analysis showed that higher trust in government was significantly associated with higher adoption of health and prosocial behaviours in all reasonable specifications of multilevel linear models (median standardised β=0.173 and 0.244, P<0.001). We further used structural equation modelling to explore potential determinants of trust in government regarding pandemic control. Governments perceived as well organised, disseminating clear messages and knowledge on COVID-19, and perceived fairness were positively associated with trust in government (standardised β=0.358, 0.230, 0.055, and 0.250, P<0.01). These results highlighted the importance of trust in government in the control of COVID-19
Predictors of adherence to public health behaviors for fighting COVID-19 derived from longitudinal data
The present paper examines longitudinally how subjective perceptions about COVID-19, one's community, and the government predict adherence to public health measures to reduce the spread of the virus. Using an international survey (N = 3040), we test how infection risk perception, trust in the governmental response and communications about COVID-19, conspiracy beliefs, social norms on distancing, tightness of culture, and community punishment predict various containment-related attitudes and behavior. Autoregressive analyses indicate that, at the personal level, personal hygiene behavior was predicted by personal infection risk perception. At social level, social distancing behaviors such as abstaining from face-to-face contact were predicted by perceived social norms. Support for behavioral mandates was predicted by confidence in the government and cultural tightness, whereas support for anti-lockdown protests was predicted by (lower) perceived clarity of communication about the virus. Results are discussed in light of policy implications and creating effective interventions
