Beyond Technological Diversification: The Impact of Employee Diversity on Innovation

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the effect of employee diversity in terms of gender, age, ethnicity and education on the firm’s likelihood of introducing an innovation. The analysis draws on data from a recent innovation survey. This data is merged with a linked employer-employee dataset that allow us to identify the employee composition of each firm. We test the hypothesis that employee diversity is associated with better innovative performance. The econometric analysis reveals positive, negative and non-significant effects of the different employee characteristics on the likelihood of introducing an innovation.Diversity, Innovation, Education, Gender, Cultural Backgrund

Pengaruh Volume Perdagangan, EPS Dan PER Terhadap Harga Saham Sektor Pertambangan Pada Periode 2000-2005 Di Bursa Efek Jakarta

Entropy and efficiency of a molecular motor model

In this paper we investigate the use of path-integral formalism and the concepts of entropy and traffic in the context of molecular motors. We show that together with time-reversal symmetry breaking arguments one can find bounds on efficiencies of such motors. To clarify this techinque we use it on one specific model to find both the thermodynamic and the Stokes efficiencies, although the arguments themselves are more general and can be used on a wide class of models. We also show that by considering the molecular motor as a ratchet, one can find additional bounds on the thermodynamic efficiency

    Job Insecurity Dalam Organisasi

The phenomenon of job insecurity is not a new term in business organization environment. Job insecurity is the condition which the employees feel threated by uncertainty of sustainability in working at their organizations. Appearance of job insecurity will cause negative impact to employees physically and psychologically both in short term and long term. However, in fact, not all organizations aware about this significant effect of it toward employee specifically and organization generally. Then, what is the importance of managing job insecurity in employment relationship? This article aims to explain the effect of job insecurity in one organization and how the company should manage this situation, in an employment relationship context

Explaining individual response using aggregated data

    Get PDF
Empirical analysis of individual response behavior is sometimes limited due to the lack of explanatory variables at the individual level. In this paper we put forward a new approach to estimate the effects of covariates on individual response, where the covariates are unknown at the individual level but observed at some aggregated level. This situation may, for example, occur if the response variable is available at the household level but covariates only at the zip-code level. We describe the missing individual covariates by a latent variable model which matches the sample information at the aggregate level. Parameter estimates can be obtained using maximum likelihood or a Bayesian approach. We illustrate the approach estimating the effects of household characteristics on donating behavior to a Dutch charity. Donating behavior is observed at the household level, while the covariates are only observed at the zip-code level

    Online rules for container stacking

Container stacking rules are an important factor in container terminal efficiency. In this paper, we investigate two concepts to increase efficiency and compare them to several benchmark algorithms, using a discrete-event simulation tool. The first concept is to use knowledge about container departure times, in order to limit the number of reshuffles. We stack containers leaving shortly before each other on top of each other. The second concept is the trade-off between stacking further away in the terminal versus stacking close to the exit points and accepting more reshuffles. It is concluded that even the use of imperfect or imprecise departure time information leads to significant improvements in efficiency. Minimizing the difference in departure times proved to be important. It was also found that the trade-off between stacking further away in the terminal versus stacking close by the exit points and accepting more reshuffles leads to improvements over the benchmark
