Free-carrier screening of polarization fields in wurtzite GaN/InGaN laser structures
The free-carrier screening of macroscopic polarization fields in wurtzite
GaN/InGaN quantum wells lasers is investigated via a self-consistent
tight-binding approach. We show that the high carrier concentrations found
experimentally in nitride laser structures effectively screen the built-in
spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization fields, thus inducing a
``field-free'' band profile. Our results explain some heretofore puzzling
experimental data on nitride lasers, such as the unusually high lasing
excitation thresholds and emission blue-shifts for increasing excitation

Effects of macroscopic polarization in III-V nitride multi-quantum-wells
Huge built-in electric fields have been predicted to exist in wurtzite III-V
nitrides thin films and multilayers. Such fields originate from heterointerface
discontinuities of the macroscopic bulk polarization of the nitrides. Here we
discuss the background theory, the role of spontaneous polarization in this
context, and the practical implications of built-in polarization fields in
nitride nanostructures. To support our arguments, we present detailed
self-consistent tight-binding simulations of typical nitride QW structures in

Non-linear macroscopic polarization in III-V nitride alloys
We study the dependence of macroscopic polarization on composition and strain
in wurtzite III-V nitride ternary alloys using ab initio density-functional
techniques. The spontaneous polarization is characterized by a large bowing,
strongly dependent on the alloy microscopic structure. The bowing is due to the
different response of the bulk binaries to hydrostatic pressure, and to
internal strain effects (bond alternation). Disorder effects are instead minor.
Deviations from parabolicity (simple bowing) are of order 10 % in the most
extreme case of AlInN alloy, much less at all other compositions. Piezoelectric
polarization is also strongly non-linear. At variance with the spontaneous
component, this behavior is independent of microscopic alloy structure or
disorder effects, and due entirely to the non-linear strain dependence of the
bulk piezoelectric response. It is thus possible to predict the piezoelectric
polarization for any alloy composition using the piezoelectricity of the parent

Impact of SARS-CoV-2 on dentistry: a review of literature.
OBJECTIVE: SARS-CoV-2 is a new Coronavirus identified as the cause of Corona- virus disease in 2019 (COVID-19). The epidemic spread in China and beyond its borders, involv- ing 114 countries with more than 5 million dead. On March 11, the WHO declared the spread of SARS-CoV-2 to be a pandemic and encouraged nations to adopt harsh restrictive measures. Therefore, patients more and more often turn to dental offices only for emergencies. Healthcare professionals, including dentists, are at high in- fectious risk. In fact, the closeness to the oral cavity and nasopharynx and the use of drills or ultrasonic devices that cause aerosol release, make dental professions at high risk of bacterial and viral infections. The way patients are treat- ed has changed. In fact, it should be mandato- ry to carry out a pre-treatment telephone triage and the use of mouthwashes to reduce bacterial load. In the current pandemic, it is necessary to adopt specific safety protocols that can protect dental operators as well as limit the spread of the virus. The purpose of this review is to pres- ent an overview on ways to reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 contagion in dentistry by focusing on the immediate situation as well as by look- ing towards the future.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To reach the review purpose, we selected a series of studies using keywords âCOVID-19â OR âSARS-CoV-2â in association with âdentistryâ AND âsafety proto- colsâ AND âhealthcare proceduresâ AND âindivid- ual protection dispositiveâ AND âair transmissionâ AND âdropletâ. We selected papers exclusively in English language, up to 1st January 2022.
RESULTS: During future phases of the pan- demic, everywhere in the World, it is necessary to impose all dentistry team both a serological screening and the vaccination, as already estab- lished for all health staff in Italy.
CONCLUSIONS: For own safety, it is an import- ant for the whole dentistry category constantly update the devices and the protocols adopted, as well as monitoring the real infectious threats, which may occur
Beneficial effects of curtailing immune susceptibility in an Alzheimer's disease model
Background Currently, there are no effective therapeutic options for Alzheimer's disease, the most common, multifactorial form of dementia, characterized by anomalous amyloid accumulation in the brain. Growing evidence points to neuroinflammation as a major promoter of AD. We have previously shown that the proinflammatory cytokine TNFSF10 fuels AD neuroinflammation, and that its immunoneutralization results in improved cognition in the 3xTg-AD mouse. Methods Here, we hypothesize that inflammatory hallmarks of AD might parallel with central and peripheral immune response dysfunction. To verify such hypothesis, we used a triple transgenic mouse model of AD. 3xTg-AD mice were treated for 12 months with an anti-TNFSF10 antibody, and thereafter immune/inflammatory markers including COX2, iNOS, IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha, CD3, GITR, and FoxP3 (markers of regulatory T cells) were measured in the spleen as well as in the hippocampus. Results Spleens displayed accumulation of amyloid-beta(1-42) (A beta(1-42)), as well as high expression of Treg cell markers FoxP3 and GITR, in parallel with the increased levels of inflammatory markers COX2, iNOS, IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha, and blunted IL-10 expression. Moreover, CD3 expression was increased in the hippocampus, consistently with FoxP3 and GITR. After chronic treatment of 3xTg-AD mice with an anti-TNFSF10 antibody, splenic FoxP3, GITR, and the above-mentioned inflammatory markers expression was restored to basal levels, while expression of IL-10 was increased. A similar picture was observed in the hippocampus. Such improvement of peripheral and CNS inflammatory/immune response was associated with decreased microglial activity in terms of TNF alpha production, as well as decreased expression of both amyloid and phosphorylated tau protein in the hippocampus of treated 3xTg-AD mice. Interestingly, we also reported an increased expression of both CD3 and FoxP3, in sections from human AD brain. Conclusions We suggest that neuroinflammation in the brain of 3xTg-AD mice triggered by TNFSF10 might result in a more general overshooting of the immune response. Treatment with an anti-TNFSF10 antibody blunted inflammatory processes both in the spleen and hippocampus. These data confirm the detrimental role of TNFSF10 in neurodegeneration, and corroborate the hypothesis of the anti-TNFSF10 strategy as a potential treatment to improve outcomes in AD
Stabbed to death. An osteobiography example of violence among Longobards (Povegliano Veronese, Italy, 6th-8th c CE)
Here we report the reconstruction of the osteobiography of an adult male buried in the Longobard cemetery of Povegliano Veronese (Northern Italy, late 6th â early 8th century CE), who shows signs of interpersonal violence. The palaeopathological investigation reveals sharp force traumas on the body of the fourth lumbar vertebra and on two right ribs. The absence of signs of healing or bone remodelling indicates that the defects were perimortem. The injuries probably afected vital organs, leading to death. Further macroscopic observations of the skeleton suggest horseback-riding activity. Strontium isotope data from tooth enamel indicate a non-local origin of the individual. X ray and CT scan acquisition and Scanning Electron Microscopy analyses were performed to investigate the bone defects. His osteobiography was interpreted and contextualised in the complex socio-political scenario of post classical Italy. The results document that he spent his childhood outside the Povegliano Veronese area, that during his life he was likely a horseback rider active in battle, but that his violent death did not happen during warfare/battle. This multi-layered approach, supported by archaeological information, osteological investigation, biomolecular analysis, and virtual imagery, allowed for the extensive reconstruction of an individual's life history
Brimonidine is Neuroprotective in Animal Paradigm of Retinal Ganglion Cell Damage
To investigate the neuroprotective effect of brimonidine after retinal ischemia damage on mouse eye. Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy characterized by retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) death, irreversible peripheral and central visual field loss, and high intraocular pressure. Ischemia reperfusion (I/R) injury model was used in C57BL/6J mice to mimic conditions of glaucomatous neurodegeneration. Mouse eyes were treated topically with brimonidine and pattern electroretinogram were used to assess the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) function. A wide range of inflammatory markers, as well as anti-inflammatory and neurotrophic molecules, were investigated to figure out the potential protective effects of brimonidine in mouse retina. In particular, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) and its death receptor DR-5, TNF-α, GFAP, Iba-1, NOS, IL-1ÎČ and IL-10 were assessed in mouse retina that underwent to I/R insult with or without brimonidine treatment. Brimonidine provided remarkable RGCs protection in our paradigm. PERG amplitude values were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in brimonidine-treated eyes in comparison to I/R retinas. Retinal BDNF mRNA levels in the I/R group dropped significantly (p < 0.05) compared to the control group (normal mice); brimonidine treatment counteracted the downregulation of retinal BDNF mRNA in I/R eyes. Retinal inflammatory markers increased significantly (p < 0.05) in the I/R group and brimonidine treatment was able to revert that. The anti-inflammatory IL-10 decreased significantly (p < 0.05) after retinal I/R insult and increased significantly (p < 0.05) in the group treated with brimonidine. In conclusion, brimonidine was effective in preventing loss of function of RGCs and in regulating inflammatory biomarkers elicited by retinal I/R injury
Antioxidant Effects of a Hydroxytyrosol-Based Pharmaceutical Formulation on Body Composition, Metabolic State, and Gene Expression: A Randomized Double-Blinded, Placebo-Controlled Crossover Trial
Hydroxytyrosol (HT) plays a significant role in cardiovascular disease (CVD) protection, and its metabolites are able to protect from the endothelial dysfunction commonly present in atherosclerosis. This randomized double-blinded, placebo-controlled crossover trial determined the effect in healthy volunteers of two gastroresistant capsules containing 15âmg/day of HT, for a 3-week period (HTT).
Evaluation of nutritional status, serum metabolites, oxidative stress biomarkers, and gene expression of 9 genes related to oxidative stress, inflammation, and CVDs was performed.
Oxidation biomarkers like thiol group (p = 0.001), total antioxidant status (TAS) (p = 0.001), superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) (2âÎÎCtâ=â3.7), and plasma concentration of HT (2.83 ÎŒg·mLâ1) were significantly increased,while nitrite (p = 0.001), nitrate (p = 0.001), and malondialdehyde (MDA) (p = 0.02), were drastically reduced after HTT. A significant reduction of body fat mass percentage (p = 0.01), suprailiac skinfold (p = 0.01), and weight (p = 0.04; Î%â=ââ0.46%) was observed after HTT.
This study shows that regular intake of 15âmg/day of HT changed body composition parameters and modulated the antioxidant profile and the expression of inflammation and oxidative stress-related genes. However, it is advisable to personalize HT doses in order to exert its health benefits in CVD prevention and protection of LDL-C particles from oxidative damage.
