    Constraints on Extragalactic Point Source Flux from Diffuse Neutrino Limits

    We constrain the maximum flux from extragalactic neutrino point sources by using diffuse neutrino flux limits. We show that the maximum flux from extragalactic point sources is E^2(dN/dE) < 1.4 x 10^-9 (L_nu/2x10^43 erg/s)^1/3 GeV cm-^2 s^-1 from individual point sources with average neutrino luminosity per decade, L_nu. It depends only slightly on factors such as the inhomogeneous matter density distribution in the local universe, the luminosity distribution, and the assumed spectral index. The derived constraints are at least one order of magnitude below the current experimental limits from direct searches. Significant constraints are also derived on the number density of neutrino sources and on the total neutrino power density.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, and 2 table

    ESTIMATING RETURNS FROM PAST INVESTMENTS INTO BEEF CATTLE GENETICS RD&E IN AUSTRALIA

    This study aimed at estimating the costs and benefits of all beef cattle genetic improvement activity, across Australia, over the period 1970 to the present. The total cumulative Present Value (PV) of investments by industry, government and other agencies into selection, crossbreeding and grading up since 1963, and of imported genetics, was estimated to be 340m(in340m (in 2001 at a 7% discount rate). Using a suite of genetic evaluation models, farming systems models and an industry-level model, the cumulative PV of industry returns were estimated. Within-breed selection generated 944m;crossbreedinginsouthernAustralia944m; crossbreeding in southern Australia 255m; changing breed composition in southern Australia 62m;andchangingbreedcompositioninnorthernAustralia62m; and changing breed composition in northern Australia 8.1bn.     Cosmic-Ray Positrons: Are There Primary Sources?

    Cosmic rays at the Earth include a secondary component originating in collisions of primary particles with the diffuse interstellar gas. The secondary cosmic rays are relatively rare but carry important information on the Galactic propagation of the primary particles. The secondary component includes a small fraction of antimatter particles, positrons and antiprotons. In addition, positrons and antiprotons may also come from unusual sources and possibly provide insight into new physics. For instance, the annihilation of heavy supersymmetric dark matter particles within the Galactic halo could lead to positrons or antiprotons with distinctive energy signatures. With the High-Energy Antimatter Telescope (HEAT) balloon-borne instrument, we have measured the abundances of positrons and electrons at energies between 1 and 50 GeV. The data suggest that indeed a small additional antimatter component may be present that cannot be explained by a purely secondary production mechanism.     INCREASING PATIENT DEMAND FOR HOME MEDICINES REVIEWS: A MARKETING PLAN

    Campbell (2008)stated that “Consumer awareness of the program is of major concern” and concluded that “all stakeholders agreed that the Home Medicines Review (HMR) Program should be promoted more to consumers and carers.” Schwartzkoff et al (2004) recommended the implementation of a “national public awareness campaign to strengthen demand for HMR services from consumers who are likely to benefit”. Our research study (White & Clark, 2010; see poster 2) found that: There is very low awareness of HMRs amongst eligible non-recipient patients and carers There is an extremely high level of satisfaction amongst those who have experienced an HMR and very positive perceptions amongst those eligible patients and carers who have not had an HMR, after being informed of the service through the study.The goal of the marketing plan is to increase patient demand for HMRs by: 1. overcoming the lack of awareness, 2. facilitating patient self identification of eligibility and 3. instituting procedures that enhance the uptake of second and subsequent HMRs by HMR recipients where appropriate.     Decolonising indigenous social impact research using community-based methods

Indigenous procurement policies encourage the construction sector to provide new training, employment and business opportunities for Indigenous people suffering from economic and social disadvantage. However, the success of these policies is often distorted by the failure of policy evaluations to account for Indigenous perceptions of social value. Since these often differ markedly from non-Indigenous values, this can distort the allocation of funds to Indigenous communities and exacerbate the marginalisation of the communities these policies are meant to help. Drawing on theories of community-based research, this methodological paper seeks to reconceptualise approaches to measuring Indigenous social value in an Indigenous social procurement policy context. Working in partnership with a peak body for Aboriginal business in Australia, we have co-designed a novel approach to Indigenous social impact research that recognises the legitimacy of Indigenous perspectives when investigating the social value Indigenous procurement policies create. We argue that culturally appropriate focus groups (yarning discussion groups) are appropriate in Indigenous social impact research because they prioritise Indigenous people's experiences of Indigenous procurement policies, rather than focusing on simplistic policy targets. As a method that promotes community involvement in social impact research to define how social value is perceived, yarning discussion groups have significant implications for future research seeking to represent Indigeonus perspectives of social value. It is concluded the approach developed here can be operationalised in the field to better understand the nature of Indigenous social value and the impact created by Indigenous procurement policies in Australia and other countries with disadvantaged Indigenous populations

    From attosecond to zeptosecond coherent control of free-electron wave functions using semi-infinite light fields

    Light-electron interaction in empty space is the seminal ingredient for free-electron lasers and also for controlling electron beams to dynamically investigate materials and molecules. Pushing the coherent control of free electrons by light to unexplored timescales, below the attosecond, would enable unprecedented applications in light-assisted electron quantum circuits and diagnostics at extremely small timescales, such as those governing intramolecular electronic motion and nuclear phenomena. We experimentally demonstrate attosecond coherent manipulation of the electron wave function in a transmission electron microscope, and show that it can be pushed down to the zeptosecond regime with existing technology. We make a relativistic pulsed electron beam interact in free space with an appropriately synthesized semi-infinite light field generated by two femtosecond laser pulses reflected at the surface of a mirror and delayed by fractions of the optical cycle. The amplitude and phase of the resulting coherent oscillations of the electron states in energymomentum space are mapped via momentum-resolved ultrafast electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The experimental results are in full agreement with our theoretical framework for light-electron interaction, which predicts access to the zeptosecond timescale by combining semi-infinite X-ray fields with free electrons.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure

    Neutrino Spin Transitions and the Violation of the Equivalence Principle

    The violation of the equivalence principle (VEP) causing neutrino oscillations is of current interest. We study here the possibility of not only flavor oscillation but spin flavor oscillation of ultra high energy (∌ \sim 1 PeV) neutrinos emanating from AGN due to VEP and due to the presence of a large magnetic field (∌ \sim 1 Tesla) in AGN. In particular we look at the resonance spin flavor conversion driven by the AGN potential.
