    Sonographic evaluation of the association between calcific tendinopathy and rotator cuff tear: a case-controlled comparison

    Objectives: To compare the incidence of rotator cuff (RC) tears on shoulder ultrasounds of patients with RC calcific tendinopathy (CaT) to that of a control group without CaT. Method: In this retrospective case-control study, 50 shoulder ultrasounds of patients with CaT were compared independently by 2 musculoskeletal radiologists to 50 patients from a control group without CaT to catalog the number and type of RC tears. RC tears in the CaT group were further characterized based on location, into tears in the specific tendon(s) containing calcium versus all tendon tears. Results: RC tears were diagnosed in 38% (19/50) of the control group (16 full-thickness) as compared to 22% (11/50) with CaT (6 full-thickness). The fewer full-thickness tears in the CaT group (12%, 6 of 50) compared to that in the control group (32%, 16 of 50) was statistically significant (P = 0.016, odds ratio 0.29). Only 7 of the 11 tears in the CaT group were in a calcium-containing tendon (3 full-thickness). The fewer calcium-containing tendon tears compared to tears in the control group was also statistically significant (P = 0.006, odds ratio 0.27). Furthermore, the fewer full-thickness calcium-containing tendon tears (6%, 3/50) compared to full-thickness tears in the control group (32%, 16/50) were yet more statistically significant (P = 0.001, odds ratio 0.14). Conclusions: In patients with shoulder pain and CaT, we observed a decreased number of RC tears and especially calcium-containing tendon tears, as compared to similar demographic patients with shoulder pain but without CaT. Key Points • Patients with rotator cuff calcific tendinopathy have few rotator cuff tears, especially full-thickness tears, compared to a control group without calcific tendinopathy. • The tendons containing the calcium hydroxyapatite deposition were the least likely to have a rotator cuff tear. • Future studies could evaluate if calcium hydroxyapatite deposition provides a protective mechanism against rotator cuff tears. • Musculoskeletal ultrasound is more sensitive than MRI in the evaluation of rotator cuff calcific tendinopathy

    Selection in the Presence of Implicit Bias: The Advantage of Intersectional Constraints

    In selection processes such as hiring, promotion, and college admissions, implicit bias toward socially-salient attributes such as race, gender, or sexual orientation of candidates is known to produce persistent inequality and reduce aggregate utility for the decision maker. Interventions such as the Rooney Rule and its generalizations, which require the decision maker to select at least a specified number of individuals from each affected group, have been proposed to mitigate the adverse effects of implicit bias in selection. Recent works have established that such lower-bound constraints can be very effective in improving aggregate utility in the case when each individual belongs to at most one affected group. However, in several settings, individuals may belong to multiple affected groups and, consequently, face more extreme implicit bias due to this intersectionality. We consider independently drawn utilities and show that, in the intersectional case, the aforementioned non-intersectional constraints can only recover part of the total utility achievable in the absence of implicit bias. On the other hand, we show that if one includes appropriate lower-bound constraints on the intersections, almost all the utility achievable in the absence of implicit bias can be recovered. Thus, intersectional constraints can offer a significant advantage over a reductionist dimension-by-dimension non-intersectional approach to reducing inequality.Comment: This is the full version of a paper accepted for presentation in ACM FAccT 202

    Vertical Distribution of DTPA Extractable Micronutrients in Two Distinct Soils of Central India under Diverse Land-uses

    Crop productivity and health of human and animals are greatly influenced by availability of micronutrients in the soil. Understanding the nature and extent of deficiency problems of these nutrients is useful in improving the fertilizer recommendations by inclusion of micronutrients in the fertilization schedule. This investigation carried out to evaluate the vertical variability in status of DTPA extractable micronutrients in two contrast soil types (medium black and alluvial soils) under different land uses. Soil sample were collected in triplicate from six distinct land use practices (forest, uncultivated, soybean-wheat, rice-wheat, soybean-chickpea and maize-wheat system) from Jabalpur (medium black soil) and Gwalior (alluvial soil) region at four depths (0-15, 15-30, 30-45 and 45-60 cm) after harvest of rabi season crops during 2020-21. Statistical analysis of data was done using factorial RBD considering soil type (medium black soil and alluvial soil) as factor A and land use practices as factor B. It was found that contents of DTPA extractable micronutrients (zinc, copper, iron and manganese) were found maximum under forest land in both the soils at 0-15 cm depth and decreased with increase in soil depths. It was also noted that under different land use practices DTPA extractable Zn, Mn and Cu were higher in medium black soil as compared to alluvial soil, however available Fe found higher in alluvial soil across the soil depths. The results clearly indicated that Zn, Fe, Mn was significantly affected by different soil type except Cu are non significant.  Zn, Cu, Mn was significantly affected by different land use practices but Fe are non significant

    Ruminal Lipid A Analysis by Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry

    Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are cell wall components from Gram-negative bacteria and are composed of three covalently linked regions: the O-antigen, the core oligosaccharide, and the lipid A moiety, which carries most of their endotoxic activity. The objective of this study was to isolate and compare the lipid A structures from ruminal LPS derived from total mixed ration (TMR)- and pasture-fed cows, by using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Ruminal bacteria were collected from two rumen-cannulated Holstein cows; one fed a TMR (60:40, forage–concentrate) and the other pasture fed. The representativeness of each sample was validated by comparing the rumen microbiome from the cows in our study to the core rumen microbiome from the previous literature. Lipopolysaccharides from each respective sample were extracted with a phenol–water extraction procedure and purified via ultracentrifugation. To isolate lipid A from the core and O-antigen, pure ruminal LPS samples were hydrolyzed with acetic acid. Lipid A derived from the TMR-fed cow potentially exhibited a tetra-acylated structure, whereas lipid A derived from the pasture-fed cow potentially exhibited a penta-acylated lipid A structure. Both samples were quantified using limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) assay and exhibited low endotoxic activity, consistent with the MALDI-TOF MS observations. Results indicate that the lipid A acylation pattern differs between diets, and that ruminal bacteria express solely under-acylated lipid A structures contrary to hexa-acylated lipid A, typically expressed by bacteria such as E. coli

However, overfeeding MgO may increase feeding costs, whereas the effects of alternative sources of Mg on ruminal fermentation are not well known. Moreover, it is still unclear if Mg supplementation influences the effects of bicarbonate-based buffers on ruminal fermentation. We aimed to evaluate the effect of Mg source on ruminal fermentation with diets formulated to a final concentration of 0.25% Mg, and to determine if the effect of sodium sesquicarbonate as a buffer varies with the source of Mg. We used 8 fermentors in a duplicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments, by combining 2 factors: (1) Mg source: using either MgO or an alternative source consisting of a blend of CaMg(OH)4 and CaMg(CO3)2 (BLN) and (2) sodium sesquicarbonate buffer inclusion, at 0 or 0.6% of dry matter intake. Based on preliminary tests of reactivity, we hypoth esized that BLN plus buffer would allow for greater ruminal pH, acetate molar proportion, and NDF digestibility than diets with MgO or without buffer. Four 10-d periods were completed, where the last 3 d were used for pH measurements and collection of samples for volatile fatty acids (VFA), ammonia (NH3-N), Mg solubility, N metabolism, and nutrient digestibility. Effects of Mg source (source), sodium sesquicarbonate inclusion (buffer), and their interaction (source × buffer) were tested with the MIXED procedure of SAS (SAS Institute Inc.). We did not find an effect of Mg source on ruminal fermentation variables; however, concentration of soluble Mg in ruminal fluid was greater for MgO compared with BLN. On the other hand, buffer supplementation increased average ruminal pH, acetate molar proportion, and branched-chain VFA molar proportion; tended to increase NDF digestibility; and decreased both area under the curve and time below pH 6.0. An interaction of source × buffer was found for propionate, butyrate, and NH3-N, the first one decreasing and the 2 others increasing only when buffer was supplemented to the BLN diet. Our results indicate that supplementing Mg with either MgO or BLN promotes similar ruminal fermentation in diets with total concentration of 0.25% Mg.     Megasphaera elsdenii and Saccharomyces Cerevisiae as direct fed microbials during an in vitro acute ruminal acidosis challenge

    This study aimed to evaluate the efects of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Megasphaera elsdenii as direct fed microbials (DFM) in beef cattle fnishing diets to alleviate acute ruminal lactic acidosis in vitro. A dual-fow continuous culture system was used. Treatments were a Control, no DFM; YM1, S. cerevisiae and M. elsdenii strain 1; YM2, S. cerevisiae and M. elsdenii strain 2; and YMM, S. cerevisiae and half of the doses of M. elsdenii strain 1 and strain 2. Each DFM dose had a concentration of 1 × ­108 CFU/mL. Four experimental periods lasted 11 days each. For the non-acidotic days (day 1–8), diet contained 50:50 forage to concentrate ratio. For the challenge days (day 9–11), diet contained 10:90 forage to concentrate ratio. Acute ruminal acidosis was successfully established. No diferences in pH, d-, l-, or total lactate were observed among treatments. Propionic acid increased in treatments containing DFM. For N metabolism, the YMM treatment decreased protein degradation and microbial protein synthesis. No treatment efects were observed on NH3–N concentration; however, efciency of N utilization by ruminal bacteria was greater than 80% during the challenge period and NH3–N concentration was reduced to approximately 2 mg/dL as the challenge progressed.UCR::Vicerrectoría de Docencia::Ciencias Agroalimentarias::Facultad de Ciencias Agroalimentarias::Escuela de Zootecni

    Effects of cashew nut-shell extract and monensin on microbial fermentation in a dual-flow continuous culture

    The objective of this study was to compare cashew nut-shell extract (CNSE) to monensin and evaluate changes in in vitro mixed ruminal microorganism fermentation, nutrient digestibility, and microbial nitrogen outflow. Treatments were randomly assigned to 8 fermenters in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with 4 experimental periods of 10 d (7 d for diet adaptation and 3 d for sample collection). Basal diets contained 43.5:56.5 forage: concentrate ratio and each fermenter was fed 106 g of DM/d divided equally between 2 feeding times. Treatments were control (CON, basal diet without additives), 2.5 μM monensin (MON), 100 ppm CNSE granule (CNSE100), and 200 ppm CNSE granule (CNSE200). On d 8 to10, samples were collected for pH, lactate, NH3-N, volatile fatty acids, mixed protozoa counts, organic matter (OM), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility. Data were analyzed with the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS. Orthogonal contrasts were used to test the effects of (1) ADD (CON vs. MON, CNSE100, and CNSE200); (2) MCN (MON vs. CNSE100 and CNSE200); and (3) DOSE (CNSE100 vs. CNSE200). Significance was declared at P ≤ 0.05 and tendencies at 0.05 < P ≤ 0.10. We observed that butyrate concentration in all treatments was lower compared with CON and the concentration for MON was lower compared with CNSE treatments. Protozoal population in all treatments was lower compared with CON. No effects were observed for pH, lactate, NH3-N, total volatile fatty acids, OM, or N utilization. Within the 24 h pool, protozoal generation time, tended to be lower, while NDF digestibility tended to be greater in response to all additives. Furthermore, the microbial N flow, and the efficiency of N use tended to be lower for the monensin treatment compared with CNSE treatments.
