Variations on Kaluza-Klein Cosmology
We investigate the cosmological consequences of having quantum fields living
in a space with compactified dimensions. We will show that the equation of
state is not modified by topological effects and so the dynamics of the
universe remains as it is in the infinite volume limit. On the contrary the
thermal history of the universe depends on terms that are associated with
having non-trivial topology. In the conclusions we discuss some issues about
the relationship between the non-critical string-inspired cosmology and
the result obtained with matter given by a hot massless field in S^{1}\times

Avoiding Pandemic Fears in the Subway and Conquering the Platypus.
Metagenomics is increasingly used not just to show patterns of microbial diversity but also as a culture-independent method to detect individual organisms of intense clinical, epidemiological, conservation, forensic, or regulatory interest. A widely reported metagenomic study of the New York subway suggested that the pathogens Yersinia pestis and Bacillus anthracis were part of the "normal subway microbiome." In their article in mSystems, Hsu and collaborators (mSystems 1(3):e00018-16, 2016, http://dx.doi.org/10.1128/mSystems.00018-16) showed that microbial communities on transit surfaces in the Boston subway system are maintained from a metapopulation of human skin commensals and environmental generalists and that reanalysis of the New York subway data with appropriate methods did not detect the pathogens. We note that commonly used software pipelines can produce results that lack prima facie validity (e.g., reporting widespread distribution of notorious endemic species such as the platypus or the presence of pathogens) but that appropriate use of inclusion and exclusion sets can avoid this issue
Effect of preparation conditions on the polymorphism and transport properties of lanthanum molybdates
In this work, La6MoO12-based compounds were investigated as part of a new family of materials very competitive as hydrogen separation membranes [1,2].
La5.4MoO11.1 was synthesized by the freeze-drying precursor method and the calcination conditions were optimized in order to obtain single phases. Several cooling rates were applied and different polymorphs were obtained: a simple cubic fluorite symmetry (Fm-3m) for the sample cooled by quenching, and two different rhombohedral (R-3) space groups for the samples cooled at 50 ºC•min-1 and 0.5 ºC•min-1 (see Figure below). For the quenched sample, the Rietveld refinement was satisfactory in a Fm-3m space group. For the other two compositions no structural model was available and were indexed in a R-3 space group, however some small reflections were not given any intensity by the model used. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the presence of superstructures for those samples. All ceramic materials were obtained with relative densities close to 100% after sintering at 1500 ºC. Stability studies demonstrated that all three polymorphs were stable in oxidizing and reducing conditions at 800 ºC for 48 hours.
The three samples present a significant proton contribution to the conductivity at temperatures lower than 800 ºC. These results were confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis. The highest conductivity values were observed for the samples prepared by quenching. The three polymorphs display a small p-type electronic contribution to the overall conductivity in oxidizing conditions and n-type electronic one in very reducing conditions, much more significant for the samples cooled by quenching and at 50 ºC•min-1.Universidad de Málaga. Entropy Rate of Diffusion Processes on Complex Networks
The concept of entropy rate for a dynamical process on a graph is introduced.
We study diffusion processes where the node degrees are used as a local
information by the random walkers. We describe analitically and numerically how
the degree heterogeneity and correlations affect the diffusion entropy rate. In
addition, the entropy rate is used to characterize complex networks from the
real world. Our results point out how to design optimal diffusion processes
that maximize the entropy for a given network structure, providing a new
theoretical tool with applications to social, technological and communication
networks.Comment: 4 pages (APS format), 3 figures, 1 tabl
Millimeter polarisation of the protoplanetary nebula OH 231.8+4.2: A follow-up study with CARMA
In order to investigate the characteristics and influence of the magnetic
field in evolved stars, we performed a follow-up investigation of our previous
submillimeter analysis of the proto-planetary nebula (PPN) OH 231.8+4.2 (Sabin
et al. 2014), this time at 1.3mm with the CARMA facility in polarisation mode
for the purpose of a multi-scale analysis. OH 231.8+4.2 was observed at ~2.5"
resolution and we detected polarised emission above the 3-sigma threshold (with
a mean polarisation fraction of 3.5 %). The polarisation map indicates an
overall organised magnetic field within the nebula. The main finding in this
paper is the presence of a structure mostly compatible with an ordered toroidal
component that is aligned with the PPN's dark lane. We also present some
alternative magnetic field configuration to explain the structure observed.
These data complete our previous SMA submillimeter data for a better
investigation and understanding of the magnetic field structure in OH

Towards the characterization of individual users through Web analytics
We perform an analysis of the way individual users navigate in the Web. We
focus primarily in the temporal patterns of they return to a given page. The
return probability as a function of time as well as the distribution of time
intervals between consecutive visits are measured and found to be independent
of the level of activity of single users. The results indicate a rich variety
of individual behaviors and seem to preclude the possibility of defining a
characteristic frequency for each user in his/her visits to a single site.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. To appear in Proceeding of Complex'0
