Garlic and Onion Attenuates Vascular Inflammation and Oxidative Stress in Fructose-Fed Rats

This study evaluates the antioxidant and the anti-inflammatory properties of garlic (G) and onion (O) in fructose-fed rats (FFR). Thirty-day-old male Wistar rats were assigned to control (C), F (10% fructose in drinking water), F+T (tempol 1 mM as control antioxidant), F+G, and F+O. Aqueous G and O extracts were administered orally in doses of 150 and 400 mg/kg/d respectively, and along with tempol, were given during the last 8 weeks of a 14-week period. At the end of the study, FFR had developed insulin resistance, aortic NADPH oxidase activity, increased SBP, plasma TBARS and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) expression in mesenteric arteries, and a decrease in heart endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). Garlic and onion administration to F rats reduced oxidative stress, increased eNOS activity, and also attenuated VCAM-1 expression. These results provide new evidence showing the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect of these vegetables

The effectiveness of a health promotion with group intervention by clinical trial. Study protocol

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The promotion of health and the interventions in community health continue to be one of the pending subjects of our health system. The most prevalent health problems (cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes...) are for the most part related to life habits. We propose a holistic and integral approach as the best option for tackling behavior and its determinants. The research team has elaborated the necessary educational material to realize group teaching, which we call "Health Workshops". The goal of the present study is to evaluate the effectiveness of these Health Workshops in the following terms: Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL), incorporate and maintain a balanced diet, do physical activity regularly, maintain risk factors such as tension, weight, cholesterol within normal limits and diminish cardiovascular risk.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>Controlled and random clinical testing, comparing a group of persons who have participated in the Health Workshops with a control group of similar characteristics who have not participated in the Health Workshops.</p> <p>Field of study: the research is being done in Health Centers of the city of Barcelona, Spain.</p> <p>Population studied: The group is composed of 108 persons that are actually doing the Health Workshops, and 108 that are not and form the control group. They are assigned at random to one group or the other.</p> <p>Data Analysis: With Student's t-distribution test to compare the differences between numerical variables or their non parametric equivalent if the variable does not comply with the criteria of normality. (Kolmogorov-Smirnof test). Chi-square test to compare the differences between categorical variables and the Logistic Regression Model to analyze different meaningful variables by dichotomous analysis related to the intervention.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The Health Workshop proposed in the present study constitutes an innovative approach in health promotion, placing the emphasis on the person's self responsibility for his/her own health.</p> <p>The rhythm of a weekly session during 8 weeks with recommended activities to put into practice, as well as the support of the group is an opportunity to incorporate healthy habits and make a commitment to self-care. La vida constituye un valor superior y es la base de sustentación para todos los demás valores.La muerte como episodio final de la vida, es un evento tan natural y frecuente como el nacimiento. Como fenómeno biológico y como proceso clínico debería tener su lugar en la formación y en el bagaje de conocimientos del médico. Assessing the importance of human activities for the establishment of the invasive Poa annua in Antarctica

Because of its harsh environmental conditions and remoteness, Antarctica is often considered to be at low risk of plant invasion. However, an increasing number of reports have shown the presence and spread of non-native plants in Antarctica; it is therefore important to study which factors control the invasion process in this ecosystem. Here, we assessed the role of different human activities on the presence and abundance of the invasive Poa annua. In addition, we performed a reciprocal transplant experiment in the field, and a manipulative experiment of germination with P. annua and the natives Colobanthus quitensis and Deschampsia antarctica, in order to unravel the effects of physical soil disturbance on the establishment and survival of P. annua. We found a positive correlation between abundance of P. annua and level of soil disturbance, and that survival of P. annua was 33% higher in sites with disturbed soil than non-disturbed. Finally, we found that disturbance conditions increased germination for P. annua, whereas for native species germination in experimentally disturbed soil was either unchanged or reduced compared to undisturbed soil. Our results indicate that human activities that modify abiotic soil characteristics could play an important role in the abundance of this invasive species. If the current patterns of human activities are maintained in Antarctica, the establishment success and spread of P. annua could increase, negatively affecting native flora

Fusariosis invasiva: reporte de tres casos en Perú

Las especies de Fusarium son un grupo de hongos que causan infecciones superficiales, localmente invasivas y enfermedad diseminada, que ocurren principalmente en huéspedes inmunocomprometidos, y ocasionalmente en individuos inmunocompetentes. Presentamos tres casos que ponen en manifiesto tres diferentes formas clínicas de la enfermedad por Fusarium spp., que afectaron diversos tipos de pacientes (pacientes con malignidad hematológica, enfermedad renal crónica en diálisis peritoneal y post-quirúrgico por patología osteoarticular), cada una con características propias que ameritan su discusión. Estos casos ponen de manifiesto diferentes formas clínicas de fusariosis invasiva causadas por especies del complejo Fusarium solani en pacientes con diferentes patologías y manejo terapéutico que podrían ser factores de riesgo para el desarrollo de la enfermedad. El reconocimiento clínico de la Fusariosis, no solo en pacientes oncohematólogicos, junto con un diagnóstico y tratamiento oportuno contribuyen al éxito del tratamiento y a una reducción en la mortalidad
