Tandem mass spectrometric analysis of a mixture of isobars using the survival yield technique.

International audienceCollision induced dissociation tandem mass spectrometry experiments were performed to unequivocally separate compounds from an isobaric mixture of two products. The Survival Yield curve was obtained and is shown to consist in a linear combination of the curves corresponding to the two components separately. For such a mixture, a plateau appears on the diagram in lieu of the continuous decrease expected allowing for the structural study of the two components separately. The width of the plateau critically relates to the fragmentation parameters of the two molecular ions, which need to be sufficiently different structurally for the plateau to be observed. However, at constant fragmentation parameters, we have observed the width significantly increases at large m/z. This makes the separation more and more efficient as isobars have larger m/z and the technique complementary to those applicable at low m/z only. We have observed that the vertical position of the plateau relates linearly to the relative concentration of the two compounds that may be useful for quantification. Repeatability was estimated at 2% on a quadrupole ion trap. An advantage of using survival yield curves only, is that a priori knowledge of the respective fragmentation patterns of the two isobars becomes unnecessary. Consequently, similar performances are obtained if fragments are isobaric, which is also demonstrated in our study. The critical case of reverse peptides, at low m/z and similar fragmentation parameters, is also presented as a limitation of the method

Caractérisations physico-mécaniques de sciages de 1er choix en vue d'applications structurelles

National audienceLe matériau bois présente une grande variabilité de ses propriétés mécaniques. Lacaractérisation de la résistance à rupture d'une essence sur de multiples essais permetl'identification d'une distribution des mesures souvent proche d'une loi normale. Les normeseuropéennes de construction (Eurocodes) fixent la valeur de résistance au fractile à 5 %inférieur comme valeur caractéristique de résistance. Cette résistance est suffisante pour desusages bas de gamme en charpente. Cependant les 5% au-dessus du fractile supérieur sontnettement sous valorisés. Il s’agit de pièces de bois quasiment sans défauts facilementdétectables par les outils actuels de production industrielle, et possédant des propriétésmécaniques très proches de celles du bois dit parfait.Un des enjeux pour l’avenir est donc de trier, qualifier et tracer ces sciages de bois de hautequalité pour valoriser la ressource dans des usages à hautes performances structurelles. Plusparticulièrement les essences de pins sont sous utilisées dans la conception d'élémentsstructurels malgré une ressource forestière abondante. La démarche mise en oeuvre au coursde cette thèse permettra de répondre à cet objectif sur différentes essences de pin pouraméliorer la valeur ajoutée produite, grâce à de nouveaux usages

Signa et tituli dans l’épigraphie de la cité de Vienne au Haut-Empire

Sur la base des Inscriptions Latines du territoire de Vienne (ILN Vienne, 935 inscriptions), les auteurs ont relevé 22 textes pouvant mis être mis en relation avec des sculptures (mention dans le texte du terme latin désignant une « statue » ou traces d’accrochage d’une statue). Après avoir examiné les différents termes employés et leur polyvalence, cet article analyse les différents monuments où se dressaient ces statues, ce qu’elles représentaient (dieux, notables), leur statut juridique et l’origine des financements. L’ensemble des textes étudiés est fourni en annexe.On the basis of the Vienna civitas corpus of Latin inscriptions (ILN Vienne 935 inscriptions), the authors noted 22 texts that can be related to statuary (mention in the text of the word which designates a statue or fittings for a statue). The various terms being used and their various meanings are examined in this article then the different monuments where these statues have been erected are described altogether with the subjects represented (gods, local leaders), the legal status and origin of funds. Cutting Forces in basic and real life wood machining processes review, COST Action E35 2004-2008: Wood machining - Micromechanics and fracture

International audienceThe data available in the literature concerning wood cutting forces permit to build models or to simulate the main wood machining processes (milling, sawing, peeling etc.). This approach contributes to a better understanding of formation of wood surfaces and chips and the data may be helpful to optimize cutting geometry, reduce tool wear, improve tool material, and to size tool-machines. The models may also be useful for industrial application in two ways: (1) providing data to optimise the settings for a given operation (batch approach) and (2) building predictive models that could be the basis of an online control systems for the machining processes (interactive approach). A prerequisite for this is that numerous machining tests on different wood materials are performed based on experiences with different kind of tools and experimental devices. With potential industrial applications in focus, the emphasis of this review was on the wood peeling process, which is a very demanding special case of wood cutting. Though not so many industrial machines are equipped with expensive force sensors, there is a lot of high quality information available about cutting forces which may be useful to improve the scientific or technologic knowledge in wood machining. Alternative parameters, such as vibration or sound measurements, appear to be promising substitutes in the praxis, particularly to feed online control systems of any wood cutting process
