Journey in Thought – Hannah Arendt

Rée concentrates on turning points in the intellectual lives of great thinkers, exploring their ideas and positioning them in time and place. His journey to Israel “in the footsteps of the philosopher and political theorist Hannah Arendt” took him to Jerusalem, from where he returned with a unique and lively documentary radio programme, thus adding a valuable contribution to the debate on Arendt and her book Eichmann in Jerusalem. Oralism: a sign of the times? The contest for deaf communication in education provision in late nineteenth-century Scotland

Disability history is a diverse field. In focussing upon children within deaf education in late nineteenth-century Scotland, this essay reflects some of that diversity. In 1880, the International Congress on the Education of the Deaf in Milan stipulated that speech should have ‘preference’ over signs in the education of deaf children. The mode of achieving this, however, effectively banned sign language. Endeavours to teach deaf children to articulate were not new, but this decision placed pressures on deaf institutions to favour the oral system of deaf communication over other methods. In Scotland efforts were made to adopt oralism, and yet educators were faced with the reality that this was not good educational practice for most pupils. This article will consider responses of Scottish educators of deaf children from the 1870s until the beginning of the twentieth century

[قام جناثان ري أستاذ الفلسفة بمقابلة مع إدوارد سعيد أستاذ الأدب الإنجليزي والمقارن والمفكر الفلسطيني المعروف ، في القناة الرابعة في التليفزيون البريطاني، في برنامج يدعى حديث الحريات في يونيو (حزيران) ١٩٩٢ ۰ وهذه مقتطفات مترجمة عن الأصل الكامل المنشور لأول مرة في صفحات هذا العدد بالإنجليزية: في سؤال عن دلالة مفهوم الحقوق بالنسبة للتجربة الفلسطينية رد سعيد قائلاً: إننا في وضع منفرد لكوننا شعباً يلفي أعداؤه حقيقة وجوده٠ فبالنسبة لنا يعني مفهوم الحقوق أن نكون كياناً جماعياً واحداً عوضاً عن مجموعة من اللاجئين وأفراد بدون دولة ومواطنين في دول أخرى٠ ويلّح هذا المفهوم علينا، حيث أن هدفنا الرئيسي منذ بداية نضالنا ضد الصهيونية وبالتالي ضد إسرائيل هو أن ننجز الخطوة الأولى٠ فمازلنا بعيدين عن حقوقنا القومية ... وفيما يعرف بمحادثات السلام لا نجد عند الأمريكيين أو الإسرائليين جملة واحدة تشير تقرير المصير أو حقوقنا القومية٠ وفي سؤال عن الموقف من السجال الدائر في الساحة الثقافية في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية حول ما يسمى بال مقرَّر الدراسي أي النصوص المقررة على الطلبة والمهيمنة على المناهج الجامعية، يقول سعيد: هناك مناظرة شيقة وهامة حول ماذا يفعل المهمشون والمقهورون... في مواجهة المقرَّر؟ أعتقد أن البدائل المطروحة هشة بشكل عام٠ فلو قاطع الملونون قراءة أدب البيض مثلاً ، أو قاطعت النساء قراءة ما يكتبه الرجال ... فهذا سيؤدي إلى استبدال مقرر بمقرر آخر٠ وأنا لا أتعاطف مع هذا لأنه سيحكم علينا بهامشة جديدة ... إن البديل الآخر هو محاولة فهم عملية بناء المقرر واللغايات التي يخدمها٠ فيبدو لي أن تاريخ الإمبريالية و تاريخ الاستعمار و تاريخ القهر ... كله مبني على القطعية والإبعاد٠ وأسوأ أمر ـ أخلاقياً وسياسياً ـ هو السماح باستمرارية القطيعة وعدم فهم نفيضها: الرابطة ... إن ما يهمني هو الكشف عن علاقات الترابط في الكل ... وهذا في نظري مهمة كبيرة: إدراك الكلية عوضاً عن جزئيات منها ٠
