    Managing Knowledge in a Distributed Decision Making Context

    This paper considers the role of electronic communication in the creation and distribution of knowledge, and in particular, the creation and sharing of personalised knowledge. Personalised knowledge or "intellectual capital" is perhaps a least understood but most important asset of modern organisations. This paper reveals the creation and sharing of personalised knowledge in a network organisation. The network organisation investigated in this paper relies on electronic communication in a distributed decision making context to leverage the skills and intellect of its key professionals. This paper investigates electronic group meetings that take place on this electronic social space to analyse key processes of knowledge creation. Implications for managing distributed personalised knowledge are discussed and conclusions drawn with respect to the key decision support systems functionalities required for managing knowledge in situations where decision making is distributed and takes place on an electronic social space.Personalised Knowledge;c entrality;communication infrastructure;distributed decision support;electronic social space;prestige

    Behaviour of steel end plate bolted beam-to-column joints

    This paper presents a numerical investigation into moment-rotation behaviour of extended, flush, and partial depth end-plate joints. Two types of steel beam-to-column joints are modelled: I-beam (IPE) to H-column (HEB) and PFC-beam (UPE) to SHS-column. The joints are designed as a single cantilever beam-to-column joint configuration. The connection details are in accordance with Eurocode 3 part 1-8 and SCI guides P358 (Simple joints) and P398 (Moment joints). Three-dimensional finite element modelling of the joints is car-ried out using ABAQUS. The numerical results are validated against experiments. Both material and geo-metric nonlinearities are considered. All joints are classified according to their stiffness as per Eurocode 3. The failure modes of different joint configurations are determined and compared with the experiments. The key contribution of this paper comes from stiffness analysis of the joints, characterisation of the joints as per EC3 and modelling nonlinear behaviour of the joints

    MODLEACH: A Variant of LEACH for WSNs

    Wireless sensor networks are appearing as an emerging need for mankind. Though, Such networks are still in research phase however, they have high potential to be applied in almost every field of life. Lots of research is done and a lot more is awaiting to be standardized. In this work, cluster based routing in wireless sensor networks is studied precisely. Further, we modify one of the most prominent wireless sensor network's routing protocol "LEACH" as modified LEACH (MODLEACH) by introducing \emph{efficient cluster head replacement scheme} and \emph{dual transmitting power levels}. Our modified LEACH, in comparison with LEACH out performs it using metrics of cluster head formation, through put and network life. Afterwards, hard and soft thresholds are implemented on modified LEACH (MODLEACH) that boast the performance even more. Finally a brief performance analysis of LEACH, Modified LEACH (MODLEACH), MODLEACH with hard threshold (MODLEACHHT) and MODLEACH with soft threshold (MODLEACHST) is undertaken considering metrics of throughput, network life and cluster head replacements.Comment: IEEE 8th International Conference on Broadband and Wireless Computing, Communication and Applications (BWCCA'13), Compiegne, Franc

    Vacancy defect reconstruction and its effect on electron transport in Si-C nanotubes

    We investigate the vacancy defect reconstruction and its effect on I-V characteristics in a (4, 0) zigzag and (5, 5) armchair silicon-carbide nanotubes (SiCNTs) by applying self consistent non-equilibrium Green’s function formalism in combination with the density-functional theory to a two probe molecular junction constructed from SiCNTs. The results show that single vacancies and di-vacancies in SiCNTs have different reconstructions. A single vacancy when optimized, reconstructs into a 5-1DB configuration in both zigzag and armchair SiCNTs, and a di-vacancy reconstructs into a 5-8-5 configuration in zigzag and into a 5-2DB configuration in armchair SiCNTs. Introduction of vacancy increases the band gap of (4, 0) metallic SiCNT and decreases the bandgap of (5, 5) semiconducting SiCNT, bias voltage dependent current characteristic show reduction in overall current in metallic SiCNT and an increase in overall current in semiconducting SiCNT.     Analysis of the Pathomechanism and Treatment of Migraines Related to the Role of the Neuropeptide CGRP

    Migraines are a type of headache that specifically act on only one side of the head, although about 30% of patients with migraines may experience a bilateral headache. Migraines are brain disorders that typically involve issues of sensory processing taking place in the brainstem. Possible causation has been linked to blood vessels, blood flow, and oxygen levels in the brain. Migraines can be described in three phases, all of which have a common neuropeptide known as the calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP). CGRP increases in plasma have been linked to migraine headaches, and specific treatment plans have been tailored to account for this. CGRP is a vasodilator that causes dilation of cranial blood vessels and can lead to possible neurogenic inflammation in the periphery of its release while activating the pain pathway in the brainstem. The primary treatment for migraines is currently drugs from the triptan family and NSAIDs, as well as prophylactic drugs including antiepileptic drugs, beta-blockers, and Ca2+ channel blockers. This literature review will expand on this information regarding migraines, specifically discussing the pathophysiology, treatment, and CGRP relation to migraines through a summary of the compilation of various studies conducted. Through this literature review, it will then become apparent as to what research should be conducted to further the field of study on migraines based on what related topics have not been currently explored in depth in other studies
