New Structure In The Shapley Supercluster
We present new radial velocities for 189 galaxies in a 91 sq. deg region of
the Shapley supercluster measured with the FLAIR-II spectrograph on the UK
Schmidt Telescope. The data reveal two sheets of galaxies linking the major
concentrations of the supercluster. The supercluster is not flattened in
Declination as was suggested previously and it may be at least 30 percent
larger than previously thought with a correspondingly larger contribution to

Fault-tolerant onboard digital information switching and routing for communications satellites
The NASA Lewis Research Center is developing an information-switching processor for future meshed very-small-aperture terminal (VSAT) communications satellites. The information-switching processor will switch and route baseband user data onboard the VSAT satellite to connect thousands of Earth terminals. Fault tolerance is a critical issue in developing information-switching processor circuitry that will provide and maintain reliable communications services. In parallel with the conceptual development of the meshed VSAT satellite network architecture, NASA designed and built a simple test bed for developing and demonstrating baseband switch architectures and fault-tolerance techniques. The meshed VSAT architecture and the switching demonstration test bed are described, and the initial switching architecture and the fault-tolerance techniques that were developed and tested are discussed
Redshifts in the Southern Abell Redshift Survey Clusters. I. The Data
The Southern Abell Redshift Survey contains 39 clusters of galaxies with
redshifts in the range 0.0 < z < 0.31 and a median redshift depth of z =
0.0845. SARS covers the region 0 21h (while
avoiding the LMC and SMC) with b > 40. Cluster locations were chosen from the
Abell and Abell-Corwin-Olowin catalogs while galaxy positions were selected
from the Automatic Plate Measuring Facility galaxy catalog with
extinction-corrected magnitudes in the range 15 <= b_j < 19. SARS utilized the
Las Campanas 2.5 m duPont telescope, observing either 65 or 128 objects
concurrently over a 1.5 sq deg field. New redshifts for 3440 galaxies are
reported in the fields of these 39 clusters of galaxies.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical

WQ 2059-247: An unusual high redshift X-ray cluster
X-ray, optical, and radio observations of a high redshift, Bautz-Morgan type I cluster of galaxies are reported. The cD galaxy contains a powerful, flat spectrum radio source coincident with the possibly stellar nucleus. The cluster is an extremely luminous X-ray source; however, unlike nearby luminous X-ray clusters the X-ray spectrum appears to be rather soft. Two possible interpretations of the soruces are suggested: either the intracluster gas is much cooler in high redshift clusters because they are less relaxed, or the X-ray and radio emissions from WQ 2059-247 are the result of a non thermal QSO/BL Lac type object in the nucleus of the cD
V-Shape Liquid Crystal-Based Retromodulator Air to Ground Optical Communications
This paper describes the use of a 2D liquid crystal retro-modulator as a free space, wireless, optical link. The retro-modulator is made up of a retro-reflecting cornercube onto which 2 cascaded V-shape smectics liquid crystal modulators are mounted. The communication link differs with respect to more conventional optical links in not using amplitude (nor frequency) modulation, but instead state-of-polarisation (SOP) modulation known as Polarisation Shift Keying (PolSK). PolSK has the advantage over amplitude modulation, that it is less sensitive to changes in the visibility of the atmosphere, and increases inherently the bandwidth of the link. Measuring Thickness and Pretilt in Reflective Vertically Aligned Nematic Liquid Crystal Displays
Pretilt angle is a parameter of the utmost importance in the ultimate performance of vertically-aligned negative nematic LC displays. When these devices work in reflective mode, as is the LCOS microdisplays, accurate measurement of pretilt angles becomes a difficult problem, since usual experimental setups based on retardation of the polarization components of the impinging light are proportional to the product effective birefringence (neff - no) times thickness, and any attempt to separate these variables is cancelled out by symmetry. This work shows a relatively simple method capable of separating both variables. An experimental setup specifically aimed at vertically aligned reflective cells has been prepared. At the same time, a simulation model has been developed taking into account the properties of actual reflective displays. Comparison between experimental and theoretical results shows some discrepancies that can be explained assuming that the LC profile contains a residual twist. Including that twist in the model, an excellent agreement between theory and experiment has been achieved. Matching of simulations and measurements yields to the separate determination of pretilt angle and thickness and gives good estimates for the residual twist angle
Clues to NaCN formation
ALMA is providing us essential information on where certain molecules form.
Observing where these molecules emission arises from, the physical conditions
of the gas, and how this relates with the presence of other species allows us
to understand the formation of many species, and to significantly improve our
knowledge of the chemistry that occurs in the space. We studied the molecular
distribution of NaCN around IRC +10216, a molecule detected previously, but
whose origin is not clear. High angular resolution maps allow us to model the
abundance distribution of this molecule and check suggested formation paths. We
modeled the emission of NaCN assuming local thermal equilibrium (LTE)
conditions. These profiles were fitted to azimuthal averaged intensity profiles
to obtain an abundance distribution of NaCN. We found that the presence of NaCN
seems compatible with the presence of CN, probably as a result of the
photodissociation of HCN, in the inner layers of the ejecta of IRC +10216.
However, similar as for CH 3 CN, current photochemical models fail to reproduce
this CN reservoir. We also found that the abundance peak of NaCN appears at a
radius of 3 x 10 15 cm, approximately where the abundance of NaCl, suggested to
be the parent species, starts to decay. However, the abundance ratio shows that
the NaCl abundance is lower than that obtained for NaCN. We expect that the LTE
assumption might result in NaCN abundances higher than the real ones. Updated
photochemical models, collisional rates, and reaction rates are essential to
determine the possible paths of the NaCN formation.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A letter
