This study sought to identify the effects of exposure to Cu on the growth and biochemical activity of two tomato cultivars. Tomato seeds of ‘Carolina’ and ‘Cereja’ cultivars were disinfected and inoculated in MS medium plus copper sulfate concentrations (CuSO4) (default MS, 25, 50, and 100 µm) and had their growth monitored for 30 days. It was estimated that the growth and biomass accumulation of tomato plants ‘Carolina’ and ‘Cereja’, both from the aerial part and the roots, were benefited by 25 e 50 µm of CuSO4. However, it was observed that these concentrations were inefficient in controlling hyperhydricity and leaf deformation. There was a reduction of these phenomena in the treatment with 100 µm, in both cultivars. Tomato of ‘Carolina’ cultivar subjected to 100 µm showed an increase in anthocyanins and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the root system. There was a reduction of catalase (CAT) activity in shoots exposed to Cu. ‘Cereja’ tomatoes subjected to 100 µm showed an increase in CAT and SOD activity in shoots and roots, respectively. It was concluded that the ‘Carolina’ and ‘Cereja’ tomatoes have their growth impaired when exposed to 100 µm CuSO4. Concentrations higher than 50 µm of CuSO4 cause an increase in the antioxidant activity in the shoot of tomato plants from the ‘Carolina’ cultivar.     On weak vs. strong universality in the two-dimensional random-bond Ising ferromagnet

    We address the issue of universality in two-dimensional disordered Ising systems, by considering long, finite-width strips of ferromagnetic Ising spins with randomly distributed couplings. We calculate the free energy and spin-spin correlation functions (from which averaged correlation lengths, ξave\xi^{ave}, are computed) by transfer-matrix methods. An {\it ansatz} for the size-dependence of logarithmic corrections to ξave\xi^{ave} is proposed. Data for both random-bond and site-diluted systems show that pure system behaviour (with ν=1\nu=1) is recovered if these corrections are incorporated, discarding the weak--universality scenario.Comment: RevTeX code, 4 pages plus 2 Postscript figures; to appear in Physical Review B Rapid Communication

    This work presents an alternative method for determination of the herbicides tebuthiuron and hexazinone in ground water. The extraction was made with dichloromethane and the analyses by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), using reversed-phase column, C-18, mobile phase methanol/water 50:50, v/v, detection and quantification at 247 nm. The following validation parameters were obtained: limit of detection of method 0.02 and 0.03 ug L-1, limit of quantification of method 0.07 and 0.09 ?g L-1; linear range limit of quantification of instrument - 300 ug L-1 (r2 ? 0.998); recoveries from 90.3 to 108.2% and 90.3 to 101.6%; intermediary precision (%RSD) < 8 and < 6%, for hexazinone and tebuthiuron, respectively. The method showed to be efficient and reliable for determination of the herbicides in ground water
