Galerkin-Laguerre Spectral Solution of Self-Similar Boundary Layer Problems
In this work the Laguerre basis for the biharmonic equation introduced by Jie Shen is employed in the spectral solution of self-similar problems of the boundary layer theory. An original Petrov-Galerkin formulation of the Falkner-Skan equation is presented which is based on a judiciously chosen special basis function to capture the asymptotic behaviour of the unknown. A spectral method of remarkable simplicity is obtained for computing Falkner-Skan-Cooke boundary layer flows. The accuracy and efficiency of the Laguerre spectral approximation is illustrated by determining the linear stability of nonseparated and separated flows according to the Orr-Sommerfeld equation. The pentadiagonal matrices representing the derivative operators are explicitly provided in an Appendix to aid an immediate implementation of the spectral solution algorithms
The Portuguese Admiral Lançarote da Franca, Rediscoverer of The Canary Islands. 19th Century Falseness
del siglo XIX.In 1925, in his History of Portugal, the Portuguese historian Fortunato de Almeida published
three documents that testified the feats of a certain Admiral Lansarote da Framqua
(Lançarote da Franca) in the Canary Islands. According to the documents he was the
discoverer of two islands in the Atlantic and he died some years later in a battle against
the natives when he was trying to conquer them. In this article we will try to demonstrate,
thanks to new documents published for the first time, that the existence of the Admiral
Lançarote da Franca is a fake history, and that the documents published by Almeida were
probably conceived by the end of the 19th century
The rediscovery of Canary Islands in ad 1339
las Islas Canarias: el año de 1339This study aims to gather, for the first time
in a single text, all we know about the rediscovery of the Canary Islands by Lanzarotto
Malocello. In addition to the best-known documents, it will be also presented here: Angelino
Dulcert’s BL ms 25691 map, which could be the first to represent the Canary Islands; the
narration of the Arab historian Al-Maqrizi about an expedition of Genoese galleys to the
archipelago that took place in 1339; the news of the death of a Lanselot Malozèl in Cyprus
in 1372; some new affidavits which clarify that there was not one, but two Lanzarotto Malocello;
a new translation of al-Maqaddima by Ibn el Jaldun. The set of all these references
does not give us a definitive answer. However, the knowledge we have so far given these
documents points to a single probable date: the year 1339
The “mad flight” of the Vivaldi brothers in 1291
This study aims to gather all that is known about the voyage made by the Genoese brothers
Vivaldi in 1291, who set out to reach ad partes Indiae. Despite the failure of the expedition,
the memory of this amazing attempt mobilized the European imagination for centuries
and it could be perfectly placed at the same height as other navigations that were successful,
such as Columbus’ in America, or the circumnavigations of Africa and South America
carried out by Vasco da Gama and Magallanes two hundred years later. Unfortunately, the
few historical references found to date have not allowed us to accurately reconstruct this
adventure, and even on several occasions they have led to the development of unfounded
theories. Thanks to the presentation of some documents published here for the first time, this
study will analyse the different hypotheses proposed by historians in the last two centuries
and it will demonstrate the inaccuracy of some and the brilliance of others
The circumnavigation of Africa by the Vivaldi Brothers in 1291: precusors of Vasco da Gama
In 1291, the brothers Vadino and Ugolino Vivaldi set off from Genoa in two galleys with
the aim of reaching ad parte Indiae. A document lost for 700 years, Galvano Fiamma’s
Ystoria Ethyopie, offers new elements that allow us to conclude the Vivaldi managed to
circumnavigate Africa on their expedition and, therefore, they can be considered the fore-
runners of Vasco da Gama. Documents are presented in the appendix that show that the
Allegrancia galley did not participate in such undertaking, and, for that reason, it could not
give its name to the northernmost of the Canary Islands, the Island of Alegranza
The canarian slave trade in Italy at the end of the 15th century
From the moment of the discovery, the Canary Islands have been the object of interest
to Majorcans, Castilians and Portuguese, who saw in their inhabitants the opportunity
to obtain slaves and make an easy profit. Thanks to the data collected by various authors
and to new documents, the article reconstructs a synthetic picture of the Canarian slave
trade in Spain and in Italy at the end of the 15th century. Special attention has been paid
in their origin, destination, sex and age composition and in the structure of the sale price
Cleft lip and palate is the most common congenital head and neck malformation. Its treatment requires the multidisciplinary management of the patient. The aim of the orthodontist is to restore the functionality and the aesthetics to attend the patient through the treatment, from infancy until adulthood.
The aim of this review is to analyze the literature from the last 5 years about cleft lip and palate patients after secondary alveolar bone graft and to discuss post-surgical treatment options from an orthodontic point of view
The King of Tenerife who traveled to Venice in 1497: new documents
The true story of don Pedro Gonzales, the “wild man” from Tenerife who became a professor at the Sorbonne in Paris
Don Pedro Gonzales, the “wild man,” as he was nicknamed by his contemporaries, suffered
from hypertrichosis, a rare disease that caused uncontrollable growth of hair on his face and
all over his body. Until now, truly little was known about his life, especially about his stay
at the court of the kings of France. New documents found in French archives show that
despite his illness, he not only managed to lead a normal life with his wife and children,
but also became an influential member of his community and of the court
