    Assessing the state of forensic support to criminal investigations in Ghana: A case study in the Greater Accra Region

    The study assessed the state of forensic support to criminal investigations by measuring public awareness, knowledge and perception of forensic science in Ghana. A simple random technique was employed to elicit information from 200 consented respondents in selected neighbourhoods in Accra through face to face interviews, questionnaire responses, and random phone calls. The study identified forensic science education as a key challenge among others in the forensic sector. The state of forensics support to criminal investigations in Ghana was rated on the scale of good (10.5%), bad (81.5%) and very bad (8%) indicating that forensic science in Ghana has “gone dark”. The study’s findings call for respective stakeholders and policymakers of Ghana to prioritize forensic support to criminal investigations to promote safety, security, and sustainable economic development

    Sugar Content, pH, and Weight of Four Germplasms of Cashew Apple (Anacardium occidentale Linn.) Fruits Grown Under Two Agro-Ecological Zones in Ghana

    Changes in climatic conditions are associated with changes in the physicochemical properties of many fruits. Four germplasms of cashew apple originating from Brazil, Tanzania, Ghana (herein referred to as local) and Mozambique but all grown in Ghana were studied to assess the effect of agro-climatic zones on the sugar accumulation, pH, and weight of these cashew apples. Cashew apples were sourced from experimental stations in Bole and Wenchi in the Northern and Savannah regions of Ghana, respectively. A total of 1800 fruits were used for the experiment. Inter and intra significant differences (P < 0.05) were scored amongst ger­mplasms collected from both locations concerning the measured parameters. Sugar ranged between 8.7% - 12.5% with fruits from Bole having the highest sugar content. The pH value ranged from 3.9 (Local germplasm from Bole) – 4.3 (Tanzania germplasm from both loca­tions). The weight ranged between 33 g (Tanzania germplasm from Bole) – 69.8 g (Brazil germplasm from Bole). Meteorological data (from February 2017- April 2018) collected from both locations inf‍luenced the parameters, thus associating with the fruits from both locations. Conclusively, the present study indicated that, weather and geographical locations had an effect on sugar content, pH, and weight of cashew apples

    Microbial and antibiotic contaminants in imported and locally produced honey in the tamale metropolis of the Northern Region of Ghana

    Honey remains a valued natural product and has been used by humans as an important food source, disease treatment, and a healthy sugar source since ancient times. However, recent reports on the adulteration of honey and honey polluted with contaminants like pesticides, heavy metals, microorganisms as well as antibiotics have gained public attention. Thus, this study aimed to assess the quality and safety of imported and locally produced honey by specifically determining microbial and antibiotic contaminants as well as the beekeeping practices of honey producers within some locations of the Tamale metropolis. A semi-structured questionnaire was designed to gather information on the sources of honey, knowledge of diseases affecting bees, knowledge of contamination of honey, and knowledge of antibiotics use in honey production from honey producers in the study area. The procedures outlined by the Codex Alimentarius Commission were followed to ascertain the microbial quality of the honey samples. Also, the Premi® test kit was used to determine the presence of antibiotics residue in the honey samples. Only eight honey producers were identified in the study area; they all had knowledge on contamination of honey. Only two (25 %) of the honey producers had knowledge on diseases affecting bees and also the use of antibiotics in beekeeping or honey production. Concerning microbial contaminants, Listeria spp., Lactobacillus spp., Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, Clostridium spp., Campylobacter spp., and Staphylococcus spp. were the microorganisms enumerated upon microbiological quality assessment of 30 honey samples. Furthermore, 27 (90 %) of the honey samples tested positive for the presence of antibiotics residue of which 6 (85.7 %) were sampled from imported source, whilst the remaining 21 (91.3 %) were locally produced. Microbial and antibiotic contaminants found in the honey sampled in the study area support the hypothesis that honey may not be as pure as might be perceived and this might be a public health concern. Again, since there is no available record on the  screening or antibiotic residue in honey found on the Ghanaian market, this research is timely and necessary to provide the basis forintervention policies on the minimum limits of antibiotic residues present in honey.     Growing Pleurotus ostreatus (ex. Fr) Kummer Using Gamma Radiation in Southern Ghana and its Associated Pests

    Pests have been implicated in causing severe damage to food crops including mushrooms, thereby increasing the incidence of postharvest loss. This study investigated the various pests involved in the cultivation of gamma radiation aided cultivated Pleurotus ostreatus. Pests were isolated and identified by the procedure described by the Entomological Society of Canada. Cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus was achieved by pre-treating composted sawdust substrates and spawn preparation with a gamma radiation dose of 15 kGy from a Cobalt 60 source (SLL 515, Hungary) at a dose rate of 1.7 kGyh-1 in air. A total of five pests were recorded while cropping, namely; Drosophila melanogaster (Fruit fly), Blatta germanica (cockroach), Archachatina marginata (giant snail), and Doratogonus meridionalis (millipede) and Cryptophlebia leucotreta (False codling moth). The predominant pest was Drosophila melanogaster (Fruit fly) (97%). Results recorded over four flush periods were 378g, 0.63, and 63% for Total yield, biological yield, Biological Efficiency (%), respectively. The average stipe length and pileus diameter were recorded and showed no statistical differences (p>0.05) observed in the different weeks. Other growth parameters (mushroom size, total number of primordia, total number of fruitbodies etc.) recorded showed some significant differences (p<0.05).     Prospective Associations Between Maternal Depression and Infant Sleep in Women With Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

    Women with gestational diabetes mellitus have higher rates of perinatal depressive symptoms, compared to healthy pregnant women. In the general population, maternal depressive symptoms have been associated with infant sleep difficulties during the first year postpartum. However, there is lack of data on infants of mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus. This study assessed the prospective associations between maternal perinatal depressive symptoms and infant sleep outcomes. The study population consisted of 95 Swiss women with gestational diabetes mellitus and their infants, enrolled in the control group of the MySweetheart trial (NCT02890693). Perinatal depressive symptoms were assessed with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale at the first gestational diabetes mellitus visit during pregnancy, at 6-8 weeks postpartum, and 1 year postpartum. The Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire was used to assess infant sleep (i.e., nocturnal sleep duration, number of night waking, and maternal perception of infant sleep) at 1 year postpartum. Relevant maternal and infant measurements (e.g., infant sex or maternal age or social support) were collected or extracted from medical records as covariates. Antenatal maternal depressive symptoms at the first gestational diabetes mellitus visit were inversely associated with infant nocturnal sleep duration at 1 year postpartum (β = -5.9, p = 0.046). This association became marginally significant when covariates were added (β = -5.3, p = 0.057). Maternal depressive symptoms at 6-8 weeks postpartum were negatively and prospectively associated with infant nocturnal sleep duration (β = -9.35, p = 0.016), even when controlling for covariates (β = -7.32, p = 0.042). The association between maternal depressive symptoms and maternal perception of infant sleep as not a problem at all was significant at 1 year postpartum (β = -0.05, p = 0.006), although it became non-significant when controlling for appropriate covariates. No other significant associations were found. This study solely included measures derived from self-report validated questionnaires. Our findings suggest it is of utmost importance to support women with gestational diabetes mellitus as a means to reduce the detrimental impact of maternal perinatal depressive symptoms on infant sleep, given its predictive role on infant metabolic health

    Mental health and its associations with weight in women with gestational diabetes mellitus. A prospective clinical cohort study.

    Despite the prevalence of depression in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and the relationship between mental health (depression and well-being) and metabolic health, little is known about mental health or its metabolic impact in GDM pregnancy. This prospective clinical cohort study aimed to investigate associations between 1) well-being and depression, and 2) mental health and weight/weight gain in women with GDM. We included 334 pregnant women with GDM treated at a Swiss University Hospital between January 2016 and December 2018. They completed two self-report questionnaires: The World Health Organization well-being index (WHO-5) at the first (29 weeks of gestation) and last (36 weeks of gestation) GDM visits during pregnancy and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) at the first GDM visit. A cut-off of ≥11 was selected for this questionnaire to indicate the presence of elevated depression scores. There was an inverse association between the well-being and depression total scores at the first GDM visit during pregnancy (r = -0.55; p < 0.0001). Elevated depression scores at the first GDM visit were associated with subsequent weight gain in GDM pregnancy (β = 1.249; p = 0.019). In women with GDM, elevated depression scores during pregnancy are prospectively associated with weight gain. Depression symptoms should therefore be screened for and treated in women with GDM to reduce the risks associated with excessive weight gain during pregnancy

    Phytochemical Screening and Antimicrobial Activity of False Yam (Icacina oliviformis) Extracts on Microbes

    This study compares the phytochemicals and antimicrobial activity of Icacina oliviformis tuber and seed extracts on Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Pseudomonas aerugino­sa, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. False yam tubers were washed and peeled and the mesocarp removed to obtain the seeds. Methanol was used to obtain tuber and seed extracts of the false yam, after they were pulverized. Phytochemical screening showed the presence of tannins, saponins, alkaloids and glycosides in both extracts but the proportion of tannins and alkaloids were relatively higher in false yam seed extract than tuber extract. Antimicrobial assay showed that both extracts had antimicrobial activity justifying its use in the treatment of diseases in Northern Ghana. False yam seed extract had a relatively higher antimicrobial activity than tuber extract. The least minimum inhibition concentration recorded was 1.56 mg/ ml for false yam seed on Gram-positive bacteria and Candida albicans. False yam seed extract exhibited a higher antimicrobial activity against the microorganisms than the tuber extract, this provides a cheaper source of antimicrobial agent to treat infectious diseases.     Intuitive eating is associated with weight and glucose control during pregnancy and in the early postpartum period in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM): A clinical cohort study.

    High pre-pregnancy weight and body mass index (BMI) increase the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and diabetes after pregnancy. To tackle weight and metabolic health problems, there is a need to investigate novel lifestyle approaches. Outside of pregnancy, higher adherence to intuitive eating (IE) is associated with lower BMI and improved glycemic control. This study investigated the association between IE and metabolic health during pregnancy and in the early postpartum period among women with GDM. Two-hundred and fourteen consecutive women aged ≥18, diagnosed with GDM between 2015 and 2017 and completed the "Eating for Physical rather than Emotional Reasons (EPR)" and "Reliance on Hunger and Satiety cues (RHSC) subscales" of the French Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) questionnaire at the first GDM clinic visit were included in this study. Participants' mean age was 33.32 ± 5.20 years. Their weight and BMI before pregnancy were 68.18 ± 14.83 kg and 25.30 ± 5.19 kg/m <sup>2</sup> respectively. After adjusting for confounding variables, the cross-sectional analyses showed that the two subscales of IES-2 at the first GDM visit were associated with lower weight and BMI before pregnancy, and lower weight at the first GDM visit (β = -0.181 to -0.215, all p ≤ 0.008). In addition, the EPR subscale was associated with HbA1c and fasting plasma glucose at the first GDM visit (β = -0.170 and to -0.196; all p ≤ 0.016). In the longitudinal analyses, both subscales of IES-2 at first GDM visit were associated with lower weight at the end of pregnancy, BMI and fasting plasma glucose at 6-8 weeks postpartum (β = -0.143 to -0.218, all p ≤ 0.040) after adjusting for confounders. Increase adherence to IE could represent a novel approach to weight and glucose control during and after pregnancy in women with GDM

    Mental health and its associations with glucose-lowering medication in women with gestational diabetes mellitus. A prospective clinical cohort study.

    Mental health symptoms are frequent in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and may influence glycemic control. We therefore investigated if mental health symptoms (high depression and low well-being scores) predicted a need for glucose-lowering medication and if this use of medication influenced the trajectory of mental health during pregnancy and in the postpartum period. We included 341 pregnant women from a cohort of GDM women in a Swiss University Hospital. The World Health Organization Well-being Index-Five was collected at the first and last GDM and at the postpartum clinical visits and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale at the first GDM and the postpartum clinical visits. Medication intake was extracted from participants' medical records. We conducted linear and logistic regressions with depression as an interaction factor. Mental health symptoms did not predict a need for medication (all p ≥ 0.29). Mental health improved over time (both p ≤ 0.001) and use of medication did not predict this change (all p ≥ 0.40). In women with symptoms of depression, medication was associated with less improvement in well-being at the postpartum clinical visit (p for interaction=0.013). Mental health and glucose-lowering medication did not influence each other in an unfavourable way in this cohort of women with GDM

    Microbiological quality evaluation of ready-to-eat mixed vegetable salad, food ingredients and some water samples from a restaurant in Accra: A case study

    One serious threat to public health in both developed and developing countries is the microbial contamination of food. This problem poses a great challenge and consequently has economic implications. Causes of microbial contamination are diverse and these maybe natural, environmental, or technological. The microbiological quality of most readyto- eat foods is of great significance to human  health because they require minimal or no processing when consumed. The aim of this research was to investigate the microbiological quality of some ready-to-eat mixed vegetable salad foods, ingredients as well as the wash water samples of an urban restaurant located in Accra, Ghana. A total of thirty (30) samples categorized into mixed vegetable salads, foods and water obtained from an urban restaurant in the national capital of Ghana, Accra. They were analyzed at the microbiology laboratory and food microbiology  la  Loratories of School of Allied  Health Sciences (UHAS) and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research-Food Research Institute (CSIR-FRI), Ghana, respectively. Standard microbiological methods that are per International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Methods and Nordic Committee on Food Analysis Methods (NMKL) were used in determining the presence and levels of bacteria and fungi. Data obtained were transformed from standard to logarithmic forms and reported as mean+standard deviations. The aerobic plate countsamples ranged from 0- 4.73 log 10 CFU/g. E-coli counts also ranged between 0- 2.53 log 10 CFU, while Bacillus cereus counts were very low at 0-<10 log 10 CFU/g. Clostridium perfringens and Staphylococcus aureus counts were also very low ranging from 0- 1.0 log10 CFU/g. Enterobacteriaceae counts also ranged from 0- 1.90 log10 CFU/g. Molds and yeasts counts were generally low and ranged from  0- 2.48 log 10 CFU/g and 0- 1.0 log10 CFU/g, respectively. None of the samples tested contained Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. Fungal microbial loads were minimal given the quantities, and were deleterious to the health of consumers. The study revealed that the bacterial loads on mixed vegetable salads, ingredients and water samples used and served by an urban restaurant in Accra were within safe limits according to American Public Health Association (APHA) and International Commission for MicrobiologicalSpecifications for Foods (ICMSF) guidelines and, therefore, good for human consumption.
