A Time Evolution Study of the Superhumps of the Dwarf Nova 1RXS J232953.9+062814 by Wavelet Transform
The time evolution behaviour of the superhumps of the dwarf nova 1RXS
J232953.9+062814 is investigated with the wavelet analysis method. On the basis
of two nights CCD photometry performed during its first superoutburst as well
as other published brightness data, we reveal the superhump's time-dependence
as a function of periods and time. Our light curves, which phased in the rapid
decay ending portion of the superoutburst and in the dawn of a following normal
outburst, are important to help trace the superhump evolution for the star.
Evident amplitude variations of the superhumps, reflecting the fading of
outbursts, are detected. The general profile of brightness fading over the
outbursts roughly followed an exponential decay law or a form of a five-order
polynomial. Both the superhump period and the orbital period of the binary
system are detected in the present data. We obtain P_sh=0.04575(5) d and
P_orb=0.04496(5) d. They agree with the existing values based on additional
data. The two periods exchanged their roles during the superhump evolution.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysic
ACCOUNTING FOR SPATIAL CHARACTERISTICS OF WATERSHEDS IN EVALUATING WATER POLLUTION ABATEMENT POLICIES
This study evaluates three agricultural nonpoint pollution abatement policies: regulating the spatial pattern of agricultural activities, ambient tax, and abatement tax/subsidy. All three policies incorporate spatial characteristics of agricultural emission loading and movement for an agricultural watershed in the Midwest. The effects of spatial variation in natural conditions and landscape features on agricultural emissions and crop yield are evaluated using a newly developed biophysical simulation model and experimental data. While the policies are equally cost effective in reducing agricultural nonpoint source pollution, their implementation feasibility is quite different.atrazine, environmental policy, nonpoint pollution, simulation, watershed management, water quality, Environmental Economics and Policy,
Two-tape finite automata with quantum and classical states
{\it Two-way finite automata with quantum and classical states} (2QCFA) were
introduced by Ambainis and Watrous, and {\it two-way two-tape deterministic
finite automata} (2TFA) were introduced by Rabin and Scott. In this paper we
study 2TFA and propose a new computing model called {\it two-way two-tape
finite automata with quantum and classical states} (2TQCFA). First, we give
efficient 2TFA algorithms for recognizing languages which can be recognized by
2QCFA. Second, we give efficient 2TQCFA algorithms to recognize several
languages whose status vis-a-vis 2QCFA have been posed as open questions, such
as . Third, we show that
can be recognized by {\it -tape
deterministic finite automata} (TFA). Finally, we introduce {\it
-tape automata with quantum and classical states} (TQCFA) and prove that
can be recognized by TQCFA.Comment: 25 page
Single transverse-spin asymmetry in Drell-Yan lepton angular distribution
We calculate a single transverse-spin asymmetry for the Drell-Yan
lepton-pair's angular distribution in perturbative QCD. At leading order in the
strong coupling constant, the asymmetry is expressed in terms of a twist-3
quark-gluon correlation function T_F^{(V)}(x_1,x_2). In our calculation, the
same result was obtained in both light-cone and covariant gauge in QCD, while
keeping explicit electromagnetic current conservation for the virtual photon
that decays into the lepton pair. We also present a numerical estimate of the
asymmetry and compare the result to an existing other prediction.Comment: 15 pages, Revtex, 5 Postscript figures, uses aps.sty, epsfig.st
Heavy baryon spectroscopy in QCD
We perform a systematic study of the masses of charmed and bottom baryons in
the framework of the QCD sum rule approach. Contributions of the operators up
to dimension six are included in operator product expansion. The resulting
heavy baryon masses from the calculations are well consistent with the
experimental values, and predictions to the spectroscopy of the unobserved
bottom baryons are also presented.Comment: 14 pages,38 figure
Doubly heavy baryons in QCD sum rules
The mass spectra of doubly heavy baryons are systematically calculated in the
framework of QCD sum rules. With a tentative heavy-diquark--light-quark
configuration, the interpolating currents representing the doubly heavy baryons
are proposed. Contributions of the operators up to dimension six are included
in operator product expansion. The numerical results are compatible with other
theoretical predictions, which may support the structure of doubly
heavy baryons.Comment: RevTeX 4, 11 pages with 14 eps figures, accepted for publication in

Surface-mode microcavity
Optical microcavities based on zero-group-velocity surface modes in photonic
crystal slabs are studied. It is shown that high quality factors can be easily
obtained for such microcavities in photonic crystal slabs. With increasing of
the cavity length, the quality factor is gradually enhanced and the resonant
frequency converges to that of the zero-group-velocity surface mode in the
photonic crystal. The number of the resonant modes with high quality factors is
mainly determined by the number of surface modes with zero-group velocity.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Effects of energetic particles on zonal flow generation by toroidal Alfven eigenmode
Generation of zonal ow (ZF) by energetic particle (EP) driven toroidal Alfven
eigenmode (TAE) is investigated using nonlinear gyrokinetic theory. It is found
that, nonlinear resonant EP contri- bution dominates over the usual Reynolds
and Maxwell stresses due to thermal plasma nonlinear response. ZF can be forced
driven in the linear growth stage of TAE, with the growth rate being twice the
TAE growth rate. The ZF generation mechanism is shown to be related to
polarization induced by resonant EP nonlinearity. The generated ZF has both the
usual meso-scale and micro- scale radial structures. Possible consequences of
this forced driven ZF on the nonlinear dynamics of TAE are also discussed.Comment: To be submitted to Physics of Plasma
