    Rough-fuzzy rule interpolation

    AbstractFuzzy rule interpolation forms an important approach for performing inference with systems comprising sparse rule bases. Even when a given observation has no overlap with the antecedent values of any existing rules, fuzzy rule interpolation may still derive a useful conclusion. Unfortunately, very little of the existing work on fuzzy rule interpolation can conjunctively handle more than one form of uncertainty in the rules or observations. In particular, the difficulty in defining the required precise-valued membership functions for the fuzzy sets that are used in conventional fuzzy rule interpolation techniques significantly restricts their application. In this paper, a novel rough-fuzzy approach is proposed in an attempt to address such difficulties. The proposed approach allows the representation, handling and utilisation of different levels of uncertainty in knowledge. This allows transformation-based fuzzy rule interpolation techniques to model and harness additional uncertain information in order to implement an effective fuzzy interpolative reasoning system. Final conclusions are derived by performing rough-fuzzy interpolation over this representation. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated by a practical application to the prediction of diarrhoeal disease rates in remote villages. It is further evaluated against a range of other benchmark case studies. The experimental results confirm the efficacy of the proposed work

    Evaluation of an enzyme-linked immunospot assay for the immunodiagnosis of atypical spinal tuberculosis (atypical clinical presentation/atypical radiographic presentation) in China

    AbstractBackgroundAtypical spinal tuberculosis (TB) usually presents in a slowly indolent manner with nonspecific clinical presentations making the diagnosis a great challenge for physicians. New technologies for the detection of atypical spinal TB are urgently needed. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of an enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assay in clinically suspected cases of atypical spinal TB in China.MethodsFrom March 2011 to September 2012, a total of 65 patients with suspected atypical spinal TB were enrolled. In addition to conventional tests for TB, we used ELISPOT assays to measure the IFN-γ response to ESAT-6 and CFP-10 in T-cells in samples of peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Patients with suspected atypical spinal TB were classified by diagnostic category. Data on clinical characteristics of the patients and conventional laboratory results were collected.ResultsOut of 65 patients, 4 were excluded from the study. 18 (29.5%) subjects had culture-confirmed TB, 11 (18.0%) subjects had probable TB, and the remaining 32 (52.5%) subjects did not have TB. Generally, the features of atypical spinal TB include the following aspects: (1) worm-eaten destruction of vertebral endplate; (2) destruction of centricity of the vertebral body or concentric collapse of vertebral body; (3) tuberculous abscess with no identifiable osseous lesion; (4) contiguous or skipped vertebral body destruction. 26 patients with atypical spinal TB had available biopsy or surgical specimens for histopathologic examination and 23 (88.5%) specimens had pathologic features consistent with TB infection. The sensitivities of the PPD skin test and ELISPOT assay for atypical spinal TB were 58.6% and 82.8%, and their specificities were 59.4% and 81.3%, respectively. Malnutrition and age were associated with ELISPOT positivity in atypical spinal TB patients.ConclusionsThe ELISPOT assay is a useful adjunct to current tests for diagnosis of atypical spinal TB

    Interaction of BES1 and LBD37 transcription factors modulates brassinosteroid-regulated root forging response under low nitrogen in arabidopsis

    Brassinosteriod (BR) plays important roles in regulation of plant growth, development and environmental responses. BR signaling regulates multiple biological processes through controlling the activity of BES1/BZR1 regulators. Apart from the roles in the promotion of plant growth, BR is also involved in regulation of the root foraging response under low nitrogen, however how BR signaling regulate this process remains unclear. Here we show that BES1 and LBD37 antagonistically regulate root foraging response under low nitrogen conditions. Both the transcriptional level and dephosphorylated level of BES1, is significant induced by low nitrogen, predominantly in root. Phenotypic analysis showed that BES1 gain-of-function mutant or BES1 overexpression transgenic plants exhibits progressive outgrowth of lateral root in response to low nitrogen and BES1 negatively regulates repressors of nitrate signaling pathway and positively regulates several key genes required for NO3 - uptake and signaling. In contrast, BES1 knock-down mutant BES1-RNAi exhibited a dramatical reduction of lateral root elongation in response to low N. Furthermore, we identified a BES1 interacting protein, LBD37, which is a negative repressor of N availability signals. Our results showed that BES1 can inhibit LBD37 transcriptional repression on N-responsive genes. Our results thus demonstrated that BES1-LBD37 module acts critical nodes to integrate BR signaling and nitrogen signaling to modulate the root forging response at LN condition
