Motions of a homopolar motor inside a conducting tube
We analyze the physics of a type of homopolar motor comprising an AA battery
with two cylindrical neodymium magnets on each end that roll inside a metal
cylindrical tube. The motion of the motor results from the interaction between
the magnetic field of the magnets and the magnetic field created by the current
inside the magnets. We develop a model to describe the dynamics of the system,
including the calculation of the terminal velocity of the motor due to eddy
currents.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
First-principles study on the structural and electronic properties of single-layer MoSi2N4
Motivated by the successful exfoliation of a novel two-dimensional MoSi2N4 materials, in this work, we investigate the structural and electronic properties of a novel single-layer MoSi2N4 and the effect of strain engineering by using the first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory. The single-layer MoSi2N4 has a hexagonal structure with a space group of P6m1, which is dynamically stable. The material exhibits a semiconducting characteristic with an indirect band gap of 1.80/2.36 eV calculated by using the PBE/HSE functional. The conduction band minimum at the K point of the material originates from the Mo atom, while its valence band maximum at the G point is contributed by the hybridization between the Mo and N atoms. The electronic properties of the single-layer MoSi2N4 can be modulated with strain engineering, giving rise to a transition from a semiconductor to a metal and tending to a change in the band gap. Our results demonstrate that the single-layer MoSi2N4 is a promising candidate for electronic and optoelectronic applications
Sound-Dr: Reliable Sound Dataset and Baseline Artificial Intelligence System for Respiratory Illnesses
As the burden of respiratory diseases continues to fall on society worldwide,
this paper proposes a high-quality and reliable dataset of human sounds for
studying respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia and COVID-19. It consists
of coughing, mouth breathing, and nose breathing sounds together with metadata
on related clinical characteristics. We also develop a proof-of-concept system
for establishing baselines and benchmarking against multiple datasets, such as
Coswara and COUGHVID. Our comprehensive experiments show that the Sound-Dr
dataset has richer features, better performance, and is more robust to dataset
shifts in various machine learning tasks. It is promising for a wide range of
real-time applications on mobile devices. The proposed dataset and system will
serve as practical tools to support healthcare professionals in diagnosing
respiratory disorders. The dataset and code are publicly available here:

Seismic Interpretation of the Nam Con Son Basin and Its Implication for the Tectonic Evolution
DOI:10.17014/ijog.3.2.127-137The Nam Con Son Basin covering an area of circa 110,000 km2 is characterized by complex tectonic settings of the basin which has not fully been understood. Multiple faults allowed favourable migration passageways for hydrocarbons to go in and out of traps. Despite a large amount of newly acquired seismic and well data there is no significant update on the tectonic evolution and history of the basin development. In this study, the vast amount of seismic and well data were integrated and reinterpreted to define the key structural events in the Nam Con Son Basin. The results show that the basin has undergone two extentional phases. The first N - S extensional phase terminated at around 30 M.a. forming E - W trending grabens which are complicated by multiple half grabens filled by Lower Oligocene sediments. These grabens were reactivated during the second NW - SE extension (Middle Miocene), that resulted from the progressive propagation of NE-SW listric fault from the middle part of the grabens to the margins, and the large scale building up of roll-over structure. Further to the SW, the faults of the second extentional phase turn to NNE-SSW and ultimately N - S in the SW edge of the basin. Most of the fault systems were inactive by Upper Miocene except for the N - S fault system which is still active until recent time
Experimental investigation of wing flexibility on force generation of a hovering flapping wing micro air vehicle with double wing clap-and-fling effects
Experimental investigation of wing flexibility on vertical thrust generation and power consumption in hovering condition for a hovering Flapping-Wing Micro Air Vehicle, namely FlowerFly, weighing 14.5 g with a 3 g onboard battery and having four wings with double wing clap-and-fling effects, was conducted for several wing configurations with the same shape, area, and weight. A data acquisition system was set up to simultaneously record aerodynamic forces, electrical power consumption, and wing motions at various flapping frequencies. The forces and power consumption were measured with a loadcell and a custom-made shunt circuit, respectively, and the wing motion was captured by high-speed cameras. The results show a phase delay of the wing tip displacement observed for wings with high flexible leading edge at high frequency, resulting in less vertical thrust produced when compared with the wings with less leading edge flexibility at the same flapping frequency. Positive wing camber was observed during wing flapping motion by arranging the wing supporting ribs. Comparison of thrust-to-power ratios between the wing configurations was undertaken to figure out a wing configuration for high vertical thrust production but less power consumption
Capturing the Biologic Onset of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: Impact on Translational and Clinical Science
While much progress has been made in the last two decades in the treatment and the management of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD)-both ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's Disease (CD)-as of today these conditions are still diagnosed only after they have become symptomatic. This is a major drawback since by then the inflammatory process has often already caused considerable damage and the disease might have become partially or totally unresponsive to medical therapy. Late diagnosis in IBD is due to the lack of accurate, non-invasive indicators that would allow disease identification during the pre-clinical stage-as it is often done in many other medical conditions. Here, we will discuss what is known about the biologic onset and pre-clinical CD with an emphasis on studies conducted in patients' first degree relatives. We will then review the possible strategies to diagnose IBD very early in time including screening, available disease markers and imaging, and the possible clinical implications of treating these conditions at or close to their biologic onset. Later, we will review the potential impact of conducting translational research in IBD during the pre-clinical stage, especially focusing on the role of the microbiome in disease etiology and pathogenesis. Finally, we will highlight possible future developments in the field and how they can impact IBD management and our scientific knowledge of these conditions
