Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess physical activity (PA) level in a representative sample of Polish adults.Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was performed among 2413 randomly selected individuals (51.5% women) aged 18-79 years, who participated in the Nationwide Study of Occurrence of Risk Factors of Cardiovascular Diseases NATPOL 2011 (March-July 2011). The study procedures consisted of a questionnaire as well as of anthropometric, blood pressure and biochemical measurements. Leisure-time, occupational and commuting PA were assessed by the use of a questionnaire interview. Results: About 48.2% of adults do exercise for at least 30 minutes on most days of a week. About 11% of the respondents declare a sedentary lifestyle. About 26.5% of working population report hard physical work, while sedentary work is reported by 47.6% of the employed participants. Active commuting is declared by 27.3% of working/studying population. About 47.2%, 36.6%, and 15.3% spend 30 min per day, respectively, on this kind of PA. Conclusions: PA level of more than half of Polish adults is still not satisfactory. Promotion of an active lifestyle should concern mainly leisure-time and commuting PA with paying special attention to substantial differences in various socio-demographic groups

Rapid continuous microwave-assisted synthesis of silver nanoparticles to achieve very high productivity and full yield: from mechanistic study to optimal fabrication strategy

    Get PDF
Systematic studies of silver nanoparticle synthesis in a continuous-flow single-mode microwave reactor using polyol process were performed, revealing that the synthesis is exceptionally effective to give very small metal particles at full reaction yield and very high productivity. Inlet concentration of silver nitrate or silver acetate, applied as metal precursors, varied between 10 and 50 mM, and flow rates ranged from 0.635 to 2.5 dm3/h, to give 3–24 s reaction time. Owing to its much higher reactivity, silver acetate was shown to be far superior substrate for the synthesis of small (10–20 nm) spherical silver nanoparticles within a few seconds. Its restricted solubility in ethylene glycol, applied as the solvent and reducing agent, appeared to be vital for effective separation of the stage of particle growth from its nucleation to enable rapid synthesis of small particles in a highly loaded system. This was not possible to obtain using silver nitrate. All the observations could perfectly be explained by a classical LaMer–Dinegar model of NPs’ formation, but taking into account also nonisothermal character of the continuous-flow process and acetate dissolution in the reaction system. The performed studies indicate an optimal strategy for the high-yield fabrication of metal particles using polyol method

Rethinking Realism: A Critique of Georg Lukács

    No full text
Word Count: 3,624  In ?The Ideology of Modernism,? Georg Lukács proposes the following antithesis in order to critique the aesthetic condition of modern subjectivity: ?Abstract potentiality belongs wholly to the realm of subjectivity; whereas concrete potentiality is concerned with the dialectic between the individual?s subjectivity and objective reality? (24). The necessity of such an opposition resides in the aesthetic preservation of ?Realism,? i.e., the commitment to interrogating and discovering the true laws governing objective reality?in short, the uncovering of essence from the distorting images of appearance. Lukács identifies the emergence of Modernism as a symptom of the impossibility to negotiate, aesthetically, the difference between appearance and essence: ?If the distinction between abstract and concrete potentiality vanishes, if man?s inwardness is identified with an abstract subjectivity, human personality must necessarily disintegrate? (ibid). Despite his dialectical exhortations, my paper will be an attempt to demonstrate that Lukács? understanding of Realism effectuates an absolutization of ?concrete potentiality? insofar as he reduces the relationship of the literary subject to an essentialized form, namely, an explicit recuperation of Aristotle?s concept of man as a ?zoon politikon? (31). The circumscription of the literary subject as an immutable absolute?renders eternal, what realist literature has always understood to be temporal. In other words, Lukács? aesthetic strictures have transformed the immanent forms of literary production into static forms of transcendence.

The article presents selected results of the analytical works, carried out in the Air Force Institute of Technology, in the field of possibilities to support the pilot’s work in the cabin of the modern multi-task aircraft or military helicopter with the use of the computer voice communication assistant, with automatic recognition of the pilot’s voice and speech, which operates in conditions of the lack of time. There are presented the voice systems warning the pilot of the occurrence of an emergency state, as the so-called voice guides, P-591-04 type, used in the MiG-29 multipurpose aircraft and RI-65 type, used in the Mi-17 and Mi-24 helicopters. As an example of implementation of the concept of a new system supporting the pilot’s work, there was selected the voice communication system, constructed in the Air Force Institute of Technology for the W-3PL multi-purpose helicopter with the ZSA integrated avionics system. The main research problems related to the construction of integrated avionics systems, verbally supporting the pilot’s work, were discussed, and the specialized tools and research stations used in the Air Force Institute of Technology for the phonoscopic speech and voice studies, were presented. Furthermore, an example of the functional diagram and the system architecture of the pilot’s work verbal supporting for a selected emergency situation on the aircraft board were demonstrated, as well as the expected range of that system’s applications

Deformation of polycrystalline Ni-Mn-Ga alloys was studied for both the L21 parent phase and 10 M martensitic state. The effect of deformation by compression up to the fracture on mechanical behavior and structure change was studied for the inhomogeneous as-cast state and after annealing at 900○C for 50 hours. The structure, after deformation of the parent phase, observed by TEM reveals the presence of 10 M and 14 M martensite in the matrix, whereas the deformation of 10 M martensite does not show the change of the structure type. The stress-strain curves were analyzed and compared with the earlier published results
