A survey of Knowledge Management Practice among academic staff at the University of Botswana

Today Knowledge Management (KM) is being considered as a strategic management tool inclusive of all types of organisations. Universities being the research-intensive and knowledge generating academic institutions are better placed to practice knowledge management than any other organisation. With the above in mind, this study aims to explore and ascertain the knowledge management practices at the University of Botswana. The main objectives of the study were to: identify the valuable/critical knowledge; the major knowledge management initiatives; the existence of basic KM infrastructure; and, establish the major challenges faced at the University of Botswana in the successful implementation of KM. A structured questionnaire was used to carry out the study

Bizarre Radiographic Finding of Intraoral Neurofibroma: A Case Report

Neurofibroma(NF) is one of the common well known autosomal dominant inheritable entity with a prevalence of one per 3000 people. Clinically, there are two types of NF:NF 1 with 90% occurrence along with 7 subtypes and NF2. It is a genetic disorder and benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor. It has a neural origin with presence of café –au-lait spots along with multiple nodules over the skin and all over the body. It might be associated with bone malformation and sometimes the central nervous systems is also involved. Diagnosis of neurofibroma is based on clinical criteria. The frequency of oral manifestations is debated in the literature. Some authors report a frequency of 4-7% of cases, whereas others suggest that these manifestations are present in up to 72% of cases. Here the purpose of this case report is to review the disease with intraoral clinical and radiological findings found in a patient having a bizzare radiographic finding of Intraoral Neurofibroma (NF)

The role of performance appraisal in strategic human resources management in public libraries in Botswana.

The purpose of the research was to recommend a model for strategic human resource management through an effective staff performance appraisal system in Botswana public libraries. Performance appraisal is not a new concept; however the evolution of performance appraisal tools and techniques has been slow compared to that of other management fields. This discrepancy is now being realised; organisations are starting to acknowledge the importance of comprehensive, regular appraisal of staff as part of an effective human resource management policy. Human resources are a scarce and valuable tool in any organisation and it is mainly through performance appraisal that they can be developed and maintained, to ensure organisational success. The theory underlying strategic human resource management and performance management has been studied. Empirical research through a questionnaire was carried out in 23 public libraries. From these it was possible to develop a model entitled "A recommended strategic human resource management model". From empirical investigation the main critical qualities for efficient public library services were revealed as enthusiasm; positive attitude; innovative thinking; capability and commitment; critical competencies as expertise; team-building; and leadership; critical external factors as external environment; global competition; shrinking budget; changing library customers and employees' needs and information technology; strategic management issues organisational culture; transformational leadership; employee recognition and reward systems; performance measurement system; productivity improvement; and customer orientation; critical staff issues as sense of purpose and achievement; feeling of self-worth; job-security; recognition; status; career development; and salary; motivational factors as effective communication; job satisfaction; delegation of authority; clear job description; performance feedback; conducive working environment; human resource strategy issues as motivation building among staff;continuous education and development; generating competitive advantage through human resources; and alignment of human resource strategy with strategic management plan. The study recommends a strategic human resource management model for libraries along with: conducive working environment; adequate IT infrastructure to store, organise and retrieve information; staff training for excellent customer service; objective, reward based staff appraisal; performance feedback; performance appraisal should be aligned with staff selection, library mission, staff motivation and promotion in order to use it strategically; and human resource strategy should be developed immediately.Information ScienceD. Postmenopausal endometrial carcinoma presenting as urinary incontinence: a case report

Endometrial carcinoma (EC) most commonly presents with postmenopausal bleeding (PMB) or blood tinged vaginal discharge. Watery vaginal discharge is usually reported in fallopian tube malignancy. We reported a case of EC where she had profuse watery discharge from private part mimicking urine and so patient visited urologist for urinary incontinence and was later diagnosed as endometroid adenocarcinoma. A 73 year old female presented with history of passing urine involuntarily for last 3 months. Endometrial biopsy revealed endometrial endometroid adenocarcinoma-FIGO grade-2. FDG PET-CT scan revealed primary neoplastic pathology of uterus or endometrium with no lymphadenopathy. PMB or vaginal discharge in women with high risk factors like obesity, diabetes mellitus, unopposed oestrogen exposure needs prompt evaluation. PMB is highly suspicious of malignancy arising from cervix or uterus but copious watery discharge should also be evaluated thoroughly with ultrasound and confirmation of underlying malignancy with hysteroscopic guided endometrial sampling should be done

Robust Anti‐Tumor T Cell Response with Efficient Intratumoral Infiltration by Nanodisc Cancer Immunotherapy

Potent anti‐tumor T cell response and efficient intratumoral T cell infiltration are the major challenges for therapeutic cancer vaccines. To address these issues, a nanovaccine system is designed to promote anti‐tumor T cell responses, and intratumoral infiltration is examined in various murine tumor models. Subcutaneous vaccination with nanodiscs carrying human papillomavirus (HPV)‐16 E7 antigen elicits as high as ∼32% E7‐specific CD8α+ T cell responses in circulation, representing a 29‐fold improvement over the soluble peptide vaccination. Importantly, nanodisc vaccination also promotes robust intratumoral T cell infiltration and eliminates HPV16 E6/E7‐expressing TC‐1 tumors at mucosal sites, including lungs, inner lip, and intravaginal tissues. In a benchmark study with a live Listeria vaccine combined with anti‐PD‐1 IgG, nanodiscs plus anti‐PD‐1 immune checkpoint blockade elicits comparable levels of T cell responses with anti‐tumor efficacy. Furthermore, compared with Complete Freund’s Adjuvant combined with tetanus toxoid, nanodisc vaccination in HLA‐A02 mice generates >200‐fold stronger IFN‐γ+ T cell responses against a neoantigen from an HLA‐A02 melanoma patient. Overall, these results show that the nanodisc system is a promising cancer vaccine platform for inducing anti‐tumor T cell responses.Efficient infiltration of T cells in solid cancer is a major challenge for cancer immunotherapy. A nanoparticle vaccine system is developed to promote T cell infiltration into peripheral mucosal tissues and eliminate disseminated tumors.
