MEDIA AND WOMAN : PICTURING MEDIA CONSTRUCTION TOWARDS WOMAN POLITICAL PARTISIPATION IN POST REFORMATION AGE IN INDONESIA

This research aims to extricate the construction of Kompas toward news coverage of woman legislative candidate in Legislative Election 2009. Albeit reformation has been occurred since 12 years ago, the relation of woman and politic is still clashed and debated in economic, politic, social, culture and religion contexts. Woman often placed as marginalized human in politic. The terms of ‘public domain’ and ‘private domain’ are a dichotomy which explain role of man and woman in society. Woman is hitherto only involved in internal household. Socio culturally, woman is positioned as inferior party, in famous Javanese philosophy it is said that woman is confined as ‘konco wingking’ (friend in kitchen). Since Independen day of Indonesia in 1945, the number of woman in legislative board has not been representative compared with the total woman population in Indonesia. Based on the phenomena, this research is proposed to examine central issues which reported by Kompas consistently. As a media industry, Kompas Daily Newspaper is intentionally selected as the research subject caught with the news coverage which nationally based and dominate circulation. In sociocultural area, Kompas often offer ideas and discourse which then contribute an influence to society. This research will simultaneously disclose central issues which reported by Kompas consistently in woman legislative candidate news coverage in legislative election 2009. The method used in this research is framing method. Framing devices which will be applied is Gamson and Modigliani’s which consists of framing devices and reasoning devices. Framing devices is caught directly to central issues which stressed in a news. This devices is simbolized with words using, sentences using, graphic or picture, and certain metaphor. Reasoning devices is regarded cohesion and coherence of media text which refer to certain notion so message can be received as truth, natural, and real. Current Portrayal of Character Education in Indonesian Childrens Books

Research studies in the western context indicated that the authors and illustrators have shown effort to depict character education effectively through children�s picture books. Conversely, in Indonesia, only few research studies regarding character education. A study was focused on how to use the books to promote character education. Another research was examining the types of moral values. None of the existed studies investigated approach to depict character education in Indonesia children�s picture books. Using semiotic method, this study indicated that among all significant components of portraying character education, the children�s books missed the two pivotal components, which are visual imagery and semiotic components

Which is More Trustworthy: Google or Doctor? A Reception Analysis of Media as Health Educator

As media develops as a primary source of health information, two questions remains: How people receive online media as a source of health education? and what group of people will tend to use online media intensively than others? Although government has provided various ways to fulfill people�s health needs has been considered a development on health policy in Indonesia, examining contemporary situation and current online media development reveals a need for exploring how people receive online media as health educator. This research study depicted how people from a certain background receive online media as health educator. Using a reception analysis, the research study has conducted through several processes of interview and observation with some selected informants. The research study revealed that different people from different background would receive online media as their health educator from different levels. From this research study, the researchers concluded that the three informants receive online media as their primary health educator. However, because of their educational, motivational, social and technological access, they performed different approach of receiving online media as their health educator

MASS MEDIA ROLE IN DEVELOPING CHARACTER EDUCATION: A DEBATE

Currently, the most influential thing in character education development is media. All the more various programs in television or radio show an effort of media industries to reach their market entirely. As the result, media often provides unqualified content of programs. Many electronic cinemas, reality show, even cartoon programs present sexuality, violence and harshness. Previous research has proved that television influences negative effect, such as some children committed suicide after watch a certain program. Moreover, the development of media is not merely about the content but also the improvement of media shape. New media or internet, for example, gives a significant impact on how students behave. They would rather send a ‘sms’ to communicate to their teacher than directly come. This facts remain us to the theory of ‘Hypodermic Needle’ or ‘Media Effect’ which convince that media has direct effect for its audience. Yet, ‘Uses and Gratification’ perspective explain that audience posses a control of using media. Either media effect or uses and gratification approaches drive us to an understanding that media plays a debatable role, particularly in character education. Observing some cases on children’s character problem, the focus of this paper is to describe the process of how mass media (media), with all of its potential negative impacts will still play positive role in character education. This paper tries to prove that the debatable role of media cannot be circumvented. This paper reports on observation of how local television industries manage their aspects, such as conceptual aspect, human resources aspect, and technical aspect. This paper highlights the uncertainty of local television industry mana¬gement on those aspects as something common related to economic and politic context. From ‘market perspective’, this paper concludes some important strategies which aim to help the survival of local television industries. Instead of competing with Jakartas television, local television should prepare for understanding and creating qualified local content, maintaining good internship program to solve human resource problems, and improving production of qualified program within limited technical equipments. A good management of local television industries in those aspects helps them to be a strategic tool in disseminating democratization within broadcasting media

Television networking system is not a new theme in broadcasting. For some years, television networking system has been applied in many countries. Nowadays, Indonesia also has a willingness to apply television networking system. It is legalized trough it’s broadcasting law no 32/ 2002. Unfortunately, until two periods of waiting, this regulation has not been implemented yet. Many factors are potential to be the causes of this problem; so it is a must to explore the term of television networking system and the implementation in Indonesia in order to give a mental picture about television networking system. This exploration study has explored the term of television networking system and it’s application in Indonesia by refers to America’s and British’s as earlier country which have implemented television networking system. Trough this exploration, television networking system has been mapped into the definition: the crucial characters it has and the aspects which support it’s growth. Trough the economic politic media perspective, this study has also mapped the strengths and the weaknesses of television networking system in Indonesia. This study conclude that although there must be many factors to be prepared before the implementation of television networking system, it is still possible to implement it in Indonesia trough many alternatives adjusted to our nation condition in the perspective of democtratization

The purpose of this research is to expound on the theories and practices of public speaking in the context of teaching and learning. By utilizing literature study as the research method, the researchers discovered that historically, public speaking has its roots in the Greek tradition of rhetoric. Theoretically, it is within the domain of public communication not only differs from other forms of human communication but also from random speaking activities in public. Focusing on an audience-centered speechmaking approach, the research delves into the position of student as an audience and how speechmaking should be crafted with their interest in mind. PENGARUH FREKUENSI, DURASI, DAN INTENSITAS MENGGUNAKAN FACEBOOK TERHADAP PENDIDIKAN KARAKTER ANAK DI SEKOLAH PELANGI KRISTUS

The relationship between media and children has been an intriguing issue in media studies. When media technology develops, problems regarding children’s lives raise. Particularly, this research study depicted the relation of media and character education, which became a focus in Indonesia’s education system. The researcher used quantitative approach to find, analyze, and present data to picture the connection of media and character education. This research study has been done by conducting a survey to students in Pelangi Kristus, a school that has been known as one of those which implement character education in its curriculum. The research study showed that there was no influence between frequency, duration, and intensity of using Facebook and character education in Pelangi Kristus school, both in negative and positive aspect. Even though there was internet access availability and variety of gadgets students owned, they were not beneficial for the students, except for entertaining themselves such as playing game. Thus, there should be a media literacy to help students understand the maximum benefit of using Facebook in Pelangi Kristus
