Developing an early childhood teacher workforce development strategy for rural and remote communities
The North West Early Childhood and Primary Teacher Workforce Development Strategy offers students in the Pilbara and Kimberley the opportunity to enrol in a Western Australian University’s fully accredited Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) part time and externally – so they can continue to live and work in their communities. The Western Australian Department of Education and Training (WA DET) and the Commonwealth Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) have funded the project, enabling the University to provide mentoring support and provision for Recognition of Prior Learning, on a case-by-case basis, depending on their individual experience and levels of skill. On completion of the course students will be fully qualified to teach from Kindergarten to Year 7. Added to this they will be able to bring their own knowledge of their unique communities, languages and cultures to their teaching
Evidence for Circumburst Extinction of Gamma-Ray Bursts with Dark Optical Afterglows and Evidence for a Molecular Cloud Origin of Gamma-Ray Bursts
First, we show that the gamma-ray bursts with dark optical afterglows (DOAs)
cannot be explained by a failure to image deeply enough quickly enough, and
argue that circumburst extinction is the most likely solution. If so, many DOAs
will be ``revived'' with rapid follow up and NIR searches in the HETE-2 and
Swift eras. Next, we consider the effects of dust sublimation and
fragmentation, and show that DOAs occur in clouds of size R > 10L_{49}^{1/2} pc
and mass M > 3x10^5L_{49} M_{sun}, where L is the luminosity of the optical
flash. Stability considerations show that such clouds cannot be diffuse, but
must be molecular. Consequently, we compute the expected column density
distribution of bursts that occur in Galactic-like molecular clouds, and show
that the column density measurements from X-ray spectra of afterglows, DOAs and

Space Shuttle: Static pressure distribution on Chrysler Corporation Space Division SERV booster configuration
A dual purpose test was conducted in the propulsion wind tunnel (PWT) to evaluate the performance of an aerospike engine, in the presence of a booster, and obtain forebody and base pressure distributions on the booster in which it is installed. The test item was a 2.5 percent scaled replica of the SERV booster employing a 5 percent spike length aerospike engine installed in the base region of the model. Cold flow air was used to simulate engine jet operation. Two booster configurations were investigated, one on which reentry aerospike engine thermal protection doors were installed, and another where the doors were removed. The data presented are representative of the latter configuration for a Mach number range of 0 to 1.25 at angles of attack of 0 and 8 degrees and 0 degrees angle of sideslip
Irradiate-anneal screening of total dose effects in semiconductor devices
An extensive investigation of irradiate-anneal (IRAN) screening against total dose radiation effects was carried out as part of a program to harden the Mariner Jupiter/Saturn 1977 (MJS'77) spacecraft to survive the Jupiter radiation belts. The method consists of irradiating semiconductor devices with Cobalt-60 to a suitable total dose under representative bias conditions and of separating the parts in the undesired tail of the distribution from the bulk of the parts by means of a predetermined acceptance limit. The acceptable devices are then restored close to their preirradiation condition by annealing them at an elevated temperature. IRAN was used when lot screen methods were impracticable due to lack of time, and when members of a lot showed a diversity of radiation response. The feasibility of the technique was determined by testing of a number of types of linear bipolar integrated circuits, analog switches, n-channel JFETS and bipolar transistors. Based on the results of these experiments a number of device types were selected for IRAN of flight parts in the MJS'77 spacecraft systems. Voyager electronic parts radiation program, volume 1
The Voyager spacecraft is subject to radiation from external natural space, from radioisotope thermoelectric generators and heater units, and from the internal environment where penetrating electrons generate surface ionization effects in semiconductor devices. Methods for radiation hardening and tests for radiation sensitivity are described. Results of characterization testing and sample screening of over 200 semiconductor devices in a radiation environment are summarized
Spitzer Observations of Gamma-Ray Burst Host Galaxies: A Unique Window into High Redshift Chemical Evolution and Star-formation
We present deep Spitzer 3.6 micron observations of three z~5 GRB host
galaxies. Our observations reveal that z~5 GRB hosts are a factor of 3 less
luminous than the median rest-frame V-band luminosity of spectroscopically
confirmed z~5 galaxies in the GOODS fields and the UDF. The strong connection
between GRBs and massive star formation implies that not all star-forming
galaxies at these redshifts are currently being accounted for in deep surveys
and GRBs provide a unique way to measure the contribution to the star-formation
rate density from galaxies at the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function.
By correlating the co-moving star-formation rate density with co-moving GRB
rates at lower redshifts, we estimate a lower limit to the star-formation rate
density of 0.12+/-0.09 and 0.09+/-0.05 M_sun/yr/Mpc^3 at z~4.5 and z~6,
respectively. Finally, we provide evidence that the average metallicity of
star-forming galaxies evolves as (stellar mass density)^(0.69+/-0.17) between
and , probably indicative of the loss of a significant
fraction of metals to the intergalactic medium, particularly in low-mass

Head-up transition behavior of pilots with and without head-up display in simulated low-visibility approaches
To quantify head-up transition behavior with and without a flightpath type head-up display, eight rated B-727 pilots each flew 31 manual and coupled approaches in a simulator with B-727 dynamics and collimated model board external scene. Data were also obtained on the roll played by the head-up display in the coupled-to-manual transition. Various wind shears, low visibilities, and ceilings were tested along with unexpected misalignment between the runway and head-up display symbology. The symbolic format used was a conformal scene. Every pilot except one stayed head-up, flying with the display after descending below the ceiling. Without the display and as altitude decreased, the number of lookups from the instrument panel decreased and the duration of each one increased. No large differences in mean number or duration of transitions up or down were found during the head-up display runs comparing the no-misalignment with the lateral instrument landing system offset misalignment runs. The head-up display led to fewer transitions after the pilot made a decision to land or execute a missed approach. Without the display, pilots generally waited until they had descended below the ceiling to look outside the first time, but with it several pilots looked down at their panel at relatively high altitudes (if they looked down at all). Manual takeover of control was rapid and smooth both with and without the display which permitted smoother engine power changes
Evaluation of Materials and Concepts for Aircraft Fire Protection
Woven fiberglass fluted-core simulated aircraft interior panels were flame tested and structurally evaluated against the Boeing 747 present baseline interior panels. The NASA-defined panels, though inferior on a strength-to-weight basis, showed better structural integrity after flame testing, due to the woven fiberglass structure
Non-linear resistivity and heat dissipation in monolayer graphene
We have experimentally studied the nonlinear nature of electrical conduction
in monolayer graphene devices on silica substrates. This nonlinearity manifests
itself as a nonmonotonic dependence of the differential resistance on applied
DC voltage bias across the sample. At temperatures below ~70K, the differential
resistance exhibits a peak near zero bias that can be attributed to
self-heating of the charge carriers. We show that the shape of this peak arises
from a combination of different energy dissipation mechanisms of the carriers.
The energy dissipation at higher carrier temperatures depends critically on the
length of the sample. For samples longer than 10um the heat loss is shown to be
determined by optical phonons at the silica-graphene interface.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
