Van der Waals Frictional Drag induced by Liquid Flow in Low- Dimensional Systems
We study the van der Waals frictional drag force induced by liquid flow in
low-dimensional systems (2D and 1D electron systems, and 2D and 1D channels
with liquid). We find that for both 1D and 2D systems, the frictional drag
force induced by liquid flow may be several orders of magnitude larger than the
frictional drag induced by electronic current.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Coulomb drag as a measure of trigonal warping in doped graphene
I suggest to use the effect of Coulomb drag between two closely positioned
graphite monolayers (graphene sheets) for experimental measurement of the
strength of weak non-linearities of the spectrum in graphene. I consider
trigonal warping as a representative mechanism responsible for the drag effect.
Since graphene is relatively defect-free, I evaluate the drag conductivity in
the ballistic regime and find that it is proportional to the fourth power of

Giant Fluctuations of Coulomb Drag in a Bilayer System
We have observed reproducible fluctuations of the Coulomb drag, both as a
function of magnetic field and electron concentration, which are a
manifestation of quantum interference of electrons in the layers. At low
temperatures the fluctuations exceed the average drag, giving rise to random
changes of the sign of the drag. The fluctuations are found to be much larger
than previously expected, and we propose a model which explains their
enhancement by considering fluctuations of local electron properties.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
The geochemistry of iodine and bromine in sediments of the Panama Basin
The areal and vertical distribution of iodine, bromine and organic carbon has been examined in a suite of sediment cores from the Panama Basin. Both halogens are approximately correlative with organic carbon in surface sediments. The concentrations of all three elements vary sympathetically but considerably with depth, especially in equatorial carbonate oozes where a distinct mid-depth (40-80 cm) concentration maximum is observed...

Electrical switching of magnetic polarity in a multiferroic BiFeO3 device at room temperature
We have directly imaged reversible electrical switching of the cycloidal
rotation direction (magnetic polarity) in a (111)-BiFeO3 epitaxial-film device
at room temperature by non-resonant x-ray magnetic scattering. Consistent with
previous reports, fully relaxed (111)-BiFeO3 epitaxial films consisting of a
single ferroelectric domain were found to comprise a sub-micron-scale mosaic of
magneto-elastic domains, all sharing a common direction of the magnetic
polarity, which was found to switch reversibly upon reversal of the
ferroelectric polarization without any measurable change of the magneto-elastic
domain population. A real-space polarimetry map of our device clearly
distinguished between regions of the sample electrically addressed into the two
magnetic states with a resolution of a few tens of micron. Contrary to the
general belief that the magneto-electric coupling in BiFeO3 is weak, we find
that electrical switching has a dramatic effect on the magnetic structure, with
the magnetic moments rotating on average by 90 degrees at every cycle.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; corrected figure
On the Existence of Radiation Gauges in Petrov type II spacetimes
The radiation gauges used by Chrzanowski (his IRG/ORG) for metric
reconstruction in the Kerr spacetime seem to be over-specified. Their
specification consists of five conditions: four, which we treat here as valid
gauge conditions, plus an additional condition on the trace of the metric
perturbation. In this work, we utilize a newly developed form of the perturbed
Einstein equations to establish a condition -- on a particular tetrad component
of the stress-energy tensor -- under which the full IRG/ORG can be imposed.
Using gauge freedom, we are able to impose the full IRG for Petrov type II and
type D backgrounds, using a different tetrad for each case. As a specific
example, we work through the process of imposing the IRG in a Schwarzschild
background, using a more traditional approach. Implications for metric
reconstruction using the Teukolsky curvature perturbations in type D spacetimes
