    The Scots in Sydney

    Get PDF
Although it is sometimes said of nineteenth century Sydney that it was an English city in contrast with the more Scottish city of Melbourne, people of Scottish origin have played important roles in the development and life of Sydney. They have been there from the very beginning: young Forby Sutherland, one of Captain Cook’s crew in 1770, was the first Briton to be buried in Australia, in a district now bearing his name. Major Robert Ross of the Marines and Captain John Hunter were among several Scots on the first fleet in 1788. Scots formed a small minority of convicts transported (perhaps 5 per cent) and were among the earliest free settlers in the 1790s

Digital Metal: Regulating Bitcoin as a Commodity

    Get PDF
In this Note, I will argue that Bitcoin should be categorized and regulated as a commodity. This treatment would be consistent with the economic behavior of Bitcoin’s users and would provide a clearer regulatory path for Bitcoin’s future. Additionally, categorizing Bitcoin as a commodity would provide increased clarity to existing regulatory efforts. Part I of this Note will briefly discuss the basic technological underpinnings of the Bitcoin system. Part II will quickly survey the current regulatory landscape around Bitcoin. Part III will examine Bitcoin’s identity crisis and explain why Bitcoin should not be categorized as a currency or a security—the two other categories vying for Bitcoin’s inclusion. Part IV will explain why Bitcoin is a commodity, and Part V will examine the legal advantages of treating Bitcoin as a commodity. Finally, Part VI will examine how treating Bitcoin as a commodity can provide needed consumer protection regulation in the Bitcoin economy

Spatial correlations in a self‐repelling ring polymer

The scattering structure function SN(q) of a large flexible ring polymer with N monomers in a good solvent is calculated as a universal expansion in the variable q2<RG2≳, where <RG2≳ denotes the mean square radius of gyration of the ring. To solve the interacting polymer problem, the methods of renormalized field theory are applied directly to Fixman’s cluster expansion. The results are obtained using the approximation of expanding in Ï”â‰Ą4−(dimension of space) and indicate that the self‐repulsion has a greater influence on the large distance behavior of a ring polymer when compared with a linear polymer. In particular, we find that the radius of gyration ratio <RG2≳ring/<RG2≳ line is a universal quantity and to first order in Ï” is equal to 0.568. For ideal polymers, the ratio is known to be 0.5.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/70385/2/JCPSA6-76-3-1574-1.pd

GalSOM - Colour-Based Image Browsing and Retrieval with Tree-Structured Self-Organising Maps

    Get PDF
This paper describes an image browsing and retrieval application called GalSOM. Bitmap images are described by their colour histograms and sorted using an improved variant of the tree-structured self-organising map (TS-SOM) algorithm. The advantages of using such a system are discussed in detail, and their application to the problem of image theft detection is proposed
