    Impact of water harvesting on groundwater recharge, productivity and net returns with integrated farming systems approach in eastern dry zone of Karnataka

    The paper evaluates the performance of water harvesting structures by looking at the case of the Sujala watershed in Karnataka. The water harvesting structures have facilitated the rejuvenation of failed wells and enhanced the water yield. About 75% of the failed bore wells were rejuvenated as against 66% in the non- watershed. The yield of bore wells were increased by 21% in the watershed where as in non-watershed area the water yield has reduced by 11%. Investment analysis of water harvesting structures indicated that for every rupee of present investment on water harvesting structure there is a return of Rs. 2.79 in farm pond and Rs. 2.19 in recharge pits.     Pollen morphology in two Urgineoid species of Drimia (Baker) Jessop

    Pollen grains of eight accessions of Urginea indica (Roxb) Kunth. and two accessions of Urgineawightii (Wight) Lakshmin. were examined by Light microscopy and Scanning electron microscopy. Detailed pollen morphological characters are given for these accessions. Our investigation revealed several variations in pollen size, exine ornamentation among the accessions of U. indica (Roxb) Kunth. and U. wightii (Wight) Lakshmin. The study confirmed that the exine sculpting provides valuable characters for separating the species of Urginea. Reticulate ornamentation of the exine was observed in the accessions of U. indica complex and perforated exineornamentation in accessions of U. wightii complex. Minor variations with regard to measurements of dimensions in size, shape and ornamentation were also observed in accessions of U. indica and U. wightii . Pollen fertility analysis revealed highest percentage fertility in Sitampoondi accession of U. indica complex and Gulbargha accession of U. wightii complex but in most of the accessions seed setting is not observed in natural conditions. Pollen germination studies revealed highest germination rate in Brew Baker’s and Kwack medium supplemented with 25% sucrose concentration for Urginea pollen

    Novel SSR Markers for Polymorphism Detection in Pigeonpea (Cajanus spp.)

    With an objective to expand the repertoire of molecular markers in pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan), 36 microsatellite or simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci were isolated from a SSR-enriched genomic library. Primer pairs were designed for 23 SSR loci, of which 16 yielded amplicons of expected size. Thirteen SSR markers were polymorphic amongst 32 cultivated and eight wild pigeonpea genotypes representing six Cajanus species. These markers amplified a total of 72 alleles ranging from two to eight alleles with an average of 5.5 alleles per locus. The polymorphic information content for these markers ranged from 0.05 to 0.55 with an average of 0.32 per marker. Phenetic analysis clearly distinguished all wild species genotypes from each other and from the cultivated pigeonpea genotypes. These markers should be useful for genome mapping, trait mapping, diversity studies and assessment of gene flow between populations in pigeonpea

    GADMS: Gathering Aggregated Data using Mobile Sink in Wireless Sensor Networks

    WSNs consist of resource constrained sensor nodes that monitor the physical environment and transmit their data to the Sink through multi-hop communication. Mobile sinks are used to reduce the number of hops the data travels and thereby reducing the overall energy consumption. In this paper we propose Gathering Aggregated Data using Mobile Sink in Wireless Sensor Networks (GADMS) protocol that allows the mobile sink to collect data from WSNs where path of the mobile sink is not predetermined. The mobile sink halts at a point in the network and broadcasts an aggregate query. The average path length of a data packet is a constant and hence it can withstand node failures. The performance analysis shows that GADMS incurs less energy consumption and improved packet delivery ratio in comparison to SinkTrail.

    Serum electrolytes levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a cross-sectional study

    BACKGROUND: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a common metabolic disease worldwide. Electrolyte played significant roles in the normal functioning of the body, and deregulation is indicative of different types of disease and electrolyte disturbances are often reported in type 2 DM (T2DM). AIM: The aim of the study was to estimate the levels of serum electrolytes in outpatients with T2DM and correlate serum electrolytes with random blood sugar (RBS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with T2DM visiting the outpatient Departments of Medicine, between April 2016 and March 2017 were included. Of 148 diagnosed T2DM cases, 74 were had RBS level >300mg/dL (group-1) and 74 had RBS level ≤300mg/dL (group-2). Serum sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), chloride (Cl-) levels were measured by using the Roche 9180 electrolyte analyzer. RESULTS: In this study, there was a significant decrease in serum Na+ levels in group 1 (131.83±4.36 mmol/L) compared to group 2 (134.15±4.90 mmol/L).The serum levels of K+ was found to be increased in group 1 (4.51±0.61 mmol/L) in comparison with group 2 (4.26±0.52 mmol/L). In group-1, an inverse relationship was present between serum Na+ (r=-0.342) and Cl- (r=-0.538) with RBS which was statistically significant. In group-2, a significant correlation was present between serum K+ and RBS (r=0.356, p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The study showed lower levels of Na+ and higher K+ levels in group-1 compared to group-2 subjects. This study showed that the distribution of serum Na+ and K+ levels is dependent on plasma glucose levels in patients with DM and also suggests that monitoring the electrolyte levels in hyperglycemia is pertinent in the management of diabetes
