    Non-radial Oscillation Modes of Compact Stars with a Crust

    Oscillation modes of isolated compact stars can, in principle, be a fingerprint of the equation of state (EoS) of dense matter. We study the non-radial high-frequency l=2 spheroidal modes of neutron stars and strange quark stars, adopting a two-component model (core and crust) for these two types of stars. Using perturbed fluid equations in the relativistic Cowling approximation, we explore the effect of a strangelet or hadronic crust on the oscillation modes of strange stars. The results differ from the case of neutron stars with a crust. In comparison to fluid-only configurations, we find that a solid crust on top of a neutron star increases the p-mode frequency slightly with little effect on the f-mode frequency, whereas for strange stars, a strangelet crust on top of a quark core significantly increases the f-mode frequency with little effect on the p-mode frequency.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

    Background: The Latarjet technique is an effective procedure that reconstructs and augments the glenohumeral joint instability. It improves stability by increasing the glenoid width and using the sling effect. The aim of the study was to assess the functional outcomes of the primary Latarjet treatment with BioLatarjet® LCS cannulated flat head screws in cases of recurrent shoulder dislocation. Methods: In this retrospective study, 30 patients were treated with the primary Latarjet technique. Rowe score, visual analog scale (VAS), Quebec back pain disability scale (QDS), and, American shoulder and elbow surgeon score (ASES), and range of motion (ROM) were evaluated in the selected population at the time point of 6-week, 3-month, and 6-month after surgery for the determination of the functional outcomes in them. Results: The results showed that all patients had excellent or good functional outcomes with significant improvements in Rowe score, VAS score, QDS, and ASES scores (p<0.0001). The ROM in patients for forward elevation, cross body adduction, external rotation by side of body/neutral, and internal rotation by side of body/neutral were related to better clinical outcome and less movement of recurrent instability with optimal graft placement. Conclusions: These findings have clinical significance in that they demonstrate the effectiveness of the Latarjet technique in improving stability without significantly increasing the risk of complications. The BioLatarjet® LCS cannulated flat head screws were found to be safe and efficient for primary Latarjet surgeries, providing appropriate graft healing and a low recurrence of instability, with a good return-to-sports rate.

    DESIGN AND EVALUATION OF CONTROLLED-RELEASE OCULAR INSERTS OF BRIMONIDINE-TARTRATE AND TIMOLOL MALEATE

    Objective: The current work was attempted to formulate and evaluate a controlled-release matrix-type ocular inserts containing a combination of brimonidine tartrate and timolol maleate, with a view to sustain the drug release in the cul-de-sac of the eye.Methods: Initially, the infrared studies were done to determine the drug–polymer interactions. Sodium alginate-loaded ocuserts were prepared by solvent casting technique. Varying the concentrations of polymer—sodium alginate, plasticizer—glycerine, and cross-linking agent—calcium chloride by keeping the drug concentration constant, made a total of nine formulations. These formulations were evaluated for its appearance, drug content, weight uniformity, thickness uniformity, percentage moisture loss, percentage moisture absorption, and in vitro release profile of the ocuserts. Finally, accelerated stability studies and the release kinetics were performed on the optimised formulation.Results: It was perceived that polymer, plasticizer, and calcium chloride had a significant influence on the drug release. The data obtained from the formulations showed that formulation—F9 was the optimised formulation, which exhibited better drug release. The release data of the optimised formulation tested on the kinetic models revealed that it exhibited first-order release kinetics. Conclusion: It can be concluded that a natural bioadhesive hydrophilic polymer such as sodium alginate can be used as a film former to load water soluble and hydrophilic drugs like brimonidine tartrate and timolol maleate. Among all formulations, F9 with 400 mg sodium alginate, 2% calcium chloride and 60 mg glycerin were found to be the most suitable insert in terms of appearance, ease of handling, thickness, in vitro drug release and stability

    The comparisons of the efficacy of two fixed dose combinations, i.e. Salmeterol and Fluticasone vs. Formoterol and Tiotropium bromide in moderate to severe COPD patients

    Background: Bronchodilators are essential for symptomatic management of all stages of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). For patients whose COPD is not sufficiently controlled by monotherapy, combining a Ăź2-agonist with either inhaled steroid or anticholinergic drug is a convenient way of delivering treatment. Currently, there is no documentation to say that one drug is superior to other or the contrary, but a combination of two drugs is more effective than giving single drug alone in patients suffering from COPD.Methods: The study was prospective, open labelled, randomized, comparative interventional clinical study conducted by the Departments of Pharmacology and Medicine, Basaveshwara Medical College and Hospital, Chitradurga in 60 moderates to severe COPD patients.Results: Both the treatments i.e. Salmeterol/Fluticasone and Tiotropium/Formoterol were equally effective as far as the improvement of the lung functions and Borg dyspnoea score are concerned. The difference in improvement with the combination of Salmeterol/Fluticasone was not statistically significant (p>0.05) compared to the combination of Tiotropium/Formoterol. However, Salmeterol/Fluticasone was found to be better than Tiotropium/Formoterol in improving the lung function of moderate to severe COPD patients.Conclusions: Salmeterol/Fluticasone is efficacious and better than Tiotropium /Formoterol combination for maintenance therapy in moderate to severe COPD patients
