    A numerical study of bounds in the correlations of fractional quantum Hall states

    We numerically compute the guiding center static structure factor Sˉ(k)\bar{S}(\boldsymbol k) of various fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states to O((kℓ)6)\mathcal{O}\left((k\ell)^6\right). Employing density matrix renormalization group on an infinite cylinder of circumference LyL_y, we study the two-dimensional problem using Ly/ℓ≫1L_y/\ell \gg 1. The main findings of our work are: 1) the ground states that deviate away from the ideal conformal block wavefunctions, do not saturate the Haldane bound, and 2) the coefficient of O((kℓ)6)O\left((k\ell)^6\right) term appears to be bounded above by a value predicted by field theories proposed in the literature.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

    Prevalence of Obesity and its Influencing Factors in Affluent School Children of Tumkur: Lessons from South India

    Background:Obesity is defined by WHO “as a condition of abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in adipose tissue, to the extent that health may be impaired”. The problem of childhood obesity is quite high in rich and affluent countries. 1. To estimate the prevalence of obesity among school children aged 6-15 years in three affluent schools of Tumkur. 2. To study the influencing factors of obesity among school children. Methods: Study Design: Case Control study. Study Settings: Three affluent schools of Tumkur city, Karnataka, South India. Sample size was2000 Students of three affluent schools and duration of study was fromJune to August 2014. Each Child’s height and weight were measured by adopting standard procedure. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated using BMI charts based on NCHS (national center for health statistics) standards. A child was considered obese if the BMI was > 95th percentile cutoff point which is specific to the age and sex of the child. To determine the association of (life style) influencing factors of obesity in children, mothers were interviewed in presence of children to gather information’ about their child’s daily (24 hour) activity. Results:Out of 2000 children 66 were obese. The prevalence was 3.3% in school children in the age group of 6-15 years in three affluent schools of Tumkur. In our study, Prevalence of obesity was more in boys (3.47%) on comparison to girls (3.04%). There is increased prevalence of obesity in age group of six, eleven and twelve years. In this study 77.2% cases spent less than 2 hrs in a day and 22.7% cases spent more than 2 hrs in physical activities. Prevalence of obesity was more in children who spent less than 2 hrs in a day in physical activities. This was statistically significant. Conclusions:Prevalence of obesity in school children aged 6-15 yrs is 3.3% in three affluent schools of Tumkur. Prevalence of obesity was more in boys on comparison with girls. Physical activity was the significant influencing factor of obesity among school children

    Stochastic turbulence modeling in RANS simulations via multilevel Monte Carlo

    A multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) method for quantifying model-form uncertainties associated with the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations is presented. Two, high-dimensional, stochastic extensions of the RANS equations are considered to demonstrate the applicability of the MLMC method. The first approach is based on global perturbation of the baseline eddy viscosity field using a lognormal random field. A more general second extension is considered based on the work of [Xiao et al. (2017)], where the entire Reynolds Stress Tensor (RST) is perturbed while maintaining realizability. For two fundamental flows, we show that the MLMC method based on a hierarchy of meshes is asymptotically faster than plain Monte Carlo. Additionally, we demonstrate that for some flows an optimal multilevel estimator can be obtained for which the cost scales with the same order as a single CFD solve on the finest grid level

    A case of drug induced oral erythema multiforme

    Erythema multiforme (EM) is an acute, self-limited, usually mild, and often relapsing mucocutaneous syndrome. It occurs predominantly in younger age group with slight male preponderance. The classical cutaneous target lesions and mucosal bullae or erosions are clinical manifestations of EM. Drug induced oral EM a rare clinical entity which involves only the lips and oral mucosa without skin involvement. These lesions are difficult in diagnosing with other oral ulcerative lesions with similar clinical manifestations. Here we are reporting a case of phenylbutazone induced oral EM. The causality of phenylbutazone in the reaction was “probable” as per Naranjo scale and seriousness of the reaction was “prolonged hospitalization”. The patient was managed by immediate withdrawal of the suspected drug along with conservative managements to prevent secondary infections. The patient was discharged successfully after 15 days of admission

    Cytoview: development of a cell modelling framework

    The biological cell, a natural self-contained unit of prime biological importance, is an enormously complex machine that can be understood at many levels. A higher-level perspective of the entire cell requires integration of various features into coherent, biologically meaningful descriptions. There are some efforts to model cells based on their genome, proteome or metabolome descriptions. However, there are no established methods as yet to describe cell morphologies, capture similarities and differences between different cells or between healthy and disease states. Here we report a framework to model various aspects of a cell and integrate knowledge encoded at different levels of abstraction, with cell morphologies at one end to atomic structures at the other. The different issues that have been addressed are ontologies, feature description and model building. The framework describes dotted representations and tree data structures to integrate diverse pieces of data and parametric models enabling size, shape and location descriptions. The framework serves as a first step in integrating different levels of data available for a biological cell and has the potential to lead to development of computational models in our pursuit to model cell structure and function, from which several applications can flow out

    Geodesic Congruences and Their Deformations in Bertrand Space-times

    We study the energy conditions and geodesic deformations in Bertrand space-times. We show that these can be thought of as interesting physical space-times in certain regions of the underlying parameter space, where the weak and strong energy conditions hold. We further compute the ESR parameters and analyze them numerically. The focusing of radial time-like and radial null geodesics is shown explicitly, which verifies the Raychaudhuri equation.Comment: 1 + 15 Pages, 2 .eps figures.     EFFECT OF GRAPE SEED EXTRACT ON REMINERALIZATION OF ARTIFICIAL CARIES: AN IN-VITRO STUDY

    Objective: Grape seeds are gaining more importance because the Proanthocyanidins†present in them have excellent anticaries, remineralizing, and antibacterial properties. Although many preventive measures have been tried, dental caries remains one of the most prevalent diseases in humans.The ultimate goal of any intervention is the preservation of tooth structure, prevention of lesion progression and inducing remineralization. Thepresent in-vitro study was done to investigate the effect of grape seed extract (GSE) on artificial enamel caries in human teeth.Methods: A total of 50 sound premolars extracted from patients undergoing orthodontic treatment were used in the study. The teeth were cleanedand were immersed in a demineralizing solution for 96 hrs at 37°C and 50% relative humidity to create artificial lesions. The samples were randomlydivided into two groups of 25 each. Half of the samples were immersed in the GSE solution (test) and the other half in saline (control), respectively, for8 days. The samples were measured by microhardness tester to obtain values in Vickers hardness scale. Data were entered into Microsoft Excel andwere analyzed using independent t-test for inter-group comparison and paired t-test for intra-group comparison using SPSS version 21.Results: The mean±SD microhardness values after remineralization for the test and control groups were 357.56±5.53 and 337.60±6.38. GSE groupsignificantly increased the microhardness of the lesions (p≤0.001).Conclusion: GSE is a potential remineralizing agent and can be used to prevent progression of dental caries.Keywords: Grape seed extract, Remineralization, Dental caries
