    Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope observations of an M2.8 flare: insights into the initiation of a flare-coronal mass ejection event

    We present the first observations of a solar flare with the GMRT. An M2.8 flare observed at 1060 MHz with the GMRT on Nov 17 2001 was associated with a prominence eruption observed at 17 GHz by the Nobeyama radioheliograph and the initiation of a fast partial halo CME observed with the LASCO C2 coronograph. Towards the start of the eruption, we find evidence for reconnection above the prominence. Subsequently, we find evidence for rapid growth of a vertical current sheet below the erupting arcade, which is accompanied by the flare and prominence eruption.Comment: Accepted for publication in Solar Physic

    Analytical study of the incidence of papillary carcinoma in thyroiditis cases and assessing the risk

    Background: The association between thyroid carcinoma and thyroiditis remains controversial in medical bibliography. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the incidence of papillary carcinoma in diagnosed cases of thyroiditis patients who underwent surgery and analyze the risk of carcinoma in thyroiditis patients.Methods: Patients of both sexes, age more than 13 with symptomatic thyroid swelling and diagnosed as any sub types of thyroiditis with FNAC/USG/Antibody titer in Government Medical College, Thrissur, India. 41females and 3 male patients were studied to assess risk of carcinoma in thyroiditis cases, analyzing the age, symptoms, clinical presentations and FNAC results.Results: 17 out of 44 cases showed post-operative biopsy as papillary carcinonoma.15 out of 17 papillary carcinoma cases diagnosed were above 36 years, with 6times increased risk, 95% CI = (1.142, 31.532). 10 out of 17 carcinoma cases have rapid increase in size (p=0.00). 82.4% of carcinoma cases have obstructive symptoms (p=0.00). FB sensation is more frequently seen in postoperative benign thyroiditis. 59% of the papillary carcinoma cases were diagnosed pre operatively as colloid with thyroiditis.Conclusions: Females aged more than 36years and all adult males with a rapid increase in size of the thyroid swelling and/or obstructive symptoms like dyspnoea/dysphagia, who’s FNAC suggestive of colloid with features of thyroiditis have a high malignant potential for papillary carcinoma, and total/near total thyroidectomy may be considered as an appropriate operative treatment

    Sulphur-coated urea as a source of sulphur and an enhanced efficiency of nitrogen fertilizer for spring wheat

    Use of high analysis fertilizers such as diammonium phosphate in place of ordinary superphosphate and urea in place of ammonium sulphate over years, sulphur application to crop fields has considerably decreased, which has led to widespread sulphur deficiency in Indian soils. Hence, considering this into account a field study for two years was conducted at the research farm of ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi to evaluate sulphur-coated urea (SCU) as a source of sulphur (S) and an enhanced efficiency of nitrogen fertilizer. Prilled urea (PU) coated with 4 to 5% S significantly increased wheat grain yield to the tune of 9.58 to 11.21% and nitrogen 19.06 to 23.94% and sulphur uptake 21.76 to 29.29% over prilled urea alone by wheat. However, net return and benefit: cost ratio was the highest and significant at 5% S coating onto PU. Five % SCU supplied 50% of the sulphur needs of the wheat crop and enhanced nitrogen recovery efficiency by 60% and is therefore recommended as sulphur as well as enhanced efficiency of nitrogen fertilizer for wheat in Indo-Gangetic plains of India. This is an important finding considering the environmental safety by increased nitrogen recovery and also productivity in present scenario

    Rock Magnetic properties of Proterozoic mafic dykes from the Southern margin of Cuddapah Basin

    Seventeen basic dykes of Proterozoic age intruding the Archaean basement from the Southern margin of the Cuddapah Basin were studied from five sites for their magnetic characters. NRM intensity (Jn) of the dykes range between 1793 and 57×10−3 Am−1 while magnetic susceptibility (χ) ranges from 31 to 303×10−6 CGS units. Koenigsberger's ratio (Qn) varies from 1 to 55 for most of the specimens. All the above parameters are indicative of retaining the original magnetization in most of the dykes sampled. Based on the above mentioned rock magnetic properties along with hysterisis studies and low temperature (−196°C) magnetic studies, it is inferred that the main magnetic carrier in these dykes is magnetite in multi domain and mixed domain states. Dykes from Tirupati area seems to be magnetically altered

    This paper focusing on soft storey Multi-storey steel structure buildings, These building are becoming increasingly common and economical in developed and developing countries with the increase in urbanization all over the world. Many of these buildings do not have structural walls at ground floor level to increase the flexibility of the space for recreational use such as parking or for retail or commercial use. these buildings which possess storey that are significantly weaker or more flexible than adjacent storey are known as soft storey buildings, these are characterized by having a story which has a lot of open space. while the un obstructed space of the soft story might be aesthetically or commercially desirable, it also means that there are less opportunities to install shear walls, specialized walls which are designed to distribute lateral forces so that a building can cope with the swaying characteristic of an earthquake. Soft-storey is also called as flexible storey. a large number of buildings with soft storey have been built in recent year. but it showed poor performance during past earthquake. soft story’s are subjected to larger lateral loads during earthquakes and under lateral loads their lateral deformations are greater than those of other floors so the design of structural members of soft stories is critical and it should be different from the upper floors.     Oxidation mechanism in metal nanoclusters: Zn nanoclusters to ZnO hollow nanoclusters

    Zn nanoclusters (NCs) are deposited by Low-energy cluster beam deposition technique. The mechanism of oxidation is studied by analysing their compositional and morphological evolution over a long span of time (three years) due to exposure to ambient atmosphere. It is concluded that the mechanism proceeds in two steps. In the first step, the shell of ZnO forms over Zn NCs rapidly up to certain limiting thickness: with in few days -- depending upon the size -- Zn NCs are converted to Zn-ZnO (core-shell), Zn-void-ZnO, or hollow ZnO type NCs. Bigger than ~15 nm become Zn-ZnO (core-shell) type: among them, NCs above ~25 nm could able to retain their initial geometrical shapes (namely triangular, hexagonal, rectangular and rhombohedral), but ~25 to 15 nm size NCs become irregular or distorted geometrical shapes. NCs between ~15 to 5 nm become Zn-void-ZnO type, and smaller than ~5 nm become ZnO hollow sphere type i.e. ZnO hollow NCs. In the second step, all Zn-void-ZnO and Zn-ZnO (core-shell) structures are converted to hollow ZnO NCs in a slow and gradual process, and the mechanism of conversion proceeds through expansion in size by incorporating ZnO monomers inside the shell. The observed oxidation behaviour of NCs is compared with theory of Cabrera - Mott on low-temperature oxidation of metal.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

    The true reinforced random walk with bias

    We consider a self-attracting random walk in dimension d=1, in presence of a field of strength s, which biases the walker toward a target site. We focus on the dynamic case (true reinforced random walk), where memory effects are implemented at each time step, differently from the static case, where memory effects are accounted for globally. We analyze in details the asymptotic long-time behavior of the walker through the main statistical quantities (e.g. distinct sites visited, end-to-end distance) and we discuss a possible mapping between such dynamic self-attracting model and the trapping problem for a simple random walk, in analogy with the static model. Moreover, we find that, for any s>0, the random walk behavior switches to ballistic and that field effects always prevail on memory effects without any singularity, already in d=1; this is in contrast with the behavior observed in the static model.Comment: to appear on New J.
