Single cell mechanics: stress stiffening and kinematic hardening
Cell mechanical properties are fundamental to the organism but remain poorly
understood. We report a comprehensive phenomenological framework for the
nonlinear rheology of single fibroblast cells: a superposition of elastic
stiffening and viscoplastic kinematic hardening. Our results show, that in
spite of cell complexity its mechanical properties can be cast into simple,
well-defined rules, which provide mechanical cell strength and robustness via
control of crosslink slippage.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
Phase velocity and phase diffusion in periodically driven discrete state systems
We develop a theory to calculate the effective phase diffusion coefficient
and the mean phase velocity in periodically driven stochastic models with two
discrete states. This theory is applied to a dichotomically driven Markovian
two state system. Explicit expressions for the mean phase velocity, the
effective phase diffusion coefficient and the P\'eclet number are analytically
calculated. The latter shows as a measure of phase-coherence forced
synchronization of the stochastic system with respect to the periodic driving.
In a second step the theory is applied to a non Markovian two state model
modeling excitable systems. The results prove again stochastic synchronization
to the periodic driving and are in good agreement with simulations of a
stochastic FitzHugh-Nagumo system.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
Mode-multiplexing deep-strong light-matter coupling
Dressing quantum states of matter with virtual photons can create exotic
effects ranging from vacuum-field modified transport to polaritonic chemistry,
and may drive strong squeezing or entanglement of light and matter modes. The
established paradigm of cavity quantum electrodynamics focuses on resonant
light-matter interaction to maximize the coupling strength
, defined as the ratio of the vacuum Rabi
frequency and the carrier frequency of light. Yet, the finite oscillator
strength of a single electronic excitation sets a natural limit to
. Here, we demonstrate a new regime of
record-strong light-matter interaction which exploits the cooperative dipole
moments of multiple, highly non-resonant magnetoplasmon modes specifically
tailored by our metasurface. This multi-mode coupling creates an ultrabroadband
spectrum of over 20 polaritons spanning 6 optical octaves, vacuum ground state
populations exceeding 1 virtual excitation quantum for electronic and optical
modes, and record coupling strengths equivalent to
. The extreme interaction drives
strongly subcycle exchange of vacuum energy between multiple bosonic modes akin
to high-order nonlinearities otherwise reserved to strong-field physics, and
entangles previously orthogonal electronic excitations solely via vacuum
fluctuations of the common cavity mode. This offers avenues towards tailoring
phase transitions by coupling otherwise non-interacting modes, merely by
shaping the dielectric environment
Formation of Liesegang patterns: A spinodal decomposition scenario
Spinodal decomposition in the presence of a moving particle source is
proposed as a mechanism for the formation of Liesegang bands. This mechanism
yields a sequence of band positions x_n that obeys the spacing law
x_n~Q(1+p)^n. The dependence of the parameters p and Q on the initial
concentration of the reagents is determined and we find that the functional
form of p is in agreement with the experimentally observed Matalon-Packter law.Comment: RevTex, 4 pages, 4 eps figure
Predictors of outcome for severely emotionally disturbed children in treatment
Despite general agreement that severely emotionally disturbed children and adolescents are an "at risk" group, and that ongoing evaluation and research into the effectiveness of services provided for them is important, very little outcome evaluation actually takes place. The absence of well-conducted and appropriately interpreted studies is particularly notable for day or residential treatment programs, which cater for the most severely emotionally disturbed youths. This thesis outlines the main areas of conceptual, pragmatic and methodological confusion and neglect which impede progress in research in this area. It argues for plurality of data analytic strategies and research designs. It then critically reviews the reported findings about the effectiveness of day and residential treatment in specialist facilities, and the predictors of good outcomes for this treatment type. This review confirms that there is very little to guide practice. Having argued for the legitimacy of its methods and the necessity to address basic questions, the thesis reports the results of a naturalistic study based on data accumulated during a decade-long evaluative research program taking place at Arndell Child and Adolescent Unit, Sydney. The study addresses the question of what child, family and treatment variables predict outcome for 159 children and adolescents treated at this facility from 1990 to 1999. Statistically significant results with large effect size were obtained. Among the most disturbed subgroup of forty three children, (a) psychodynamic milieu-based treatment was shown to be more effective than the “empirically-validated” cognitive-behavioural treatment which superseded it in 1996, and (b) children from step-families showed better outcome than those from other family structures. Furthermore, it was found for the study sample as a whole that severe school-based problem behaviours were associated with a limited trajectory of improvement in home-based problem behaviour. These results are discussed with regard to implications for treatment, research methodology, policy and further studies
Liesegang patterns: Effect of dissociation of the invading electrolyte
The effect of dissociation of the invading electrolyte on the formation of
Liesegang bands is investigated. We find, using organic compounds with known
dissociation constants, that the spacing coefficient, 1+p, that characterizes
the position of the n-th band as x_n ~ (1+p)^n, decreases with increasing
dissociation constant, K_d. Theoretical arguments are developed to explain
these experimental findings and to calculate explicitly the K_d dependence of
1+p.Comment: RevTex, 8 pages, 3 eps figure
Quasi-single helicity spectra in the Madison Symmetric Torus
Evidence of a self-organized collapse towards a narrow spectrum of magnetic instabilities in the Madison Symmetric Torus [R. N. Dexter, D. W. Kerst, T. W. Lovell, S. C. Prager, and J. C. Sprott, Fusion Technol. 19, 131 (1991)] reversed field pinch device is presented. In this collapsed state, dubbed quasi-single helicity (QSH), the spectrum of magnetic modes condenses spontaneously to one dominant mode more completely than ever before observed. The amplitudes of all but the largest of the m=1 modes decrease in QSH states. New results about thermal features of QSH spectra and the identification of global control parameters for their onset are also discussed
Tensile Fracture of Welded Polymer Interfaces: Miscibility, Entanglements and Crazing
Large-scale molecular simulations are performed to investigate tensile
failure of polymer interfaces as a function of welding time . Changes in the
tensile stress, mode of failure and interfacial fracture energy are
correlated to changes in the interfacial entanglements as determined from
Primitive Path Analysis. Bulk polymers fail through craze formation, followed
by craze breakdown through chain scission. At small welded interfaces are
not strong enough to support craze formation and fail at small strains through
chain pullout at the interface. Once chains have formed an average of about one
entanglement across the interface, a stable craze is formed throughout the
sample. The failure stress of the craze rises with welding time and the mode of
craze breakdown changes from chain pullout to chain scission as the interface
approaches bulk strength. The interfacial fracture energy is calculated
by coupling the simulation results to a continuum fracture mechanics model. As
in experiment, increases as before saturating at the average
bulk fracture energy . As in previous simulations of shear strength,
saturation coincides with the recovery of the bulk entanglement density. Before
saturation, is proportional to the areal density of interfacial
entanglements. Immiscibiltiy limits interdiffusion and thus suppresses
entanglements at the interface. Even small degrees of immisciblity reduce
interfacial entanglements enough that failure occurs by chain pullout and
Band Formation during Gaseous Diffusion in Aerogels
We study experimentally how gaseous HCl and NH_3 diffuse from opposite sides
of and react in silica aerogel rods with porosity of 92 % and average pore size
of about 50 nm. The reaction leads to solid NH_4Cl, which is deposited in thin
sheet-like structures. We present a numerical study of the phenomenon. Due to
the difference in boundary conditions between this system and those usually
studied, we find the sheet-like structures in the aerogel to differ
significantly from older studies. The influence of random nucleation centers
and inhomogeneities in the aerogel is studied numerically.Comment: 7 pages RevTex and 8 figures. Figs. 4-8 in Postscript, Figs. 1-3 on
