Unusual landings of Crimson jobfish and Yellowfin tuna along Odisha coast
The crimson jobfish Pristipomoides filamentosus
belongs to the family Lutjanidae (Snappers) is highly
valued due to its white quality meat. Usually only a few
numbers, mostly of small size are landed along with
other fishes in trawl and longline catches. Recently,
on 5 November 2019 about one tonne of mostly large
sized crimson jobfish caught by single day operation
longliner unit landed at Chandravaga Landing Centr
Sadhus in democratic politics in late 20th century India
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Political Science, 2009.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 222-225).This empirical study examines the political significance of religious leaders-known commonly as sadhus-in a huge and mature democracy like India. During the late '80s and the '90s, a flurry of sadhu activism coincided with the dramatic rise of a previously insignificant political party, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). As a conservative Hindu nationalist party, the BJP allied with many sadhus, came to power at the center and in many states, breaking the monopoly that the relatively secular Congress party had held for more than four decades. The sadhus and the BJP came together over the controversy of whether a Hindu temple had been destroyed to build a 16th century mosque (the Ram Janmabhoomi dispute). It propelled a few sadhus-who I describe as spiritual agents, whose essential identity is based on individualism, freedom from making long-term commitments, and yet committed to transcendental causes-to band together under contingent conditions and the availability of a platform to voice their discontent. However, both the coalition between pro-BJP sadhus and the BJP, as well as the desire to build the temple, unraveled over the next decade. Not only did the newly emergent BJP broaden its political base by distancing itself from a single issue, but the unity among sadhus also splintered. This thesis is an empirical and agent-centered approach to examine nationalism and a particular strain of religious fundamentalism. It examines the commonalities and differences among sadhus themselves as factors that explain both the unity among sadhus in one period and the splintering of that unity at another time.(cont.) Sadhus are individualistic, free-floating, religious individuals who became sadhus not to pursue any social cause, but to live a life free of responsibilities and in tune with their inner callings. Aside from the role of outside forces and differences among sadhus over key political issues, I argue that essentially it is the elements common to the identity of sadhus as sadhus that temper their fundamentalist tendencies. Looking forward, the crouching Hindu serpent, like the famed kundalini in yoga, best characterizes this strain of sadhu-led Hindu fundamentalism, ever poised to rise and recoil.by Rajesh Pradhan.Ph.D

Serum gamma-glutamyl transferase level in acute stroke
Background: Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide, causing 6.2 million deaths in 2011. Serum Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) has been conventionally considered as a marker of excessive alcohol intake and/or liver dysfunction. There are accumulating evidences suggesting association of raised serum GGT level in stroke. So, this study was conducted to determine the association between the serum GGT level and stroke in population without history of alcohol consumption. Methods: This cross-sectional comparative study was carried out at Department of General medicine, Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Burla from November 2016 to October 2018. 100 cases and 100 controls were included in this study. Cases were the patients admitted to Department of General Medicine, VIMSAR, Burla, presenting within 24 hours of first episode of stroke. Controls were the age (+/-5 years) and sex matched healthy attendants of the patients. Alcoholics or patients suffering from hepatitis, cirrhosis of liver, cholestasis or patients taking drugs like Phenytoin, Valproic acid, Carbamazepine etc or patients with past episode of stroke were excluded from this study. Serum GGT level of both cases and controls were measured and compared. Results: In stroke patients, the mean serum GGT level was 54.95 IU/L with standard deviation of 20.54. In controls, the mean serum GGT level was 32.14 IU/L with standard deviation of 5.07. The p-value was less than 0.0001 i.e. highly significant. Conclusions: Serum GGT level is significantly increased in stroke patients than healthy persons without stroke

Pre-operative Hypoglycemia in Patients Presenting for Surgery: A Hospital Based Cross-sectional Study
Introduction: Peri-operative glycemic control is an important factor for post-operative recovery and is well protocoled for diabetic patients in every setup. It is not always so with non-diabetic patients. This study aimed to observe the pre-operative glucose level and prevalence of hypoglycemia in patients presenting for surgery and its association with the duration of nil per oral period (NPO), age and intravenous fluids used in the pre-operative period. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Anesthesiology in a Nepalese medical college including all the patients posted for elective surgery over a period of three months. Socio-demographic and clinical details of the participants were collected in the operating theatre. Duration of NPO period and intravenous fluid prescribed in the pre-operative fasting period were recorded. A glucose strip test was performed on all the participants. Results: Participants were found to have fasted for an unnecessarily longer duration (12.84┬▒2.27 hours). The incidence of hypoglycemia in patients posted for elective surgery was very high (43.3%). Ringer lactate and normal saline were equally prescribed (38.4%) and dextrose-normal saline was prescribed in the rest of the participants. Gender and type of intravenous fluids were positively correlated whereas NPO period was negatively correlated in overall participants though statistically insignificant. In hypoglycemic participants, we observed that lower glucose was influenced by pre-operative fluids, age and NPO duration. Conclusion: Pre-operative use of glucose-containing fluids during NPO period is an important step to prevent hypoglycemia and related consequences
Spectrum of uropathogens and their antibiotic sensitivity pattern in diabetes mellitus patients at a tertiary care hospital in Odisha, India
Background: Diabetes Mellitus is the most common endocrine disorder involving almost all systems of body. Untreated or poorly treated Diabetics are susceptible to develop a series of complications responsible for raised morbidity and mortality. Diabetes Mellitus has a number of long term effects on the Genitourinary system. Urinary tract infections have long been recognised as a significant problem in patients with Diabetes Mellitus. Methods: Prospective observational study. Diabetic patients with culture positive UTI were included. Gestational diabetes, Immunocompromised patients and patients with congenital renal anatomical abnormalities were excluded. Results: Authors included 211 numbers of culture positive UTI among diabetic patients. Out of which, 65 were male and 146 were female. Maximum number of patients belong to 56-65 years age group. Escherichia coli was the predominant organism isolated. Gram positive organisms showed 100% sensitivity to Vancomycin and Linezolid. Gram negative organisms showed 100% sensitivity to Polymyxin B.Conclusions: Genitourinary tract infection is not an infrequent complication seen in diabetes patients. Most common causative organism and their antibiotic sensitivity pattern should be done in tertiary care hospital for a better antibiotic policy
Demonstration of scientific farming of flathead grey mullet among tribal fishers of Balasore, Odisha
The flathead grey mullet Mugil cephalus has good market demand in Odisha yet the farming of this fish is
minimal. Scientific capture based farming both in cages and coastal saline ponds was initiated under a Tribal
Sub-Plan (TSP) programme operated in ICAR-CMFRI and small-scale fishers belonging to Bhumija tribe of
Jugadiha village in Balasore district of Odisha were trained for this. 3200 fingerlings of grey mullet of 20-45 g
body weight each and measuring 7-18 cm in total length were procured and stocked in ponds during October
2019. Acclimatized seeds were released in square GI cage (6 x 6 m) in November 2019. Feed prepared with
wheat flour and ground nut oilcake as well as floating pellet feed was given @ 5% of body weight. After
eight months culture period, a harvest of about 480 kg of grey mullet along with 20 kg of various local shrimp
species was obtained from the ponds which provide the tribal fish farmers an additional income of `153,000
which proved helpful during the economically tough times during COVID-19 pandemi
